I think it would work OK for the purpose. It has brown mechanical switches, which don't have an audible sound in and of themselves, but the clack at the end is a little louder than other mechanical keyboards i own. Brown switches are a good mix between typing comfort but still being suitable for gaming. Typically, gaming users like short linear travel such as red switches. This is a good in-between. Dirt and dust show up pretty bad on the white. If i could have gotten it in another color i would have. Keycap fit is moderate to poor. All the keys wiggle a bit, but not as bad it could be. I think that this is good for the price. Hind sight 20-20, i prefer a full size keyboard. I miss the numpad.

I'd say yes. I mean, if you are a Tier 1 Pro-level gamer, you might want to spend a little more. But in general I find the brown switch to be a good middle-ground. I have 3 of these and use them for everything. No issues at all.

I don't use it for high response gaming like MMO's but I've found it more than suitable, nay preferable, for games like No Man's Sky, Elite Dangerous, or other games where keyboard usage is sparse and non-continual.

I have no idea, really. I just use it for typing, and it's working fine. It's a little heavier than many keyboards like it, but it's not a problem for me. It has a light touch, but it's OK for my needs.

It’s about 62” to the start to the USB connector (or 64” to the end of the connector).

What does the "W" LED stand for? The left "A" one is Caps, the middle arrow one is scroll, but there's no numpad or number lock key, so I'm confused what the 3rd LED is for.

I noticed that the PCB supports LEDs for each of the switches - if I solder LEDs on myself, will backlight functionality work?
Not A
on Dec 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi, we had a version of this keyboard with a backlight, product # 33542 that used the same PCB for economies of scale in manufacturing.
However we have not tested adding LEDs to the non-LED version, and also the backlit version had extra keyboard function controls to control the backlighting that the non-LED version does not have. Based on this, just soldering LED's in might not provide backlight functionality. It's probably better to get a keyboard with the function built-in from the factory.

Two thumbs way up!
Great value. My main reason for purchasing was the programmable hardware macro keys. You get 5 of them, which was planty for me. Macro programs are stored onboard the keyboard hardware, so no reliance on software. IMO, Monoprice should advertise this feature more in the product description.
I am able to use a macro key to logon to my Windows box before Windows is even up. I security risk, yes. But worth it to me. My job requires me to enter logon crendentials throughout the workday, and this feature saves me a bunch of time.
Besides that, a great keyboard. As others have noted, solid contruction. Tenkeyless size enables me to use the keyboard while perfectly perched atop my laptop. (I hate laptop keyboards. Doing this with a full size keyboard results in the keyboard being "offset" to the left of the laptop display.)
I just purchased a second for home.

Great value with minor anoyyance YMMV
I imagine if you are buying this you should know the basics of a mechanical keyboard -
- they are loud
- they are tactile
- the travel range is high
- they are heavy
With that said, I've been using mechanical keyboards for the last 10 years, mostly on variants of cherry (black, blue, red), this is my first time trying a non-cherry product and also a brown siwtch keyboard.
Pro:
- Good quality, heavy to the touch, braided nylon usb cable with stress protectors - looks like this thing should be pretty heavy duty and last a long time
- Most keys feel great, very tactile
- The Fn key is on the right hand side of the keyboard so you do not accidentally press them. The macro keys are great for storing commonly used command line (git push, git pull, git fetch, ssh etc for me) even when you are not gaming
The bad:
- The space key, the enter key feels wobbly (see video for details). basically, any key that has a metal bracket - for some reason, the tactile response of these keys are very different - i pulled off my space key and found the spacers underneath the keys are not held in place tight enough.
- YMMV
Overall I recommend this keyboard. But make sure you check for defects.

The negatives overwhelm the positives
I wanted a white keyboard for use in a dim lighting situation. There are limited choices in this style and my favorite wireless one is no longer available. Sadly, this keyboard is less usable than a black one in my use case.
First impression out of the box was how heavy the keyboard was. Not even the huge old Microsoft “Ergonomic” keyboards weigh as much as this thing. It’s a minus for me because I use this on my lap and putting it away on the shelf has become a two hand operation (I’m an old person). It ought to stay put on the deck of a rolling yacht.
Typing is very clicky with a fairly long key travel but is very positive. The keys don’t need to bottom out on to record the keystroke so it is possible to type more quietly if you have a delicate touch.
The horizontal key spacing is slightly closer together than typical keyboards – about -6 mm from the 1 to the 0 keys and enough to be irritating if you touch type and routinely use multiple keyboards.
The key caps have a sharper edge feel which makes the keyboard seem mildly unfriendly and the key caps wobble slightly.
The thing I like least are the character labels on the key caps. They are small, appear grey not black, and are stylized with gaps in many of the letters and number. For example, the number 8 looks like an “H”. The labels for the shift function of a key are so small as to be illegible in my low light situation. The labels are actually translucent, not painted, but the stylization makes them appear to be worn printed labels. Monoprice has a nearly identical version of this keyboard with a backlight which would likely be considerably more usable in dim light.
As others have noted, the height of this keyboard is about twice that of typical low-profile keyboards and the stand-off gap between the key caps and the deck gives it an unfinished appearance. If you use a palm rest, it might not be tall enough.

Response from Monoprice
Hi, thanks for giving this keyboard a try and for taking the time to write the review. Sorry to hear it did not fit your preferences, I just want to address some of the things you didn't like. The weight of the keyboard was somewhat intentional to give it stability when used on a desk, and also a result of mounting the switches on a steel plate to give the keyboard extra rigidity. The font used for the keycap legends are actually clean plain ones but the double-shot process prevents the use of fully enclosed shapes in the characters. This is why some characters have the stenciled look, it was a trade-off to get the more durable legends. The horizontal spacing is fairly standard compared to a lot of keyboards we tested, but it is possible that your other keyboards might have different spacing especially if they were ergonomic. About the extra height, these mechanical keyboards use standard switches and are indeed taller compared to membrane or low-profile mechanical switch keyboards.

Great keyboard for the price
I've been thinking long and hard about trying out mechanical keyboards. After some searches and watching youtube videos I read that outemu switches were well received and even some hardcore players preferred the outemu over the cherry mx's.
Shipping was quick to LA, 2 days.
I've been using it for almost a week and I love it. It's tactile and feels great typing.
The only downside for me, though this doesn't seem to bother some of my coworkers who also have mechanical keyboards, is that the keyboard is raised up higher then my old keyboard. For me that caused a bit of discomfort and had to go and get wrist support. This keyboard is a great buy for me and am happy with the purchase.

The difference in height could take some getting used to.
