Questions and Answers
FYI... I could never get this unit to pass a 3D signal. I had to buy a 1x2 3D HDMI splitter to get 3D. I used Port 1 of the 1x2 splitter to send 3D signal to the TV and Port 2 to send signal to the 1x8 HDMI splitter to support the rest of the Non-3D TV's in the house.
Despite the 3D issue, the unit worked fine until just outside of the warranty when it stopped distributing signals to all ports. I contacted Monoprice about the issue and went through a long a difficult process of getting them to agree to an warranty exchange. Just before I was to send the unit back, it started working.
Happy to have TV again I opted to keep the current unit and watch TV versus sending it back and be without TV for another week. In hindsight I should have taken the exchange.
The unit continued to work until 5/2015 when all ports lost signal. The port lights are all out and the power light just pulses. I unplugged the unit and let it sit overnight only to find the same behavior after plugging it in the next morning.
I believe it is gone for good now. The unit lasted almost 3 years, which is not great but not completely unacceptable. I returned to Monoprice to look for a replacement only to find out that the unit is not only more expensive than when I originally purchased it, but it is also about $20 more than comparable units from other manufacturers.
Based on this I will end up purchasing a replacement elsewhere.
Don't let this review deter you from Monprice products, I still highly endorse their cables and mounts.
PROS: When working, distributes HDMI Video/Audio with no flickers or delays
CONS: Price has increased since original purchase in 2012.
Is not following the lower price trend of other manufacturers offering 1x8 3D HDMI Splitters.
Does not work with DirecTV 3D
PROS: This HDMI Splitter is doing everything I envisioned. I just build a new house, and I ran HDMI cable through the entire house. And this switch tied it all together. I am outputing from the DVR to the Switch, and the outputting to the family room, kitchen, master bath, guest bath, Game Room, Exercise Room, & Master Bedroom. I now can start in the family room, and have what I am playing their display over the entire house. If I need to take a bathroom break, No problem!, HD on the throne.
CONS: The only problem that I had was in getting the sound to play on all of the TV's. I was getting Picture and sound on 5 TV's, but only Picture on the 3 identical 24" LG TV's that I had. I contacted MONOPRICE Tech support, and they gave me a super easy fix. I just had to unplug and power down everything, and power/connect everything in reverse order.
1. Power off and disconnect the power and HDMI of the TV/Display
2. Power off and disconnect the power and HDMI of the Splitter
3. Power off and disconnect the power and HDMI of the Source(cable box, bluray players, av receivers, etc)
4. Wait roughly 3-5 minutes
5. The reconnect and power on the devices listed in steps 1-3
6. Reconnect HDMI and power of the TV/Display
7. Reconnect HDMI and power of the Splitter
8. Reconnect HDMI and power of the source(cable box, bluray players, a/v receivers, etc)
This took about 5minutes, and Hooray! HD Picture and Sound Everywhere!
I installed a HDMI Distribution home network using all Monoprice products. I used MonoPrice Cat6, MonoPrice HDMI over Cat6 Face Plates, and MonoPrice 1x8 HDMI Splitter.
The wire was cheap but carried a great signal through out the whole house. The Face Plates look clean and the HDMI Splitter was pretty straight forward.
Half of the FacePlates stopped working or would cut out sound or blink picture (keep in mind i test all Cat6 connections and they were 100% clean). I reached out to MonoPrice about the face plates and they blamed it on my Roku. I assured them my Roku has nothing to do with it because it worked great on other TV's in the home. Nevertheless they wouldn't help or replace.
The HDMI Splitter stopped working about 400 days later out of no where. Up to that point it seamed fine, except it would transmit 5.1 Audio the same way through each channel. This is really weird because the HDMI digital signal should be strictly data (1's and 0's) but somehow it lost Dolby Audio signal among it. Nevertheless, the power indicator light started blinking and "Nick C" from customer support said he couldn't help except to offer a $5 discount for me to buy the same crappy replacement.
This is very disappointing and i think I will now shop FireFold.com for my AV needs.
PROS: Worked great....for about a year
CONS: Stopped working after 1 year and Monoprice refuses to stand behind their branded products.
PROS: Works great, I connected a plasma HDTV, one LEDTV, four LCD TV and one Yamaha Network Receiver and everything works great. Good picture quality
PROS: 8 way hd splitter
great signal even over long distance
CONS: none so far.
PROS: Nice LED's show connection status
PROS: Love this splitter. Have a customer where we feed a 5x1 HDMI switch into this unit so it feeds TVs all over their complex, as well as their main audio receiver.
CONS: This is the third splitter I have installed in their home as the first two died for no apparent reason. This time I have added an active repeater for one feed the furthest away to see if that solves the issue.
