Are the pickups noiseless?

What you are referring to is patented Fender technology, so you won't find that here. That being said, this is an incredible sounding guitar at an incredible price (I got mine on sale for $80 a few weeks ago, but I would still have paid $100 for it, knowing what I know now).
It is built with tinkerers in mind, so if you wanna put new strings, pickups, different mono out jack, etc., you can do any or all of those things (maybe you wanna spring for the genuine Telecaster noiseless pickups down the road?) and it won't cost you a small fortune for the real deal. It still looks and sounds great, and you can throw it in the bag, and take it out with you to lessons, band practice, gigs, and not have to worry about potential damage to a valuable collector's item.
It is my first electric guitar. I have hardware and software synthesizers and FX pedals for days, and decided I would like to incorporate some guitar work in the music I am making in my solo project. I am super happy that I bought this guitar. Maybe I will get a genuine Tele down the road, but I am in no rush as this thing looks and sounds great for all that I intend to do with it. I hope this helps! :)

This guitar sounds remarkable, especially considering the cost. It sounds a lot like a telecaster and does not have noisy pickups. I was blown away by how good this guitar is. You may want to do a little fret work on it. Mine played fine right out of the box and I have not done any fret work on it. However, if you run you fingers along the edges of the frets, it would be better if they were a little smoother. My oldest son is a guitar player and the frets seemed fine to him. I play mostly keyboards but also some guitar. Buy the guitar. You will be happy you did.

These pickups sound great and provide a really authentic Telecaster tone with this guitar. In terms of noise, here is what to expect:
With pickup selector set to either the neck only or bridge only positions there is a very subtle hum as expected from a single coil pickup. However, when pickup selector is set to the middle position using both neck and bridge pickup there is no noise due to phase cancellation between the two pickups providing a rich, fat, noiseless tone.

In the middle position there is no noise on either pick up .the neck and the bridge position have a slight bit of hum which is normal for single coil pickups. All in all for a $100 guitar it sounds pretty good.

No - they're standard inexpensive single coil pickups. You could put single-coil-sized noiseless pickups in. Fender noiseless pickups cost about as much as this guitar does from Monoprice!

No. The middle position doesn’t produce any noise, but the others do as with any single coil. I took the pick guard of and insulated it which helped a little.

Since wood is a product of nature which can retain varying levels of moisture, there can be significant variation in the weights of guitars, even within the same brand, model and type of wood. If you have a chance to visit a larger guitar retailer, it may be worthwhile to check the weights of several guitars from a group you prefer. You will most likely find that the lightest guitar in your group is significantly lighter than the heaviest one.
Also, I’ve read that the new Squire Sonic series have bodies that are thinner than earlier versions of Telecaster, Strat, Mustang, etc. Hope this helps!

I own this tele and was blown away by the quality. I did not expect it from a guitar that cost less than $100. Amazing. That being said, light is not a word I’d use to describe it. A major brand has a model named after a sports car that’s been around for ages, 24” scale, light as a feather, plays great, similar price range as these folks. I have an Indio Telecaster and the other company’s model, love both, play both, but when I don’t have a lot of umph, I pick up the other.

I would not put this guitar in the category of “light.” Mine weighs in a just over 8 pounds. I know their are some other brands out there that have lighter designed guitars (Michael Kelly comes to mind) but they also seems to be much pricier. Sweetwater has a way to sort by weight but it seems most of the lighter instruments are limited in features, 3/4” size, or not very serious beginner instruments. Again, I’m talking in the same price range.

Hi David
I have one of these and like most solid body electrics it's about 7 pounds. They can be up to 8.5 pounds on average. These are nice guitars for this price point. If the weight is an issue you could buy a silent guitar by Yamaha which would be very lightweight however they are in the $500 range. Other than that look at acoustics or travel guitars. I hope thus is off help.

I don't have a scale accurate enough to give you a precise weight. But this is a full size Telecaster replica and the Fender Tele weighs in at 7 - 8 lbs. It has a thick body, no sculpting like the Strat. For a full size electric, it weighs more than most.

Do these come with locking tuners?

BEST ANSWER: The original Monoprice Classic guitars did come with a set of locking tuners. The new model, Indio Retro Classics do not come with locking tuners. The tuners are sealed style and work well, but are not lockers. Don't let this discourage you, in my opinion you will not find a better value in a guitar for this price. You can always upgrade tuners should you feel the need.

