Does the HDMI out transmit audio or is it muted? I’m looking for a solution where an HDMI input transmits it’s full signal (audio & video) to the HDMI output and also transmit audio to the other audio outputs. Can this device do this? If not, is there another device you can recommend?

Does this device handle 4k60 hdr signals?
    A shopper on Dec 8, 2016

Does this unit extract Dolby Digital Plus (+) from HDMI and convert to 5.1 for analog output? Thanks!

Will this device take a Dolby Pro Logic II encoded signal (surround channels encoded onto the left & right channels) and output the analog center, LFE, left and right surround channels?
    Paul D on Sep 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: So you have a two channel AC3 signal. There is no specific information about decoding Dolby formats. You probably have to contact the manufacturer directly. Actually this has a Monoprice label so it is probably manufactured for Monoprice in China. Try email to tech at monoprice.com Icouldnt embed the properly formatted email. Monoprice does not allow.
Does this work with a powered HDMI Matrix (4x2) either upstream or downstream?

Can this pass Dolby Atmos via ARC?
    A shopper on Jul 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Generally speaking, ARC will not pass Dolby Atmos.
Can I use this to convert the LPCM 5.1 surround From my Nintendo Switch so it will work with my Sonos surround system (Dolby 5.1)?
    A shopper on Jul 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Not really. You can connect the optical out to your Sonos system to at least get stereo sound. The Sonos system will receive a stereo only signal and might upconvert the stereo signal to 5.1., depending on your settings on the Sonos. This is not ideal but might be good enough to give a decent surround sound experience but most likely would sound totally wrong. What you really need is something that can encode LPCM 5.1 to Dolby Digital, but I haven't had any luck finding something like that.
Couple of things...Does it have ARC? How can it only be HDCP 1.2 if 4k has to be shot thru HDMI 2.0?
    A shopper on Jul 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does not have ARC built into it as it only acts as an intermediary between devices. It will simply take what it is given and move it along accordingly. ARC is a functionality that will be present only on an output device (TV, projector, etc) in order to run audio back to a receiver or other device.

On another note, HDCP and HDMI may correlate but are not synonymous. You do not need HDCP 2.2 to achieve HDMI 2.0 capabilities. So long as your source device does not require HDCP 2.2 then you will be able to achieve your 4k signal.
I have a PS4 slim and it doesn't have optical. i wanna be able to use my headset that uses optical. Will this concert that to hdmi so I can use it and will it still be able to be at 7.1 surround?
    New User U on Jun 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This device will work as an optical connection point for your PS4 slim. As far as the audio quality goes I think my old PS3 was much much better. If I had a chance to buy a PS4 again it would not be the "slim"
What cable or adapter is needed to send 7.1 analog to the AVR?
    Brett F on Dec 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello, We recommend using a 3.5mm to RCA cable for each of the dual channel outputs on the extractor. We would recommend cables like PID 5598 or PID 9768. Thank you for your question.

Works flawlessly with WiiU LPCM-6 to Analog 5.1
This is only product of 3 I've tested from various vendors that successfully converts the WiiU's uncompressed 6-channel HDMI audio to 5.1 analog for my Logitech Z906 computer speakers. It properly represents itself to the WiiU as an independent device - all other products I tested passed the display's EDID down to the WiiU and resulted in no surround sound.

    PROS: - High-quality, solid build
    - Fast - no lag and turns on/off/resets the HDMI signal quickly
    - Properly reports independent, fully-qualified EDID to source device

CONS: - The Center/Sub 3.5mm channel doesn't quite work: I have to keep the wire from plugging in completely in order to get both independent channels. I've tried this with multiple wires and all have the same result. It could be a pole-config issue with my unit... not sure.
    - Blindingly bright blue LEDs. Tape to the rescue!

    Great Home A/V Solution
Have a long family room with large TV over fireplace that is open to large kitchen with in-ceiling speakers. Was looking for a solution to have HDMI audio and video to TV in family room *and* extend audio to kitchen speakers. Item 13348 (in conjunction with Item 665) fit the bill. HDMI source goes into Blackbird 4K 7.1 Audio Extractor HDMI out (audio and video) goes to family room TV, RF/LF stereo goes to AV receiver where I use Zone 2 to drive kitchen speakers. I was afraid that the audio extractor would remove audio from the HDMI out to the family room TV, but it doesn't. (EDID needs to be set to PLCM 7.1 for this configuration to workdoesn't work with other EDID settings.)

PROS: Great pricemuch better than additional/dedicated AV receiver or more expensive solutions. Small footprint. Device can extract any/all of the following audio pairs (needs Item 665 for each pair): Left/Right Front, Left/Right Surround, Center/Sub. Current Blu-ray supported (HDCP 1.2?).

CONS: Have to purchase Item 665(s) separatelybut glad they are not built into audio extractor (for flexibility). Takes another AC/DC wall adapter/outlet. Item 665 is not tight in 3.5mm female port. Stereo extraction to kitchen louder than HDMI audio to family room TV, but I can control with AV Zone 2 volume and kitchen speaker wall volume.

Kinda works, Centre & LFE channels are reversed
This box kinda works if you persist with it. We purchased a number of them and found the centre/Lfe channels are reversed. This can be solved with 2 cables to swap the channels, but you shouldn't need to do that, it should just work correctly out of the box.

If using with a PC, your PC will sometimes detect the EDID from this device, sometimes not, sometimes detect multiples.

Every PC reboot requires a full setup again.

If you have some knowledge in this area and are willing to persist with it, it will work in the end, but not easily and straight forward out of the box.

Works as advertised, except not really 4k
I just needed something to get surround sound (LPCM) from my Nintendo Switch into the 7.1 input on my older receiver. Even though this means using more cables, contributing to the wire mess behind my TV, everything is working as I expect.

Cons: Even when there is no signal to this device, the TV thinks there is and the TV will not automatically power off. For me, this isn't a problem, but if anyone else in my house forgets to turn off the TV, the tv is on all night.
Other Thoughts: It is common practice for manufacturers to say something is 4k, when in reality this won't play 4K at 60fps or have the most modern copyright protection (HDCP 2.0). This product is no exception and will only do 4K at 30fps. Because this product has only HDCP 1.4 and not 2.0, a vast majority of people with a 4k tv will have their signal from a 4k BluRay player, etc, downconverted to High Definition because it lacks HDCP 2.0. If you have a high def tv like me, this is not an issue.

I originally was looking for an HDMI audio extractor that would work with HDMI ARC and could be powered by USB or an audio extractor that had multiple HDMI ports that would automatically be changed based on the input. I could not find anything that did that, so this was my next best option.

    Just the Ticket
I had some difficulty until I realized that the HDMI output of my receiver had the audio disabled. After fixing that this device performed wonderfully. The sound through my wireless headphones is beyond my expectations and the ability to have simulated surround sound is a bonus.

    Awesome device, one small quibble
Used this device to plug my Nyko Nintendo Switch dock into my Logitech Z906 speaker system.

I don't know if it's the system or the adapter but Center/Sub were swapped, so I'd get the bass in my center channel and the center channel audio in my subwoofer.

I had a pair of 3.5mm-to-RCA adapters lying around, so I used them to swap the channels. Worked like a charm. Just something to keep in mind.
