how does stitch control the television?

BEST ANSWER: This product is a wall switch. To control a television (on and off only!) you need to plug the the TV into an electrical socket that is controlled by a switch on the wall. Replace the switch with the STITCH switch then you can use Alexa to turn it on and off.

This switch is not for controlling a Television. Even if you used it for such an event then it can only send current to the TV where a TV has to be on all the time. It may still not work in newer televisions.

Will this work on with traditional light bulbs. I keeping on promising that as my light bulbs burn out, I will replace them with smart ones. The problem is they are not burning out. Will this device allow me using "google" to turn of the lights. Also they are certain lights in my house where they are a part of light panel with 4 and 2 switches for different lights. How can I go about replace one light switch in this configuration?

BEST ANSWER: These are good switches though the interaction with automation is still early as the price shows. The software/configuration is not super simple but not "rocket science" either. If I get your question right you have multi-gang switches (i.e. multiple switches in a box) - replacing each switch with a separate one of these would work, though these are bigger (deeper) than traditional switches. I was lucky to be doing new installation so made sure to have deep outlet boxes to accommodate the wire and switches. Hope that helps!

Yes. The wall switch is only to turn the power on and off. When you have smart bulbs, the wall switch is always on supplying power to the bulb which has the controls embedded in it. Don't worry the smart bulbs draw very little power when not fully on. I think my bill changed less than a dollar every 10 months.

Yes, this switch is designed to work with traditional light bulbs. It also is compatible with standard and three way switches. However, be aware that it requires power at the switch. Often times power is only available at the light fixture. In those cases, this device will not work.

Yes it works with traditional bulbs. You can use Google/Alexa on them. They can be wired for 2 and 3-way configurations. In the 3 way config you only need to do one switch.

I have smart bulbs, I'm looking for a switch where I can physically turn the switch off, but still control the bulbs from Alexa or Homekit... Will this work?
Jarelle M
on Apr 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The use of physical switches is PROBLEMATIC with smart home systems. With smart bulbs, you do NOT want to physically turn them off, you want to LOGICALLY turn them off. That is essentially what ALEXA/GOOGLE are doing with voice. Trying to send logical control via a physical wired switch is NOT yet available. At SOME POINT in time, switch makers will begin implementing ALEXA's MOTION/SENSOR API which will allow changes in state to be recognized by ALEXA/GOOGLE, but to date, I do not see anything like that on the market.

That is exactly what I’m trying to figure out how to accomplish, logically turn the lights off with a switch, then logically turn them back on with Alexa/HomeKit. I have all Phillip hue bulbs but want the convenience of being able to have someone else who isn’t aware the bulbs are smart to be able to use the lights

This switch replaces an existing wall mounted switch and is controlled through the stitch app. It also works with Alexa. Using a smart bulb is redundant. A regular wall switch can turn off your smart bulb but then you would have to turn the switch back on at some time for the smart bulb to work again.... this switch works with regular non smart bulbs. I have 5 or 6 of these switchs in my home and really like setting them up for complete home automation but also controllable with Alexa.

I have Google Home and this pitch works with Google home. I can say Hey Google, turn off light and the light goes off. The lights I have are not smart lights, so that means the switch is a switch and opens the circuit so no electricity is flowing to the light. The smart light would not have power when the switch was off. While the switch was on, I would imagine that your part smart bulb would operate as normal.

This does turn on and off at the switch and from the stitch app. It is not yet HomeKit compatible but I believe it is Alexa connectable. I don’t have Alexa but it works great for manual control, app control and programmed timers. I use it for a porch light, on at sundown and off at sun up.

Do these work in a 3-way switch setup?
A shopper
on Mar 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they are designed to work in a 3-way configuration. Note that because of the electronics, the switch must be wired to a neutral, even in a 2-way configuration. So instead of only the two standard hot/load lines on basic switch, you must connect hot, load, and neutral. There is a 4th connection for a traveler for your setup. Take a look at the User Manual for wiring details: https://downloads.monoprice.com/files/manuals/35557_Manual_181212.pdf

In my case, yes, I needed to use the neutral wire. I did a search for smart switch and neutral wire and found some good explanations as to why I needed it. Basically, the Stitch always needs power. My previous switch was just a simple 2-wire switch that mechanically opened and closed the circuit.