What type of fretboard does the blonde model have?
New User U
on Jan 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It's not rosewood that's for sure. It's a synthetic wood, probably rocklite (doesn't look like richlite). Very hard and brittle (many compare it's tone to ebony). Does not take oil very well but apparently it doesn't need much hydration as it's so stiff. It looks very much like wood. Even has that nice three dimensional shimmer to it once you sand it to a high grit.

Not sure if the fretboards are genuine rosewood, but a wood very similar to rosewood, looks good. By the way, don't hesitate to buy one of these guitars; you can't beat them for the price. I really like mine, and I haven't found anything wrong anywhere on the guitar so far. For the price you can afford to do a little tweaking if necessary, but I haven't done anything to mine other than smoothing the fret ends a little bit.

The version I have from several months ago has something similar to rosewood. It could be rosewood, but per CITES regulations it is likely something else, like roseacer or thermally treated maple of some form. Feels and looks pretty good however, and can't beat it for the price. The rosewood fretboard look with the blonde body on this guitar is very classy looking.

I bought one. No regrets! I prefer this over the affinity. The neck was straight, the tone is great. You may want to swap the pick ups. I won't. They sound fine to me. Be prepared to sand down the fret edges. Mine were sharp. No big deal at all. The frets needed no leveling. I didn't have any fret buzz at all. Hope this helps!

I can’t comment on the slim C aspect of your question- never heard the term- but the neck is indistinguishable from a genuine Fender maple neck. I was given the real thing shortly after, installed it, and other than the shape of the peg head it plays and feels identically.

I don't know the Fender neck shapes but it is a C not a V (pointy) shape. Here are measurements in inches. Neck thickness (back to fretboard) above 1st fret- .825.
Above 12th fret - .900.
Nut width. 1.66. Width at 12th. 2.05
Fretboard is 12" simple radius.

Not quite as slim as a Squire. But I have shorter fingers than a lot of men, and I prefer this guitar over a squire. I play both and it’s not an issue for me. I installed some Alnico 5 pickups, made in Korea I got off of Aliexpress for $22 for the set. I wouldn’t trade my Indio now for any Squire. My opinion only.

The neck isn't too thin. Not as thick as a les paul but it does have a good feel for an import. I love mine. The tuners, bridge, PUs and pots needs upgrading if you want to use it for stage, but other than that it's a good guitar.

is the nut on the Retro flat or curved?
A shopper
on Jan 6, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Quite an interesting question for a guitar under $100! The nut is well cut and fits the radius of the fretboard fine so yes it is probably curved. Plastic but I have no problem with the strings or intonation. I bought several cheap guitars to modify and this one actually needs nothing except maybe better pickups but it was fine out of the box. I did install new pickups and relic it. Love the result!

All nuts (on all guitars) are flat on the bottom, but then curved on the top. The string slots need to be cut so that they match the radius of the fretboard. (The slots are cut at the factory, but often need to be cut deeper to give a good playing action, as part of the setup.) The top of the nut is usually curved to be similar to the fret radius.

The nut on the Retro Classic t-style guitar is fairly flat but no guitar neck is truly flat, they all have a curve to them called a radius. Any nut that will fit a regular Stratocaster or Telecaster should work from what I can judge from looking at the specs and the guitar in my hands.

For $100 you can’t go wrong. I have 8 guitars and this plays just as well as the more expensive ones I have. The sound from the pick ups seems slightly less responsive but definitely not a huge setback. It was set up very nice when it came in the mail. It was actually fairly tuned as well. So I’m assuming someone at the factory actually physically checked it out before sending it. Wow! Who does that anymore? Great job mono price. Although I still consider this entry level guitar. I give two thumbs up.

i just purchased one this month. I don’t know who’s set it up. The guitar was playable but not set up to my standards. String height was inconsistent. Truss rod needed adjustment; neck relief had to much bow. The depth of the nut slots were inconsistent. I do my own set ups, so not a big deal for me. For $99 I think you get one heck of a guitar. If you buy one and it’s like mine, it will need some setup work.

If you really want to improve the sound, replace the bridge bolts with bolts with a more aggressive thread, the ones it comes with have very fine threads. I have one of these guitars and I loved it but I'm trying to replace the bridge. What style is the bridge? Is it vintage, American Standard or something else?
Matt
on Jul 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Your guitar has a dual-load (string-thru or top loan), 10,5mm import, 3 screw bridge. You can replace it with the same style. Any upgrade bridge will most likely require a modification to the guitar, 3 screw to 4 screw, etc.

