Blackbird 4K HDMI Scaler with S/PDIF Audio Extractor

The Blackbird™ 4K HDMI® Scaler and Audio Extractor is the perfect component for any home entertainment system. With this extractor, you can play content from a 1080p or MHL mobile device onto a UHD 4K display and audio system, using an external amplifier or AV receiver.

The Blackbird accepts from a 1080p HDMI source or from an MHL®-enabled mobile device via the Micro USB port. In addition to the ultra high resolution (UHD) video output, the audio signal is duplicated on the digital optical S/PDIF (Toslink®) audio output, for separate processing on an external amplifier or AV receiver.

Three DIP switches control EDID and scaling behavior, including a pass-through option, as well as three fixed audio and scaling options.

    Features:

    • Supports UHD 4K resolution (3840 x 2160p)
    • Scales 1080p to 4K UHD resolution
    • S/PDIF digital optical (Toslink) audio output
    • HDMI input compliant with MHL™ 2.0

Will this pass digital audio to the HDMI output while also sending it to SPDIF at the same time?
    A shopper on Jul 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Yes, this unit will simultaneously output the audio from the HDMI and the SPDIF optical output.
What do the individual EDID switches do in terms of upscaling?
    A shopper on Jan 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Receivers can be FLAKY in the middle of an HDMI chain to a TV with any kind of converter/scaling/switch boxes BEFORE or AFTER the Receiver!

ALWAYS try it from the SOURCE to the box to the TV and see if it works. If it works the box is fine.

    Then insert the Receiver.

If it does not work there is an incompatibility issue with the receiver & Box.
You MAY contact the manufacturer (of both units) for an update that may fix the problem, but don't hold your breath.
Will it put out 7.1 surround? I have a PS4 slim and it doesn't have ave an optical port and I wanna know if it will work and convert the optical to hdmi so I can use it
    A shopper on Jun 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This passes Dolby digital from HDMI to an optical output. I use it to pass the sound to an amp so I can listen to Dolby while viewing HDMI on my monitor. It cannot add Dolby to the hdmi.
I have a TV with HDMI & ARC HDMI connections, my surround sound amplifier has a TOSLINK optical connection - will this device allow me to connect them together so I can have surround sound from my tv?
    A shopper on Feb 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: yes, if it works. I have had trouble with all of the blackbird product line through monoprice. it will work if the device is functioning properly

    Awesome product
My receiver has HDMI inputs but doesn't do 4K. So I got the Blackbird 4K HDMI Switch (http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=13703&seq=1&format=2) and this. My receiver is now just a sound processor via its optical input and all my HDMI devices are connected to the Blackbird. Really awesome considering my other alternative is to ditch my present still great receiver and buy a new 4K switching receiver for +$300. I've nothing but praises for Monoprice. They have every gadget and thingy you can possibly need for your home theater all priced as low as can be (with options to go even lower with bulk purchases) and support (I've called on them once before for hooking up my Mac Mini to my 5.1 receiver) is really helpful. I wish all vendors on the planet were like Monoprice the customer's happiness is theirs.

    Good but with a con
I bought this to get dolby digital sound from my PS4 to my receiver and it works great in doing that but I find that every other day I have to keep resetting the unit by unplugging the power cord, waiting for a few minutes and plugging it back in.

Works well for my Roku, stereo and projector set up.
Used to splice video to a non-audio-out projector across 50ft of hdmi cable and to 5.1 surround via TOSlink. Works well after two weeks; essential to my setup!

    Works great
I bought this to pass audio from my Dish Hopper 3 to my Sonos Playbar. It works beautifully. Plug it all in and let it go - I've had no problems.

PROS: Easy setup - small footprint

    CONS: None

The 2nd one is working fine
The first unit I received didn't work at all. I returned it and the 2nd unit is working fine. I wish my A/V receiver had HDMI inputs but since it doesn't this unit has solved the problem and gives me 5.1 capability.

    PROS: Does what I wanted

CONS: First unit failed for me. It appears others have had the same problem.

    Could not get to work
Purchased this to pull the digital audio from the HDMI between my laptop and a 1080p projector. Plugging the projector directly into the laptop works fine. When trying to use the Blackbird the laptop could sense that a second monitor was attached, but the projector could not detect a source. I plan to return it back to Monoprice.

    CONS: Didn't work
    April 9, 2016
    Did not work
I bought this as a go-between between my Mac Mini (HDMI output) and TV. I wanted to split off the audio signal to go to a soundbar that could be on at all times (without the TV needing to be on). This unit was supposed to do the job, but didn't work. When I plugged it in, it would give me 1 second worth of audio then die. I tried all the settings, tried resetting it, but nothing would make it work. When I contacted Monoprice tech support, they didn't know, and their only response was "Apple devices can be flaky," which I don't buy 100%, but whatever. I had to return it, unfortunately. It's possible I just got a bad unit, but it's more likely it's just not designed correctly. Buyer beware.
