Works with Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
I gotta say... I never (and I mean NEVER) provide reviews for anything. However, I just HAD to say how happy I am with my new Monoprice 8"x6" Graphic Tablet.

I had been considering purchasing a tablet (mainly for photo editing) for several years now, but always found the price of the Wacom tablets prohibitive. After stumbling upon this Monoprice product, I admit, I was sceptical but for the price (a fraction of the cost of the "other" tablets) I decided I really didn't have much to lose.

The item came well packaged and arrived quickly to my home in Ontario, CANADA via USPS. (I wasn't pleased with the $10.00 Customs fee, but I cannot hold that against Monoprice.) After opening the package, I found everything to be in order. The 2nd pen and replacement nibs are very nice extras, which ultimately swayed my decision away from the larger tablet Monoprice offers.

Installing this tablet in Ubuntu was fairly straight forward, but certainly not for the very faint of heart. A great step-by-step guide can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/TabletSetupWizardpen. My tablet is now working 100% in Ubuntu (except for the various shortcuts located around the edge of the tablet). It is immediately recognized by my laptop and even supports hot swapping. Setting up pressure sensitivity in GIMP was simple (Edit Preferences Input Devices Configure Extended Input Devices). It is even working under Windows XP in Virtual Box OSE.

All-in-all, I am surprised by the quality and compatibility of this product. It looks & feels well made, is very responsive, and comes at a very affordable price. I was a bit worried about the quality of the pen at first, but since receiving the product I have no complaints. The pen is not too heavy or bulky and should prove to be comfortable over an extended period of use.

Simply awesome!!!! I absolutely love this product and can easily recommend it to both family and friends.

    Great for the price but...
This is a nice big tablet for Ultra cheap. The only problem with it is that my mac wouldn't recognize it. Whenever I touched the pen to the tablet, it just swooped down to the right. Tech support had no solution, but I finally figured out that a USB driver for another device was taking over the input signal. Disabling the driver took care of the problem. The offending program was "USB Overdrive", and setting it to "Ignore" the device allowed the tablet's driver to control the device.

    Works great with Mac
This tablet works perfectly with the Mac. Just install the driver and plug in the tablet. One thing that was unexpected, though not a problem, is that the pens require a (included) AAA battery to operate. Cannot say how long they last as we've only had it a few days, but so far no problems.

The tablet itself is nice. Supports most features a Wacom tablet does (and far cheaper). On the Mac side at-least we can configure each and every "hot-point" button on the tablet to any of 3 functions: Open application, open URL, perform key-combination. And there are a total of 42 hot-spots on the tablet. Even the "pre-programmed" ones can be re-programmed to do other stuff (we don't have IE so the Internet Explorer button opens Safari instead now).

One thing we have noticed that we cannot do is have the tablet work across multiple screens. I have 2 screens and the tablet will only "recognize" the primary, but really no big deal. I don't often have graphics spanning multiple monitors as the edges make it hard to draw.

The only thing we really do not like about this tablet is there is not a 9x12 version!

    good starter tablet
Bought this tablet as an inexpensive alternative to a Wacom. It has worked very well and given me a good idea of how a tablet can work for me. The pen is sometimes too sensitive, causing the pointer to click and drag when I am just navigating my desk top, other than that works great. Oh yeah, and sometimes the short cut strokes do not work, depends on the current program i guess.

PROS: inexpensive, adjustable, compatible w/ mac and PC

CONS: too sensitive in some cases, shorts cuts don't always work

Damn good tablet! Believe the Hype!!!
I don't normally write reviews, but I've got to do so for this tablet. First, like many of you reading this, I did not believe that something so cheap could be reliable or half-way decent, given the cost of the competition (wacom... cough). But then I figured, what did I have to lose with a $40 dollar investment (as opposed to $300-$400)?

The 10x6 tablet I received looks and feels well made, and the setup on my macbook pro took less than 5 minutes. (it came promptly within 4 days of ordering from this very website!)

It works great with my CS4 illustrator and photoshop. One issue that came up with Illustrator and the monoprice tablet was I could not initially customize pressure sensitive brushes . That problem was resolved when I tried installing my tablet on another mac that already had wacom bamboo drivers... It seems the wacom drivers activated the necessary features on illustrator, which the monoprice can then piggy back on.

Thus, if you wish to activate the pressure sensitive or tllt brush features for Illustrator on your computer without a wacom, first install wacom drivers, and then remember to re-install the monoprice ones (or else the tablet won't work properly).

In summary, while it may not be the ultimate, top-of-the-line tablet(with top-shelf pricing...), for $40 dollars, it's a great buy and will serve the casual enthusiast, and most professionals more than adequately.

