I wouldn't personally, these speakers are fairly heavy and the mounting hardware (4 small plastic legs), while sufficient for a wall, seems like it wouldn't be enough to hold these against gravity in a ceiling.

Hi all - I am looking at purchasing these and am not sure if I will be able to fit them in my wall. One of the walls that I want to install them in is studded with 2x4s (which are of course only 3.5" deep) and the mounting depth of these is listed at 3.5". I know that sometimes the internal clearance required is greater than the mounting depth, and if that is the case here then I will run out of room. Does anyone have any experience mounting these (Product # 7604 - Caliber In-Wall Speakers 6.5-Inch) in a standard 2x4 wall?

BEST ANSWER: The cutout dimensions for this speaker would be 12.99" x 7.09" and would have a depth of 3.5".
So there is a good chance this will work in the area you had described.
I would measure the space between your studs if you wanted to be sure.

Your 2x4 is 3.5" deep but don't forget that you also have the 1/2" dry wall so you have a total of 4" and should be fine.

Has anyone used this as a horizontal center? I don't like the lobing problems associated with standard horizontal mid-tweeter-mid designs and thought this might perform a bit better due to concentric tweeter/mid alignment.

No way man, I'm not going to go first. I chose the 8 inch two way model & added Sonic Barrier 1/2" acoustic sound damping foam behind the drivers to absorb some of the back wave. Later during painting I stuffed the wall cavity with some insulation. Both offered noticeable improvements. Even my wife is happy with the stealthy painted installation and the sound quality. Hopefully some other brave soul will give it a go and report back with how it works as a horizontal center :)

While I have not used it as a center channel with a horizontal positioning I can't see why it wouldn't work just fine and be superior off axis when compared to a speaker with a MTM driver alignment.

I have a 7.1 surround amp but only have adequate space for a 5.1 set-up. My amp is capable of bi-amp. I’m looking at trying to free up floor space by moving to in wall speakers. Can I bi-amp or modify for bi-amp? Any suggestions or recommendations for doing this?

It would be possible to do that and bypass the crossover network with some custom wiring/modifications, yes. Figuring out where you'd cross over would probably just be a trial and error process. These speakers sound really good so you might want to try them in full range first.

I keep speakers as far as possible just in case of any interference issues also if I ever upgrade to a bigger TV I won't have to move my speakers again..

BEST ANSWER: We do not recommend that. You will encounter phase problems caused by sound arriving to your ears at different times. It might be better if you align the speakers on top of each other with the tweeter as close as possible, one upside down.

Thanks for the respond. The serial connection I refer to is the wire connection. I indeed intend to install is on top of each other as you suggested. I like to Amber 3-way. How does the Caliber 3-way with concentric compare to that in this type of installation. (two each on all front channels). Thanks.

If you hook them up in serial pairs, you end up with 16 ohm impedance. If you connect them in parallels, them 4 ohm.s per pair As I recall these are individually 8 ohm speakers. if your receiver can handle 4 ohms, that is the way to go. The phase is a non issue, they will be close enough for it to not matter.

speaker backs / Speaker boxes for the 7604's these are going in the ceiling and I wanted to know some specs: I need two numbers from the specifications of the woofer. The Q (or, Qts) and the V(as) ratings. The V(as) is usually measured in Cubic feet. So I can build some boxes to "hopefully get a flat response speaker" . Since this is a 3 way speaker perhaps someone can give me the total volume for these?

I have these installed and the cover is white, is there a way to buy black ones and replace? I am wanting to paint that wall black
A shopper
on Oct 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You will need to paint your speakers black. You can remove the grills to paint them. Use a thin paint like Krylon and use light coats so that paint does not build up in the holes.
The frame can also be painted once you remove the speaker from the wall or mask around it. Use a plastic approved paint. Most spray paints now are OK for plastic, and will say so on the can. 2 or three light coats will be best. You must mask the speakers - the original packing came with a cutout that would fit inside for painting, or you can do the same with cardboard or craft paper. Carefully tape it with blue tape, and do not touch tape to the speakers at any place.

Good speakers at a good price
Quality speakers at a good price. I purchased 2 pair for use in a 7.2 media center setup. So far (been about 3 weeks, speakers look and sound great. Very unobtrusive, blend right into the walls, but with great sound quality.

Great speakers and great price
Great speakers, my only issue is that the brackets that turn and hold it in the wall are way too fragile and will break very easily. Yes two of mine broke.

Really Nice Sound
I bought a pair of these to upgrade the LR pair in my home theater room. For the last four years I've been using the Monoprice 6035's as the LR as well as the four other surrounds. I wanted to use something with very similar cosmetics to the 6035 and the 6317.
Installation was simply a matter of cutting the existing 6035 holes larger. What's interesting about the dimensions is that while they are obviously longer by a couple of inches they are also wider by about 1/4 of an inch when compared to the 6035 which seems odd. I have them installed in an interior 2/4 wall with some fiberglass insulation batting placed inside of the wall cavity for a few feet. I also have the speaker mounted upside down with the tweeter at the bottom just because of the layout of the wall/room the left and right front speakers have to be mounted a little higher than the surrounds. This makes the tweeters all approximately the same height.
I'm really pleased with the sound quality which seems to be quite similar to the 6035 but there's just more sound with less strain even at pretty high volumes. My receiver is a Yamaha RX-A3050 in a 7.1.4 configuration with an Audiosource amp for the additional 2 channels, Monoprice 12 inch powered sub and the in ceiling speakers are the Monoprice 6034's.
These speakers are nice sounding and a great value. You won't be disappointed and they should work great as a left, right, center or surround in most home theater settings.

Monoprice for the Win!
I've installed 5 of these in my buddies lake house with open ceilings and no sub-woofer and I'm AMAZED at how well they sound. Since then, I've installed them in another friends Home Theater and did the front 3 and balance is just awesome. I read some of the reviews on here and can't believe some of the issues people are having. I can't wait to get these installed in my HT set-up. For the price, quality and sound, these can't be beat!!!
PROS: The micro grill is great!

Very good sound quality... out of the left one only
First off. I've had these speakers for almost a year and in that time my wife and I have been raising our first child. This is relevant because we never really used the speakers while she was an infant, much less raised the volume on the receiver beyond anything more than a comfortable listening level. Having said that, our child is 1 now and the three of us are jamming out to some serious sing-alongs (Raffi, ugh) and we're hearing all sorts of distortion from the right channel. This is something that I heard earlier on, but was foolish and didn't contact customer support about the issue. After a close inspection, I can see imperfections in the way the right speaker's cones are glued in, and I wonder if it's just a manufacturer's defect. Installation was a breeze, albeit messy. Removal is bit tricky though. So... I'll give this a 6 instead of a 9 that it deserves because QC dropped the ball on my pair. Despite the suspected defect of my right channel, I'd probably roll the dice and purchase these again if I moved or needed some affordable speakers for another home theater.
PROS: The price. The sound
CONS: Quality control. Those fragile tabs on the backside

Great speakers!
Installation was easy, speakers worked like charm right the first time, deliver a lot of air movement producing clear sound. Highly recommended.
PROS: Excellent sound, quality product, easy installation, beautiful micro-flange.
CONS: Regretfully they do not sell these separate, I would have purchased one extra and use it as center.

Great speakers!
Love them. They sound great. I'm really happy I read reviews and looked at the specs before buying. These were exactly what I wanted. I bought 2 pair to use in a custom built in entertainment center.
PROS: Perfect. They sound and look great!
CONS: I wish they sold these as a single speaker instead of in pairs. Now I'm stuck when an extra speaker and trying to sell it on eBay or Craigslist.
