Can these speakers be used as surround back?
Joseph K
on Mar 9, 2022
BEST ANSWER: These will be moved to my surround back speakers once I order the tower versions of these and in my opinion if you have enough power going to them, they will work great as surrounds. Might be a bit of an overkill, but in terms of sound, they are amazing. I run them as my fronts currently off an Emotive XPA 3 Channel amp, but will move them to a 5 Channel Emotiva as part of the surrounds. One piece you have to plan for if you want Atmos, is you will need to run two sets of speaker wire to the speaker, since they are driven separately.
I highly recommend these speakers.

Yes, but they may be overkill. If I remember correctly, I read a review that suggested using the smaller THX-265B THX for surround back. That seems to be good advice. The smaller speakers work well for me and take up less space. If space is an issue for you, the THX-365T THX may be too big.

Sure. They would pair well with the full height towers as fronts, particularly if your seating is far from your surround backs. If you’re seating is close to your back speakers and you don’t need volume that will melt your eardrums, the 265 bookshelf size may be a fine option instead.

You can use these speakers just about anywhere you like. I've used them in both left/right surround and surround back and my personal preference is surround left/right. Experiment and see what best fits your room.

I think they’d be overkill for surround rear…if you’re talking about having the Atmos enabled top speaker be the rear, I’d say no…they bounce of the ceiling and give a mid-surround sound.

Is this amplifier M8250x too much for the following 7.1.4 setup using only Monoprice equipment? THX-465T - L/R Fronts, THX-365C - Center, THX-365T - L/R Surround Sides & L/R Surround Backs, 4x Alpha In-Ceiling 8in with 15 degree Angled Drivers Product # 34198 (Atmos), M-215 subs. Because the HTP-1 is out of stock until June, 2023 I might have to pick up the Arcam AV41 to throw into this Monoprice exclusive setup. I already have the speakers. I need the correct powered equipment to push them.

Not at all. I use this amp to drive Goldenear SuperCinema X sound bar for front 3 and SuperSat 3s for surround and Atmos. It is PERFECT. It's clean and powerful with great dynamic range. It VANISHES in the background. But if you want to know output you can expect, search for "Peak SPL Calculator" and input the data. It will give you a good representation of what sound pressure level you'll achieve with this amp and those speakers.

Afraid I don't have any experience with those speakers but the amp definitely puts out (mine at least) the full advertised power. It may even be a bit conservative. I have it running front wide and 6 heights (7x running the other 7 base layer). I can also say that it blends quite well with the 7x despite being a "class D"... and it's a LOT lighter LOL

120 would be the lowest frequency you should set them at, but 150 might be better. Sound in the lower frequencies of a dolby Atmos enabled speaker will not bounce off the ceiling properly and you can lose the overhead effect of the speaker. Dolby recommends 120 as the minimum and some people recommend up to 200.

Hello Alex, If you want to use the upward Atmos speakers for your Atmos channels, the answer its yes.,
But I personally got more Atmos sounds when using separate Atmos speakers and placing them behind your seating area and installed on the ceiling or the higher part of the walls.
But even no using the the upper apward part of these speakers, the sound quality is very good for the price.

The atmos drivers do have their own binding posts, and require their own speaker wires. I,too, wished for the same speakers without those drivers, but in the end decided the price was still reasonable enough to buy them without planning to use the atmos drivers. I’m very happy with the front firing speakers and would recommend!

I have a marantz sr 6115 receiver and a power sound audio s3012 dual 15" subwoofer. I am remodeling my house and my greatroom will be approximately 24' wide by 22' deep with a 10' ceiling height. I am planning on using this mostly for movies and tv using 4 atmos channels. Would I be better off using the towers as fronts and the 365 as rears or using 4 365's all around or 2 365 as fronts and 2 265 as rears ? I will be using the 365 center as well.

Coming from smaller bookshelf speakers from another brand to 460 fronts and 365 surround in a 16 x 24 x 8h room with only the front 1/2 the space is set up for movies, I would not go 265 (also 265 is THX Select, smaller space, instead of THX Ultra the 365 or 465), 5.2.5 set up with Denon X4500H (separate high speakers)

From the bottom of the speaker the tweeter is 12" high... so you generally want the tweeters to be at ear height when you are seated.
For me, I'm 6'1"... my son is 6'"3" and we sit in Lazyboy chairs that are higher than normal, so our ear height is 39"... I got the 28" stands (+12" tweeter height) which puts the tweeter height at 40". Most people are smaller and will have lower furniture so the 24" stands will be most common.
The tweeter height on the floor standing version the THX-465T is 38", so 36"-40" height should be no problem, these speakers are said to have excellent vertical dispersion as measured by people much more knowledgeable than I.

I have on-ceiling speakers (definitive technology bookshelf speakers facing downward) for Dolby Atmos and I use these Monoliths for surrounds only, as they are THX certified and work extremely well with my other Monolith tower speakers. It is important to try to timbre match all speakers, front mains and surrounds, if possible, within a complete system setup. You are NOT wasting your money not using the Atmos portion, as for the money, these are a very great sounding speakers at an extremely reasonable price for what you get! I'm looking at the Monolith amps, and using these speakers for surrounds/atmos. The Monolith amps provide 100 watts per channel for the surrounds. Is 100wpc enough, or do these require a larger amp to drive the speaker better?

BEST ANSWER: It's only 100 watts if you are using the 9 or 11 channel amplifier, it's 200 watts otherwise. A couple of things, since you are using them for rear speakers, 100 watts is fine, and since these speakers are rated at 4 ohms, you will actually able to deliver more than 100 watts to the speaker.

