What are back and sides made of?

BEST ANSWER: It's a laminate, for sure. The top of the laminate (top layer) layer appears to be nato (a kind of mahogany like wood.) The finish is a very light finish on this guitar. This light finish helps it resonate, but offers a little less protection than a thicker poly finish.

Does this guitar have a solid spruce of just a "spruce" top which means it is laminated? Your ad says it both ways.

BEST ANSWER: I looked at this guitar closely at the soundhole to see if it's a solid top. I appears to me to not be a solid top. It's a lamiinate. However, it's a good quality laminate, and the guitar sounds very good to me. I have solid top guitars, and yes, they sound just a tad different. However, lanimates are generally more durable, and the modern laminates are amazing. If you were listening to someone playing you probably wouldn't know if the guitar has a laminate top or solit top. This guitar is very lightweight and resonates pretty well. It's definitely a decent sounding guitar, and the price makes it so that you don't ahve to treat it like a museum piece.

Does this have a plastic pick guard? There's no pick guard in the picture, but one of the reviewers uploaded a picture of his guitar, which did have a pick guard.

Excellent Value. Buy It.
This guitar is an excellent deal. You really get a lot for yout money with Monoprice stuff, and this is o exception. This guitar is a laminate top guitar (despite being called a solid top, in some ads.) Modern laminates are amazing. The modern technology for making laminates results in a high quality composite. Yes, laminate top guitars sound different than solid top guitars. They don't resonate to the extent that a solid top guitar does, however, with the high quailty of modern laminate top guitar, they can produce a very nice sound. And, for certain applications (like recording) they can be less boomy than solid top guitars. Remember that the ES335 style guitars use a laminated maple. This acoustic guitar, sounds nice. Is it as good as a more expensive guitars? Probably not, but you pay a whole lot for the extra 10% - 15% of sound quality. My opinion is that they did a great job on this gutar. It sounds nice, and it plays nice. The workmanship is very good. It has no scalloping on the braces, and that makes for a balanced sound. It has a pretty big sound (espeically while using a pick) that is even and clear. The tuners appear to be decent. It's a very lightweight guitar (making for better resonance.) This guitar will easily fill the needs of most players. I recommend this guitar. One of the really cool things about it is that you don't have to treat is like a precious, museum piece. It's an everyday strummer and picker. You can't go wroing with this guitar, unless you're a guitar snoot who likes the subtle nuances of expensive, opulent brand guitars. The lightweight finish on this guitar, makes for more resonance, but a little less protection from scratches, bumps. If you buy this guitar, I don't think that you'll be disappointed. Right out of the box this guitar's action was good (Monoprice seems to do a good job with this.) I hate to sound like an advertisement, but: What's not to like ? Yes, it's not a Taylor or Martin, and won't sound like them. However, when I'm standing on a patio jamming with the guys and their expensive guitar, and I have one of my economy guitars, no one is paying attention to that fact. They much more pay attention to the facti that I've put in the time to make play decent licks. They're not condentrating on the price of my guitar, and neither is an audience. They much more notice whether or not you've practiced your instrument. So, grab a Monoprice guitar, and show 'em what you've practiced. Chances are they're gonna dig it..

Can't go wrong
This is a well made acoustic for the money. The fit and finish are great. Neck is good and straight, frets are finished pretty good. I hand cut a bone nut and installed a bone saddle and it woke it up!! Very bright and clear. I wish someone would make a guitar like this with a 2mm wider nut. This is my traveler, my S6 cedar will stay my main player.

How can they make these so inexpensive?
I needed an inexpensive guitar for work and chose this one. I have played guitar for 4 decades and don't get hung up by what's on the headstock. The bound fretboard actually feels kinda fancy. The rest of the guitar almost feels unfinished. Decent action out of the box, stretched the strings and it stays in tune. Plain spruce top not much to look at but booming midrange and decently articulate for a new top, even with the cheap strings it comes with. Very pleased with my purchase.

Liked the older version more
The first acoustic I bought from monoprice is an easy 5 across the board. This one is close, but an errant fret and the rather plain headstock detracts. Still a good guitar and especially for the light entry expense!

A lot of bang for the buck.
After shopping local, I decided to take a chance on the Idyllwild. I'm so glad I did. Almost perfect out of the box. I changed to lighter strings and did a truss rod adjustment. The neck is super comfy and the sound is bright with good midrange response. I've already recorded with it. Easily the best deal for an acoustic in this price range.

Monoprice Has Another Hit!
Solid spruce top, great price, what's not to like? Put Slinky 10's on it, tuned it in perfect 4ths, and I have an acoustic blues machine. Thanks Monoprice. Love it!
