Can you put ice in this thing? If so, does it keep ice cold very well? Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can put ice in it so long as you keep it upright to keep water out of the electric cooling fan. I prefer to cool it down in advance of my trips, using those frozen blue ice substitutes, which are also great because they keep it colder longer for when you don't have access to plug it in. Using it without ice also gives you much more room for drinks, etc. Just remember to turn it off or unplug it if you leave the vehicle for long periods of time, so you don't run your battery down. Also, it is important to note that this does a great job of keeping cold things cold or hot things hot, but don't expect it to take room temperature items and heat or cool them quickly.

I was disappointed in this unit. You could put ice in it to get the box cooler to start with, but it wouldn't prolong the ice for very much longer than a normal cooler. That would also defeat the purpose of having a dry cooler as the ice would still melt.

How long does it take to get cold inside?
A shopper
on Dec 29, 2024
BEST ANSWER: The cooler setting blows cold air immediately but how long it takes to chill the contents depends on the starting temperature of the items and how much stuff is in the cooler. The cooler will take a long time to chill room temperature items and is actually designed to keep cold items cold (pre-chilled items) or hot items warm (pre-warmed items) but asking it to chill room temperature items or warm room temperature items will take a long time. Instead, I take cold items out of my refrigerator or from a store's cold drink section and put them in the cooler to keep them cold. It excels at this., especially for long drives. I have not used it to keep food hot yet, but the same principle applies.

The manual says """2. In the environment of 25°C (77 F), the cooling temperature difference between the middle and
lower parts of the box can reach more than 20°C (delta of 36 F)."""
77F - delta of 36 = 41F? Or in other words, if the outside temperature, and an empty cooler is plugged in, it will reach 41F on the inside? Note that a standard house fridge should be kept at 37F, so if the 36 degree difference between inside and outside holds true, then "safe" fridge temps can only be maintained if the outside is 73F or lower. i.e. if the ambient is 90F (a hot summer day in the shade), the interior will rise to 54F!
So for better food safety, the compressor powered fridge would be better (can maintain a much higher temperature differential)

BEST ANSWER: Hello, and thank you for your inquiry. Your understanding of this semiconductor refrigerator is correct. The temperature of this refrigerator changes with the environment ambient temperature. For instance, the cooling temperature for this can go down to 41°F (5°C), if the environment ambient temperature is around 77°F (25°C), which is the delta of 36°F or in Celsius, 20 degree difference. This would be centered around the middle and lower part of the refrigerator as that holds the average inside temperature for the entire fridge.

How long does it stay hot or cold after you unplug it?
A shopper
on May 15, 2024
BEST ANSWER: Hello, and thank you for your question. The length of how long it stays at a certain temperature depends on a few things. If, the refrigerator is empty, while at an ambient room temperature of 77°F (25°C), after cooling, the fridge will hold the cold temperature for about 65 minutes and can then rise from 41°F to 59°F (5°C to 15°C). After heating, the fridge will hold the warm temperature for about 145 minutes and can then lower from 122°F to 86°F (50°C to 30°C). If the refrigerator has things in it, it can hold its inside temperature for a longer time.

Very Useful and a Money Saver
I've had mine for a month and it works great. It saves me money, because I can bring a salad and other things into work for lunch. It does a great job keeping my drink cold too. I bought a 12 volt power supply that has a cigarette lighter outlet for using the cooler in my office. I hope Monoprice would sell the adapter and extra power cables for when I move the cooler from my vehicle to indoors.