100 watts from a monolith amp is like 1000 watts from a receiver. So yes, 100 watts from a real amp should be plenty for surrounds. Even if these are your main LCR speakers, since they don't make any real bass, you won't need a ton of power for them.

Do they need a stand or will a long table work? This is a bedroom setup and space is limited. I have a long TV stand with storage cubes in it. There is enough room on top for all my gear plus the speakers but no room outside of that. I could put a short speaker stand under them if needed.

BEST ANSWER: They would work sitting on opposite sides of the long table.

Hello! Could you please publish the measurements according to "Spinorama CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI)" standard?
These speakers look great with THX Ultra certification and you even started publishing a bit of measurements for the listening window. As you know that your horizontal dispersion is well designed, please provide the data in a proper CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI) graph to support the claim. Then these speakers will go on top of the recommendation list with probably unbeatable combination of objective measurements, price and design.

BEST ANSWER: We already published listening window measurements. Audioholics will be doing a review of these in the coming months, and I imagine they will conduct a set of CEA2034 measurements.

True, a review by James Larson at Audioholics could actually show the CEA2034 measurements. Strange thing is that you most likely have high quality CEA2034 graphs right now (as you did publish the listening window), but your customers will need to look at the certainly less optimal Audioholics measurements instead. Have a nice day!

What is the minimum output of an amplifier needed to effectively drive these speakers.? McIntosh 240. (2 channels rated @ 40watts each)

Extremely Happy Customer
Amazing product. THX certified Ultra and it shows. Great dynamics, great dispersion, great clarity, every seat is happy and they look really nice at least to our eyes. The front soundstage of 2 365t's and the 365c is seamless and amazing. A true cinema experience. Highly highly recommend. Speakers are not rear-ported hence that allows for flexible placement. In my case I have them right up against the wall. They definitely need a subwoofer but you're probably buying that anyway so I don't even consider this a negative. The speaker instead focuses on 80 hz+ and the quality on display is superb at all volumes.
As a bonus review I also have 2 265B's for surround and everything is just so seamless and all panning and surround effects render perfectly.

I couldn't be happier...
Having recently upgraded my home theater setup with four Monolith by Monoprice THX-365T THX speakers, I'm excited to share my experience. These speakers are an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance their audio experience without breaking the bank.
Pros:
Price: The THX-365T speakers offer great value for money. Their performance rivals that of more expensive brands, making them a smart choice for budget-conscious audiophiles.
Accessories: They come with all the necessary accessories, ensuring a hassle-free setup.
Design and Build: The speakers boast a sleek design and robust build quality, blending seamlessly with most home theater setups.
Clarity and Wide Soundstage: One of the most impressive aspects is their ability to deliver clear sound with a wide soundstage. This feature immerses you in a rich audio environment, perfect for movies and music alike.
Detailed Highs and Mids: These speakers excel in reproducing detailed highs and mids, making them ideal for listening to a wide range of audio content.
Cons:
Atmos Speakers Performance: In my setup with 12 - 15 ft ceilings and existing in-ceiling speakers, the Atmos functionality of the THX-365T didn't make a significant difference. However, this could be due to my specific setup.
Better Suited for Lower, Non-Vaulted Ceilings: While these speakers are impressive, those with high or vaulted ceilings, like mine, might not experience the full potential of the Atmos effect. I believe they would be more effective in environments with lower, non-vaulted ceilings.
Conclusion:
The Monolith by Monoprice THX-365T THX speakers are a solid choice for anyone looking to upgrade their home audio system on a budget. While the Atmos feature may not stand out in setups with high ceilings, the overall sound quality, build, and design make these speakers a worthwhile investment. For those with standard ceiling heights, these speakers could be a game-changer. I definitely recommend adding the THX-365T to your list of budget-friendly, high-quality THX speakers.

Incredible deal.
Amazing speaker for the price, get it on sale for close to half off and never look back. Laid-back but detailed sound, plays very loud with no distortion.

Just what I needed!
They are working in perfect cohesion together as my 7 bed layer speakers. Great speakers that take to room correction well. Now I need to buy 5 speakers to complete the height channels for Atmos and Auro 3D. Probably going with the 265b for them. Yes there are bouncy house speakers in booth for Atmos effects in the 365t. But a true dedicated speaker in the proper location will never be beat for proper sonic reproduction by a speaker that is trying to bounce that sound up there. The 365t are high in value in my book, and THX certified to boot.

Superb addition to my system
I was looking for some atmos height speakers but wasn?t happy with the look when I found these. Most important to me is that the sound quality is superb both with music and movies. It?s also a good looking speaker that?s not too intrusive visually. Works very well with my Pioneer Elite VSX-LX105 receiver. Delivers some nice height effects. This speaker does drop off at 80Hz, but that?s not a problem since I have a very good sub.
All in all, An excellent value considering the sound quality. Highly recommend.

Happy Purchase
The atmos is more than I was expecting. Was honestly not planning on using it but it's actually pretty cool. Given that, it's a phenomenal deal. These sound good and look good. Glad I spent $500 on these great speakers and not $1000 on other, not sure what I would be getting more.

THX + DOLBY ATMOS = A GREAT SPEAKER!
Very impressed thus far. Very well packaged. Fit and finish is nice. Sound quality is very good. These are being used for home theater only so I can only comment on movie watching. Very immersive experience, especially with the built in Dolby Atmos drivers. Highly recommended.
