Can I use this to convert my Cable TV signal emerging from the wall outlet to HDMI needed for my TV?
A shopper
on Dec 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Probably not. This device will only convert a composite video (usually a yellow RCA phono connector) or component video (3 colors, RCA phono connectors) to HDMI. Your cable TV signal might have to be processed thru the box supplied by your cable company first. Many cable signals are now scrambled and unless you have a really old cable network, it is not a composite video signal anyway. If in doubt, check with your cable TV company. Note that this is not a scaler, and will not modify the resolution of the source signal.

No, this adapter will not accept the coax cable from a cable service. If you have a cable box that does not have HDMI out but does have analog component connections, then it would be useful. I am not aware of any cable boxes that are set up this way, however since analog component connections are increasingly rare (being used in high end video components about 15 years ago. This converter is primarily useful to support these legacy components.

No, it does not have a video input for a coaxial cable (for cable tv, satellite, tv antenna). The coaxial input on this is audio only and is an entirely different connection.

Will product # 5971 allow HDMI output from an AVR to input coaxial or optical to another AVR? Is to HDMI output and coaxial/optical output 2ch or 5.1ch or both?
A shopper
on Jan 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: possible, but not likely, the coaxial/optical signal is inserted between video frames, either 2 ch or up to Dolby Digital + depending on the original source. If the now embedded audio is sent via the HDMI interface to another AVR, that AVR could recover the audio. However, the fly in the soup is that there MUST be a video signal present on the HDMI input for this to work at all. Hope this helps...

The item #5971 converts and combines the component video signal and the optical audio signal into a one sigle hdmi signal. It will also combine and convert AVR signals into a one single hdmi signal. Optical output with a 5.1 channels will be converted to a 5.1channel signal into hdmi.

will this device output sound from a hdmi output port on my tv to a digital optical input on my soundbar?
A shopper
on Sep 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No it will not. Your tv hopefully has a optical ideally or a 3.5mm jack. If you have a 3.5mm jack use an adapter of 3.5mm to optical output. Your sound bar might also have this 3.5mm input if so just buy a sheilded cable. Best sound will come from optical but the 3.5mm will do for stereo output.

I don't think so. It will only convert component video + audio (input) into HDMI (output). Unless your soundbar has an HDMI input, this won't work, and if it does have an HDMI input, you don't need this converter.

What is the added latency of using this device?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: If the device creates latency, it should only be a problem with gaming systems for video. The other issue I could foresee would be auio delay as the device will not support auto lip sync over HDMI because of the Analog to Digital conversion.

My monoprice component to vga finally gave way this week. I was looking at this and I am wondering if anyone who owns this have ever tested this with a Playstation 2 and hooked up to a monitor that has HDMI support? I know it says it has no scaling function so I assume it is a straight 480p. However, I am not sure if my monitor will do some magical auto-adjust like it does in the VGA side (I experienced an issue with a component to vga that had no scaler) and it caused painful issues for it. So if someone who owns this or perhaps a monoprice tech staff can answer this question it would be appreciated.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. Sorry to hear about the Component to VGA going out on you. Should it be within warranty, feel free to reach out to us regarding replacement options.
As for the Component to HDMI converter, it should work no problem using the HDMI port on your monitor. HDMI will use EDID information to provide the supported resolutions. It would choose the highest resolution that the PS2 would output via Component.
Feel free to contact our tech support team should you have any further questions any of the methods available here:

According to the Amazon link, it says this only works if the Toslink audio is set to PCM and not Bitstream. I see no comment of this anywhere in the description. Can this be confirmed?
I'm looking to use something like this for my original generation XBox that has the HD AV Pack which outputs Component and Toslink. I do not get to control how the Toslink audio is formatted but I suspect it would be via bitstream since it is Dolby 5.1.
Is there any product that simply works with these older consoles (Xbox, PS2, early XBox 360, etc) prior to all the consoles have HDMI ports?

BEST ANSWER: I bought mine for the same purpose as you. I remember it didn't work correctly with my Xbox, but seemed to work with my PS2. I was also using a component/Toslink switch box, but I can't remember if I tried to troubleshoot and bypass the switch box or not. I found a couple larger, multi-input converters that looked ok, but the cost was prohibitive and that's how I ended up with this one. You'd probably be better off looking for a used tv with component inputs.

Is there any reason the HDC-CAH cannot handle ordinary PCM stereo digital audio? I am using the HDC-CAH to generate an HDMI signal which feeds into an Epiphan web streaming appliance. The audio feeding into the HDC-CAH is PCM stereo, not Dolby Digital. The video converts perfectly. But the Epiphan reports a strange audio problem, indicating the HDMI has a nonstandard audio sample rate of over 80 kHz. The system's audio output has strange audible effects as well. Changing the source audio's sample rate between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz does not help.
