Does this work both ways? I have Toslink audio from my Mac plus a HDMI output graphics card. Wish to combine to something like this to use 1 HDMI cable to my tv for internet streaming.

BEST ANSWER: No. You would need an audio inserter like Monoprice Product # 13347. I use it to do exactly what you wish to do. Works great.
Does the HDMI output also output the original audio? Or is it stripped from the signal?
    Matthew S on Dec 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It's passed through. Extracts it but does not alter or remove the audio signal.
Does this pass through CEC signal from the HDMI in to the out?

    Perfect for streaming music
This box is perfect for streaming audio while using the HDMI output of your laptop. No handshake downstream needed . Just output optical from this box to your DAC or receiver for high resolution audio. Works so much better than USB.

PROS: Small, inexpensive for what it does, works exceptionally well.

CONS: Blue lights are pretty bright.

Using in Zone 2 with an AV Receiver
My Denon AVR-X4200W receiver will allow Zone 2 to broadcast audio and video on HDMI (digital). However I use the outdoor TV as a monitor and have Def Tech speakers and sub-woofer connected to a separate Onkyo stereo as instructed by Denon's User Manual.

In Zone 2 I use this device to extract the digital audio signal and send to the Onkyo stereo. The balance of the digital signal in Zone 2 is then sent to a Peerless HDS300 Flow3 HDMI wireless transmitter (unfortunately I do not have a hardwire to the TV in Zone 2).

So far as the Blackbird Extractor is concerned, it appears to be working okay. I have it set on full digital signal (up to 5.1) and use an optical digital cord. I did have a problem getting sound when on our Apple TV (2016 version) I switched from music to movies. Once I switched the Apple TV to stereo output from 5.1, all was okay. I need to look into this matter as this may not be the Blackbird Extractor. However I never had that problem with an older extractor so can't yet give it 5 stars.

    PROS: Good construction
    Optical digital output

CONS: Instructions could go into more detail regarding the 3 settings.

    Seems to work fine
Has done the job I bought it for, taking audio from a Roku and routing it through an AV stereo so that I could turn off the TV for nighttime listening to audio books on Plex or radio on ShoutCast. The LED lights are WAY too bright, I had to cover them with two pieces of electrical tape. But it works.

Great tech support, but not the product for me
I'm giving this unit five stars, not because it performed at that level for me but because Monoprice gave me five-star tech support that eventually determined this product couldn't work with my equipment. Monoprice cheerfully processed a return of the item and is still the first place I turn for hardware solutions.

I wanted to feed an old 2-channel audio amp (RCA connections) with sound from an over-the-air TV. The 2010 TV's only available audio output is its Audio Return Channel on its HDMI-1-ARC input, so I fed that to the PID 13349. Nothing made it work - cables, settings, power cycling, firmware. PID 13349's description doesn't mention or exclude ARC as an input. Maybe it was a handshake issue, maybe the TV needed some other HDMI input (rather than its tuner) to produce ARC output, or some other mystery?

FYI I had tried PID 6884, but the TV's optical output is 5.1 channel only, and the 6884 requires a 2-channel optical signal as input.

    PROS: It's a great idea

CONS: Unclear if this can use ARC as in input and if it can down-channel to a 2-channel output

    So far so good.
I'm using several of these in a distributed video system. They've only been installed for a week but, they work great! Ordering another today to add to that system. This will be my "goto" de-embedder from now on. My only wish is that they came with mounting tabs.

PROS: Works right out of the box. Small form factor.

    Does what I wanted
I bought this product to extract high resolution audio from HDMI and send the audio through the optical output to an external digital to analog converter. Now I am getting DVD Audio in its native 96/24 resolution and audio from SACD disks in 88/24. The Blu-Ray player converts the SACD audio to high resolution PCM. Now I can have all my digital audio go through my external DAC as I want to do.
