I use this cable in my studio setup. It runs from my 15" Macbook Pro (unibody) to my 22" Samsung monitor. The connections are great. I plug/unplug it many times a day and I see no wear after having it for a couple months now. The plugs fit snugly and dont move even if I move the laptop around while its plugged in. It matches the other cables I have running in and out of the laptop perfectly.
This is a well constructed product, and it works as expected.
The issue is that the mini-displayport end is too big. On my unibody macbook pro, the monoprice cable takes up too much space, and renders the nearest USB port useless. Even Apple USB cables (e.g. an iPhone cable) do not fit next to the bulky monoproce mini-displayport cable.
This is almost a dealbreaker, and it is definitely annoying. In the end, the savings in buying the direct cable instead of an adapter and a cord separately will be outweighed by the need for a USB hub.
Very disappointed. It is safe to say that this item is targeted toward my model a exclusively. Why this wasn't tested is a mystery. This is a huge oversight, and I may even return the item.
PROS: Works as advertised if the monitor is capable of accepting the bulky DVI connection.
CONS: Bought this to use with a new model S2240M Dell monitor, however the connection on this monitor faces downward and is slightly recessed, due to the bulky size of the DVI connector it will not fit the connector as it remains at an angle when trying to connect it. Only way to get this cable to work on this monitor is to use an angle adapter at the monitor connection. which would be acceptable if you could find a 24+1 angle DVI adapter.
Wound up using a DVI extension cable with the normal size DVI connection, which hooked up with no problem. Monoprice, any suggestion you have would be appreciated, you may also want to look at the design of this particular bulky DVI connector.
Works great and I love having the one cable straight to the extra monitor instead of a short adapter hanging out with another cable attached to that. The mini display port side get warm to the touch when in use. The ports on my MacBook Pro are really close together so when I have the extra display hooked up and want to use the two USB ports at the same time it gets crammed. I can still plug things in but the USB next to it stays slightly tilted. It needs to be a slim profile for whatever USB cable/device you plug in next to it on the 13 MBP.
PROS: Great price, Monoprice logo, Better than little short adaptors, great quality.
Overall this is a worthwhile purchase, especially for the price. It is exactly as described...a single-cable solution for connecting your MacBook to an external display without a separate adapter/dongle. To be clear, this connects a mini-DisplayPort connection on your MacBook/MacBook Pro to the DVI input on your monitor. Does NOT work on VGA-only monitors.
I have been using for over a month nearly full-time with zero issues. I would gladly buy another.
PROS: Single cable does not require a separate mini-DisplayPort adapter. Simplifies setup.
CONS: DVI connector is a little bulky and a harder, potentially brittle plastic.
PROS: The extra length available for these cables allows us to connect our computers to external monitors without the need for an additional cable attached to the short adapter available from Apple, eliminating one more possible failure link.
Most reviews have already covered the size of the mini-displayport plug, but I noticed that the dvi plug is a little bulky as well: the dvi spec lists a max plug width of 39.50mm, but a rough measure shows this guy is more like 41.275mm.
My viewsonic vg2230wm display accepts both vga and dvi input, with automatic detection/selection, but because of the size of this dvi plug I'm unable to fit a vga plug adjacent to it.
That said, the adapter functions correctly. I may get out a file..
I have a late 2010 model 27" iMac and needed this cable to hook up a Dell 24" LCD. First let me say that monoprice customer service is great. I received a bad cable and they replaced it fast. Unfortunately, the replacement went bad after a few weeks. The monitor flickers and sometimes goes out completely. I have double and tripled checked the physical connection and it's solid. I know it's not my hardware I borrowed an Apple brand adapter and DVI cable from work to test and have no issues. IT/helpdesk is asking for it back, I guess I'll try my luck with another one.
PROS: monoprice customer service
CONS: didn't work, RMA'ed, second one worked for a while but now has issues
While this cable works, I have a few major qualms about it. My first reaction was that the connector itself is MASSIVE - over and inch long and very wide. I will admit I'm not sure why it has to be so large considering the MDP extension cable I ordered is so slim. This cramped my plans, as I had anticipated being able to bend the cable back with a similar radius to the extension cable to hide it in a loom.
The BIGGER problem came when I gave up and decided to use it anyways. I have a 13" unibody Macbook Pro and I use FireWire external HDDs - a word of warning: you cannot plug a firewire cable in at the same time as the Monoprice Mini DisplayPort to DVI (same goes for the MDP to HDMI cable I ordered).
I've finally given up and just tossed this relatively pricey (by MonoPrice's standards) cable in the drawer.
Having said all that, yes, it does WORK fine when tested.
Cable works, but don't buy it until they fix the design
The good: It works The Bad: Everything else
Overall if you really need mini-displayport - Digital DVI this cable works just fine. The problem is, the mini-displayport plug is a huge long connector. No idea why monoprice did this but it is completely unwieldy and sticks out from my macbook pro like 4 inches or so. At the end of the day I will just use an official apple mini-displayport - DVI dongle. Bleh.
