BEST ANSWER: The USB connection is for power. This conversion actually requires circuitry
that needs a power source. My cable is currently connected as directed and
works very well.

I have a Macbook Pro with only USB-C ports, and I want to connect it to a monitor with DisplayPort input. I've connected a dongle/hub with HDMI and USB-A ports to the laptop. Will this cable work if I'm plugging it into the hub and not directly into the input source?

I have a KVM with HDMI ports and a Dell docking station for my lapotop with DP ports. I used HDMI cables and bought HDMI-DP adapters on another site ("Warrky 4K DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter Cable, (2K 60Hz, 1080p 120Hz) Uni-Directional Display Port to HDMI Monitor Converter Compatible for HP, Dell, GPU, AMD, NVIDIA, More. Male to Female. Passive"). It works fine 99% of the time, but for every hour or so the monitors attached to my KVM blink off for a second or two. No data is lost (if it happens during a Zoom I still hear sound on the speakers attached to the KVM and they can still see my on the webcam attached to the KVM). Is it the adapters that don't work and this cable would solve it?

HDMI to DisplayPort Review
This cable does exactly what I needed it to do. I had recently received a newer laptop from my company (in a Tech Refresh), and the higher resolution of its (smaller) screen (as compared to the older model) had become just too small for my aging eyes. I had a separate monitor here at home, but lacked the necessary cable to make use of this larger display. Found what I wanted at Monoprice, and having used them for other things in the past, knew I need not look any further. The item simply works perfectly. Can't ask for any more than that.

Working great
I bought this item to connect my macbook to my kvm switch which only has display port inputs. So far, it is working as advertised and I am quite happy with it.
NOTE: You must plug the hdmi and usb connectors into your laptop in order for it to have power to drive the display port output.