STITCH by Monoprice Wireless Smart Plug Mini with Energy Monitoring & Reporting; Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Home for Voice Control, No Hub Required
BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't, except for the oddest cases.
When you turn the plug off in Stitch, you will see and be able to control it from Google, Stitch App, etc. and it will show "off" only if there is power to the plug. It's using a very tiny amount of power to listen for a change.
When you turn the Wall switch off, the normal plugs on that line will be off, you will see and be able to control the switch from Google, Stitch App, etc. and the switch will show "off". Then with no power to the plug it your Stitch account cannot connect to the plug and cannot tell you it's off.
To make sure the plug is on you would have to turn the switch on, wait about 15 seconds for the plug to reconnect to WiFi, then check the status of the plug. The plug usually remembers its last on/off status and WiFi password, or you can go back to the location and use Bluetooth to retrain it.
Say you wanted an entire rack of modems, routers, and APs turned off by one switch and a separate WiFi router running a sub network for guests that doesn't get a good WAN address if turned on before the rest finishes booting. You would do better to have two plugs and name them "1 - Total System" and "2 - Guest network" so the UPS can be in a third outlet. (Remove the 1 and 2 if you wish to be the only person who can remember how to turn it back on correctly.)

Will this work with a switch that has a ceiling fan on it? The switch controls the fan and light in one.
Brandon K
on Jan 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The full specs say it can support up to 1/2HP motor, so if your ceiling fan's motor is < 1/2HP you should be fine. Note that 1/2HP ~= 372W, so your HP limit will be (372 minus your combined bulb wattage) divided by 745. For example, if you have two 12W (75W equivalent) LED bulbs, you'd take 372 - 24 = 348, then 348 / 745 = 0.46 HP... if your ceiling fan's motor is rated 0.4 HP (or less) you should be fine. Similarly, if you have two 60W incandescent bulbs, you'd take 372 - 120 = 252, then 252 / 745 = 0.33 HP -- that same 0.4 HP fan would NOT be okay (but if it's rated 0.3 HP you're fine).

BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. In the Stitch app, just go to the "Smart" tab on the button of the screen, then "Automation" and press the "+" icon. While there, you can add the Condition of motion sensor-ON and the Action being setting the light switch to ON. You can play around with the different combinations of Conditions and Actions.

Is this controlled internally by an ESP8266 microcontroller? If so, how easy would it be to upload custom firmware to the device (eg: Sonoff-Tasmota)?

Do these stitch devices require Internet to work? Will they work with just Wi-Fi (with no Internet available) ?
i.e. I want to use them in a shop, but no Internet is available/practical.
Thanks in advance!

It’s tight
I use it to control my attic exhaust fan. Tip for setting up the wifi capability: keep your phone as close as possible to your router as opposed to the switch itself. Then just let the Stitch APP Auto find the device. Its a solid product.

Definite buy if you need a timer switch.
Installation is easy, provided you have the correct wiring. It requires a dedicated neutral. It also works as a three way switch, I didn’t need that so I can’t speak to that. The app is easy to download and use, just follow the included directions. It looks as in the picture, there’s a tiny blue indicator in the lower left corner. I’m very happy with it.

Excellent product, excellent APP, excellent connectivity to Google Home
After purchasing one (as a test), I've purchased (and installed) a house full of them (10-12) and am fully satisfied - not only with the Stitch Switch itself, but also the Stitch APP, and (importantly) the (easy) ability to connect it all to Google Home functionality. Highly satisified!!

Simple
Pay attention to the wiring - older houses may not have the neutral in the switch box. Ours installed super easy and has worked great with no problems. We setup in the Stitch app, which was easy, and also setup on our Echo on a schedule.
Will definitely buy more of these

Not standard 3-way wiring
Beware - these do not wire as standard 3-way switches. You have to rewire your existing circuit if used on a 3-way or 4-way circuit. Depending on where the power comes in versus where it goes out you'll have trace the wiring. This is designed to have the in and out in the same box which is not typical for a standard 3-way. Not for the average handyman.

This is a standout!!!
I have tried all of the off brand and import WiFi switches and each misses the mark. The main complaint i ha r with those is the lack of a true up and down rocker switch. Stitch is a real rocker, up for on and down for off. In addition, in a three way configuration, it is true Ly amazing! Many different ways to pair it with a simple 99 cent single rocker switch.
