threw VGA cable going to a projector that accepted component on its VGA
The computers work fine, the component does not, the same component VGA
cable works when bypassing the switch just fine, when using all the same
cables and a gender changer in place of the switch box so the switch must
change the signal or filter it in some way,
Great price (even with shipping). Quick shipping too.
I dont think this was necessarily a fault of the device, though. I found that if I started by connecting the PC directly to the display when it booted, and then swapping the cables to the switch it would work correctly. There is evidently some communication between the PC and the display that is being blocked or obscured (EDID Maybe?) by the switch that results in the PC using slightly wrong video settings. I imagine if used on a less flaky device (that HDTV was a piece of junk) it probably wouldnt be an issue, or if I had spent some time fiddling with the more obscure video timing settings on my PC then I might have solved this.
As it is, I ended up exchanging the TV and no longer needed to try.
So, in summary, this thing seems to work great, but evidently you cant rely on EDID settings if you need them.