Believe the reviews, this tablet just makes great sense for such a great balance between price and performance! You won't be disappointed.

Great if you have decent graphics software
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. We use Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) on a five year old iMac Intel Core Duo. The tablet's driver installed and works great, but I was expecting it to install a system preference pane, not an application. I am even more concerned that there's no website, or easy way to upgrade the software. Monoprice should correct this by providing a "support" link on the product page! (It has their name on the device, so I would expect them to support it!)

At first, I tried to use it with an open source drawing program called Gimp. The software responded so slowly to the tablet that it was useless. This was probably a configuration issue, but I couldn't figure it out. After that, I tried Photoshop Elements 6, and the response improved dramatically. Then, after reading some good reviews of Pixelmator (a Mac specific program), I bought it through the new "App Store" in 10.6.6. It's normally a $60 program, but to help promote the Apple Store, it's currently half that. This program works great with the tablet! It's very responsive except for a few complicated brushes. Even though Pixelmator is inexpensive, many say that it's on par with Photoshop for many things. It has a lot of different brushes and tools. Check it out. I'm not trying to sell Pixelmator to you, though. I'm just trying to say that there are some inexpensive programs out there on the Mac that this graphics tablet works really well with. Good graphics software is what really makes this tablet shine.

PROS: Tablet seems well built. Pens are okay, but not great.
Software driver seems fine, but it should be a system preference, not an application.
    Awesome for the price.
    Pressure sensitivity seems very natural.

CONS: Software driver updates aren't available online.

    Tablet
This tablet is AMAZING!!!!!!. for $35 you are getting a tablet that other companies would sell to you for $100, maybe even 100's. it has an 8x10 drawing area, and it comes with 2 pens! 2 batteries! and extra tips! and the pen stand and tip remover! software for both mac and pc! and, the best part of it, is its 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. works amazingly on photoshop and Zbrush, and probably, in most all other tablet recognizing software. It also works seamlessly with windows 7, so all beta users will enjoy this. Another great feature, is all the custom buttons it has around the drawing border which you can change to do different key strokes, open different programs, and almost anything. I buy a lot of this from Monoprice for 2 reasons...Quality and Price. These guys know what they're doing, and honestly deserve ever penny for what they give. Monoprice doesn't cheap you on everything, and if ther's any problems customer service is there to help. LOVE YOU GUYS! there's just no better way to put it.

    good deal
My previous tablet was a Wacom Bamboo, which had a non-removable cord and eventually broke. I decided to give this one a try because it is much more affordable. I bought this at the same time that my brother got a small Intuos 5 for himself, so I was able to compare both. You cannot install both Monoprice and Wacom drivers on the same computer (they will conflict and the second tablet you install will not have any pressure sensitivity).

Intuos is better in some aspects: it has a sleeker design, its more comfortable to use on your lap (if you are lazy like me), and it has a removable USB. The coloring was indeed a lot smoother if you are painting with opacity. Keep in mind though, that you could buy 5 Monoprice tablets for the price of a small Intuos! I would take the Monoprice if you are drawing for a hobby like me.

Monoprice gets the job done for a much cheaper price. Though I found the Intuos superior for painting with opacity, the Monoprice works great for sketching and inking. I actually prefer Monoprice to my old Bamboo for drawing outlines. It is important that you follow the booklet instructions before plugging the tablet into your computer, since the pressure sensitivity won't work if you don't set up the drivers first. I use the drivers on the disc, but you can also get the updated version of the drivers on uc-logic.com The programs I tested include Photoshop CS5, Painter 12, SAI, and Sketchbook...they all worked great with the Monoprice tablet. :)

I like the extra plastic flap attached to the Monoprice because it prevents or slows down scratching. I read that you could put your paper sketches underneath the flap and trace over it. This tablet comes with an extra pen, so you don't have to panic if you misplace it. Replacement pens and nibs are also really affordable. Overall, I recommend it!

PROS: good price, pressure sensitivity, works in several programs for Win 7 64bit

CONS: USB cable is not removable, cannot install other brand tablets on same computer

    3/5
My order was handled promptly and efficiently and I'm still amazed at the low price for a pen tablet. While it functions perfectly, my greatest frustration is it's inability to work in extended desktop with my Mac. No problem on my PC but it is either incompatible with dual on the Mac or requires additional drivers. Calls to tech service and no small amount of searching the Internet have not provided a solution. If this issue could be solved, I would happily give the product a "10".

I want to use this for copying and pasting in word documents. Is it possible to use it in that function? I'd highlight paragraphs in word documents and paste it into another document, etc.

BEST ANSWER: Hello, you may use this as a regular mouse if you prefer. You can still copy and paste but it will still be in conjunction with a keyboard. I hope this helps, and thank you for your question!
