My audient evo 8 has 48v phantom power. Should I use this or is it built to the power supply?
Christine Gallant G
on Jan 7, 2022
BEST ANSWER: The power supply handles all of the functions of the microphone. This includes the high-voltage power required to run the tube and the switching for the polar patterns. Phantom power from your interface is not required. I hope this helps.

You want to use the power supply that comes with the microphone rather then the phantom power from your interface. In fact you should make sure the phantom is off on that channel before plugging in the microphone.

Power supply supplies power to the microphone via the provided 7 pin cable. The power supply needs to be plugged into a wall outlet. No need to flip on your phantom power.

What cable is best for this mic?
A shopper
on Sep 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: This is a tube mic so it has its own dedicated power supply. The cable that actually connects to the microphone is a specialized 7 pin XLR that runs from the power supply to the mic. This cable is included and ships with the LTM500.
You also need a standard XLR mic cable to run from the power supply to the input of the console or interface depending on your set-up. Any brand of cable will do but, don't scrimp too much. A good quality cable will last much longer and provide much better performance.

The mic comes with a 7pin XLR cable to connect the mic to it's power supply. A standard XLR cable is needed to connect from the power supply's output to a microphone input on your preamp, mixer, or interface.

I bought the LTM500, and I want to change out the tube to a higher quality Russian tube. I can't seem to find how to access it in the mic. How do I pull the PCB from the housing to change it?
A shopper
on Feb 14, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Unscrew the bottom ring. It threads off around the XLR. Just twist the bottom inch or so of the black housing. After you take that off... the main cylinder housing just slides off. Then you see the tube. No need to remove PCB from the housing, you just remove the housing to access the tube. It will make sense once you screw off the bottom.

Hold the body of the mic in one hand, then at the seam at the bottom of the mic, just below the SR emblem, unscrew that ring from the threaded 7-pin connector. The cylinder that houses the pad/tube will slip off the bottom, just like a u87 comes apart.

you twist off the bottom of the cylinder (bottom of the mic) when the bottom is unscrewed you side the cylinder off the body and you now have access to the workings inside.

Unscrew the lower half of the mic, to expose the circuitry. The tube is socketed, not soldered, so it's easy to pull out & switch.

This Tube mic (LTM500) advertises it's features as including both a low cut switch and a input pad switch. However, based on every available photo shown for this model, it is clear that the LTM500 does not have either of these features. They are nowhere to be found on either the mic body, nor on the power supply, whose only user control is for adjusting the polar pattern. Apparently, the only model that does appear to include both the High Pass filter and the input pad, is the mid-priced mic, the LC-200. Monoprice, can you please correct, or explain..... and then update the information as appropriate? Thanks.

I'm not Monoprice, but an owner of the LTM500. It -does not- have a high-pass filter, or a db pad. It has the pattern selector on the power supply.

Can this be easily adapted for use with a computer for video conferencing?
A shopper
on Jun 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: You would also need an audio interface to plug into your computer, and then you can select the audio interface as the input for your audio. But I would recommend either a large diaphragm condensor or just a large diaphragm dynamic microphone instead, as a tube mic like is a bit unnecessary for just doing video conferencing. You would have to deal with the separate power supply that comes with this mic, as well as waiting for the tube to warm up, worrying about having the right pickup pattern selected so you're hearing just your voice and not the room too. Tube mics are typically used in recording studios for recording vocals for songs, and for the warmth and vibe a tube mic has. I have the "Monoprice Large Diaphragm Condensor Mic" and honestly it sounds great, so that's what I would recommend for video conferencing, as well as some sort of audio interface, like a focusrite scarlett solo.

If you need a mic mostly for video conferencing, one of the USB mics would be more convenient to use; a USB headset would also work.

How long are the XLR cables that are included with the LTM500?
Ben
on Feb 20, 2021
BEST ANSWER: There is a special cable that connects the mic to the power supply/polar pattern selector box. It is not a standard 3-pin XLR cable but rather has a 7-pin XLR. It is a very nice 20' braided cable. As others have mentioned, you still need a 3-pin XLR to connect the box to your audio system.

What is the self noise level in dBA?
New User U
on Jul 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Though I haven't spec'd mine, the self-noise level is lower than most condensers. Just be sure you let the mic "warm up" prior to use. Meaning, get it all set up and plugged in, then turn on the power supply unit and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to let the tube warm into it's optimal temperature. Also, make sure you do not have the gain up on your I/O, board, console! Wait for the mic to warmup, then turn up your gain. This is a truly impressive mic!! I'll do a full review on it in the next few weeks after I use it in a few sessions. Dave

The website promo add mentions that this mic includes a high-pass filter, and a input pad.
However, there is no evidence that either feature actually exists. None of the photos show either feature. Furthermore, the downloadable spec-sheet also makes no mention of a high pass filter ( and it’s turn-over frequency, as well as how steep it's filter is (ie: 12dB/Octave roll-off @ 80Hz), nor an input pad (and how much attenuation - i.e.: -10dB….or whatever).
Do these two features actually exist on these mic’s?

BEST ANSWER: I have 5 of these mics. There are no adjustments for HPF or rolloff on the microphone itself or the external power supply. There is a highly variable adjustment of pattern (I think 8) from omni down to figure 8.

Mentioned in the advertising, & also on the spec sheet -- 10db pad, & low-cut filter. Where do I find the switches for these, please?

on Oct 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Reviews elsewhere say it has neither a pad nor a low-cut.. Also the spec sheet says it requires 48V Phantom which it doesn't. Also only comes with the one cable to attach it to its power supply, no second XR cable. I just ordered one, I'll update this if I find it any different. Oh, and it has a socketed tube unlike most inexpensive tube mics :) ,

sweet tube goodness
the case is whatever but the microphone delivers. We use this for vocals at practice or when you need to capture the whole room.. It's three pattens that can be adjusted to blend. The omni and dual are great for live (with headphones). Remember that tubes need to warm up. Low noise floor/calibrated sensitivity and the braided cable is excellent. The right tool for the right job. On sale it cant be beat. Peace.

Adequate Tube Mic
So far, on the few vocals I've tracked, there seems to be a lack of mid response, which will probably require a mod. While it is no Neumann or Telefunken, the price is right, Bob. You'd be hard pressed to beat this value. Anywhere.

So far very impressed
I've been wanting to order this since Monoprice started shipping it. I've owned their large diaphragm condenser mic for several years now and it's quite good. I used to own a Neumann U47vf14 (many years ago, when I worked as a recording engineer) and I've always regretted trading it away. I'm not going to argue that this 159 dollar mic is as good as that old Neumann, to tell you the truth these 68 year old ears probably couldn't tell the difference. But... it sounds very good, it really does. The packaging is quite impressive, it's own little carrying case (not that little really, the power supply is big) Nicely done, Monoprice.

Really nice, slightly warmer mic
Bought this for streaming and to have a unique mic (tube) for other applications.
Nice feel and weight.
Listing says it comes with 2 XLR but it does not, it only comes with the one that connects it to the power supply.
The foam cover was a bit deformed as it was squished in the packaging - purely a cosmetic issue as it still slid on snugly.
A cable wrap would have been nice to nicely pack / hold the excess XLR to the power supply.