Just to let you know, I have a blue Indio Retro Classic and I see no reason to change anything on this guitar. Mine plays fine , the pickups are fine, it has Standard frets instead of medium jumbo and that is a definite PLUS. The neck is as good as some Fenders. It is a nice all round guitar.

Thank you for your reply. I not replacing it because I don't like the bridge, I'm trying to put a specialized bridge on it and need to know what style the current one is.
OK, I understand. As before, it is a Fender Telecaster type bridge. Good luck.

Stewart MacDonald is the place to purchase. They will have what you need and they can tell you for sure if it's American Standard. The Fender Mexico, US made and China made guitars use standard sized parts (for the most part); it's the quality that varies. It's shouldn't be difficult to get what you're looking for the upgrade.

The vintage 3-saddle "ash tray" Tele bridge is not a drop-in replacement---the screw hole patterns are different. I believe the bridge that comes with the Indio T-style guitar is the same as the Squier Standard Tele bridge. You might search the TDPRI forum for more help.

What is the body wood?
A shopper
on Feb 3, 2019
Don't know what wood it is. Nevertheless, some info that may be useful: It weighs around 8.25 lbs and is a great electric guitar, a bargain with a gig bag that comes with it. Also it sounds great at this price point. Also, if you have problems with your purchase, the CS manager, Paul S. , will help you resolve it. At least, that's my experience. Good luck.

Is this Telecaster style routed out for humbucker pickups in both positions?
New User U
on Aug 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: It has standard single as pictured. You could swap those out for other singles, but humbuckers, especially if you're thinking of the larger, Gibson-style humbuckers, won't fit. Overall, it's a great guitar for the price. Mine played fine out of the box - I even used it on a gig because my main guitar was i the shop. Also, the gig big is surprisingly nice.

Mine had a single rout in the neck. No humbucker rout. I used a sharp wood chisel to enlarge my neck rout to put in a humbucker. One word of caution, this guitar is not solid wood, but particleboard. So, go slowly.

What is the clear finish on the blonde model? Polyurethane, Lacquer or something else?

The whole guitar's (headstock excluded), is the same as a standard telecaster. And, you should also be aware that Fender themselves changed the tele neck at times. The Indio (Monoprice) seems to weigh more than a Fender/Squire. Most of the knockoffs have a basswood body. I think mine has an ash body.

Has modern 10mm holes, so most tuners should fit ok. I've upgraded the tuners, not to locking, though.

a good guitar but needs work
I will start out by saying this is a good guitar for the price. I chose to give it only 2 stars because I want to warn parents that purchase this guitar for a beginning student. This guitar is good but will have to be repaired by a qualified luthier right out of the box. The problem is unlevel frets that cause some notes to die out when bending. If Monoprice can fix this issue, then I would give this guitar 4 stars.

Great guitar at an AMAZING price!
Great guitar for the price. Well set up. Excellent tone. Terrific woods for the neck and fretboard. Just an unbelievable bargain. I removed the black pickguard (which is still very sharp) and repainted it mint. Guitar looks like it cost a thousand.

Very good value for the price. It was playable out of the box. The volume and tone controls were very smooth. The nut was rough cut but the right height. I took sandpaper and made the edges smooth. The pots were dime-sized. The pups sounded fine. Fit and finish were very good. The neck was not too tick or thin. Overall good first guitar. If you want to upgrade pots to bigger size, you will have expand the cavity since regular pots won't fit.

Excellent Telecaster
The neck and body wood are great, providing excellent tone. The look and feel of the guitar out of the box was flawless. Came with a gig bag and tools for the truss rod and bridge adjustment. I adjusted the string height a tad and turned it quickly into a daily go to guitar. It is fairly light too (in weight) to my surprise. Just can't beat the feel of a maple neck w/rosewood fretboard with a finish that is just as sweet as my Fender Tele.

poor quality control
I have purchased several electric guitars from Monoprice and have always been satisfied with the quality. But, I purchase two of the telecasters and they were both unplayable due to the nut was cut too deep!! The strings dragged when trying to play any open chord and on further inspection, it was obvious they were aware of the problem because the adjustments for the strings at the bridge were adjusted all the way trying to raise the strings off the frets. Monoprice states that the guitars are professionally set up?!? Also, the nut that they use is not a standard size

insane for $68
I got this on sale, so it was even cheaper than normal. I honestly can't fault anything major on it at all. It's crazy how good some cheap instruments are with the advent of CnC machines.
It twangs just like a tele should, so when i need that sound, i got it for less than the cost of a dinner date. bonkers good
