Does it support 5.1 sound in and out?

BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure. I have only used this to go from a digital music server into a distribution system, so have only used it for stereo applications

What audio formats does this unit support? Does it support 44.1 16bit? 48 - 24bit? 44.1 24 bit? 96 - 24 bit? There are no published specifications for what PCM audio bitrates this unit supports?

The unit is a signal format converter, Digital Coax and TOSLINK are pretty much interchangeable based on today's requirements. This unit allows you to simple convert the transmission medium, it will not alter or manage the incoming or outgoing PCM or Bitrate signal.

I ordered this, but actually need the optical in to coax out converter. I'm wondering if they are the same product, meaning will the sound travel either way?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The signal will only transmit in one direction. The converters will indicate which port is for input and which port is for output.
The Digital Coaxial (RCA) will be the input and the S/PDIF (Toslink) will be the output on PID 2947.

Will this work in reverse? Can I split the optical audio, one branch to the sound bar, the other converted to RCA audio for head phones?

BEST ANSWER: I am pretty sure that does not work in reverse. Monoprice has a converter that takes optical in and coaxial out for about the same price ($13.34). It is their product #2948. Mine is #2947.

Has lasted a very long time.
I bought this many years ago and it has worked perfectly ever since I connected it. I ran out of coax inputs on my pre-pro so I just converted the coax from my DVR to optical and I?m good to go.

DirecTV and Sonos
Works as intended. Passes through Dolby Digital 5.1 from my DirecTV Genie Mini (Coax - RCA -- remember to activate Dolby Digital in your receiver settings) to a Toslink Input Switcher to a Sonos Playbar.
