The speaker box is MDF and the black paint is thick and opaque. Wood or plastic, these sound great for the price point and would definitely work in surround system just fine. Don’t expect the sound to blow you away but they will get the job done.

It seems to be high quality plastic.. Nice flawless finish.. They sound fine for $50 speakers.. I use them in a four speaker system giving me great coverage and stereo separation in a small room. Go ahead and use them for surround sound. For the price you have nothing to lose.

The enclosure is made of pressboard/particleboard, as far as I can tell, so wood, sort of. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work in a surround sound system, although they are a touch large for actual surround (rear channel) speakers, if you ask me.

How many speakers come with this? Is it only one bookshelf speaker or two?????
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: These come in pairs. I own 2 pairs of these speakers. They are an exceptional speaker for the price. They will not handle high volumes but at low to mid volume they are reproduce sound exceptionally well. The ribbon tweeters are excellent. I pair them with a monoprice subwoofer for my office. Mostly listen to jazz and classical so like the clear and accurate sound reproduction at low volume.

I use this model of speaker with a 25 watt tube amp, so my guess is your Lepai, if it is the 20 watt version, would work fine. Should produce more than adequate volume for a small space.

Depends on the output wattage. Note these are rated at a nominal 6 Ohms, so on the low side for some amps. Practically, they'll work, but will stress some amps at higher volume. GL

Technically any speaker can serve as an Atmos speaker. If you are getting that serious into home theater, I wouldn’t buy these. I’ve got a pair for my garage that sound okay, but I think these are too big for mounting on the wall. I’d spend a little more on other (better and smaller) monoprice speakers.

what kind of crossover do these speakers have?
A shopper
on Oct 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I removed the speakers and hotglued on the woofer back frame is a 100 volt, 2 microfarad electrolytic capacitor made by SPT. It is wired on the positive side of the speaker wired in series between the input terminal cup and the positive speaker terminal. There are no identifiable markings on either the woofer or tweeter. 2 microfarads is very close to 5000 hertz crossover point. I just wonder how much a difference a true two-way crossover would make but two 2nd order crossover boards would cost close to the price paid for the speakers. Some bloggers on some of the forums say that the capacitor is very adequate as a crossover on ribbon tweeters.

I have the Dayton B652 air speakers, they have 6.8uF cap, series 3 ohm resistor for ribbon tweeter that makes vinyl crackles sound like what is heard when a phone line crackled on a rotary phone. The cap IMO could be reduced to 3.3uF and add a 0.45mH coil to the woofer

What speakers would you recommend for this amplifier? I am looking for a good pair of bookshelf speakers for it. I like the look of the 4” retro bookshelf speakers but I think I could use larger speakers to get the most out of this amp. Monoprice Affinity Premium 14AWG Braided Speaker Wire with Gold Plated Banana Plug Connectors, 10ft (Open Box)
BEST ANSWER: I would go with the MP-65RT as it has a full size woofer for a bookshelf (6.5") and the ribbon tweeter makes the highs clear without being too bright. I bought these bookshelves to replace some expensive ones in the living room as we were getting a puppy. Lucky so far he hasn't chewed them and I'm quite surprised how well they work in an open concept living room (Large space) You can buy plain speaker wire and separate banana plugs (just a pair for the amp) which may be cheaper in the long run as you can run any length of speaker wire rather than be limited to 10 ft which isn't a lot depending on the size of your room and where you place the amp and speakers.

As long as you are not looking for big volume, and I assume you are not, the 65RTs would work fine. As for a sub, I would stay small, with an 8" model such as this one: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8248. Only problem is it is out of stock right now.

Monoprice MP-65RT 6.5in and Ribbon Tweeter 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair), Black

Monoprice Low Profile 7.5 lb. Capacity Speaker Wall Mount Brackets (Pair), Black
BEST ANSWER: There is no standard mounting mp-65rt. You must either be willing to drill into the speaker cabinet or choose clamp-style mounting. Given the low price, I chose to drill. The rear panel of the cabinet is plenty strong and thick enough to support the speakers with 2+ wood screws.
I personally wouldn't choose a low-profile mount unless i was mounting them perfectly straight and level; because the speakers are large, a low-profile mount will severely limit the ability to aim them. A mount with more distance from the wall will allow the speaker to tilt a bit.
A love the sound quality, but these ribbons are more sensitive to sub-optimal listening positions. Point them toward the listening position and they are fantastic.

David C
on Jun 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It depends on what you want the maximum volume to be.
You could make them work with 100 watts for short periods with no noticable distortion). However, I suspect my normal, loudish music volume is only about 10-20 watts per channel.
That said, they seem efficient and seem to play loud and clear with minimal wattage; these are not power hungry speakers. But, they are 6ohm, so make sure you use low gauge speaker wire, especially on longer runs.

I used them first with a 5 watt per channel solid state amp with good results. They also performed well (at lower volumes) with a 1 watt SET tube amp. Probably best for smaller spaces overall. Clear highs and well defined bass, and somewhat bright balance. YMMV, but I would not try to fill a large room with a single pair.

With speakers there is no real minimum wattage. There is RMS which is the best wattage to run them at then there is the maximum it will take, which will decrease their lifespan.

I purchase both Monoprice MP-65RT, MP-C65RT. Which Subwoofer crossover hz would best suit these speakers? 80hz, 100hz? 120hz?
Thanks so much, I love these speakers!

Monoprice MP-C65RT Center Channel Speaker with Ribbon Tweeter
BEST ANSWER: When it comes to subs the more the merrier, in this case taking into consideration the size and if you are not that into loudness hit the one in the middle, 100hz should be good enough for a small space. I use them for audio production; 2 thumbs up ;

I use the 80hz setting as it seems to be the smoothest transition and gives the most natural sound to my 5.1 surround system. Since systems are different in scope, I would suggest you also try the 100hz setting also, then select the one that sounds best to you. I think the 120hz is probably too high for these great speakers.

How would these to klipsch R-41M which are 90 a pair?

BEST ANSWER: They won’t compare very favorably. But then again comparing anything to something that costs twice as much is going to not end well for the cheaper option. These speakers are good value for the price, I have them hooked up in my home office to a monoprice tube amp and use them to play vinyl. They aren’t worth twice as much however.

Can be used on dell laptops?
A shopper
on Nov 22, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You will need an amplifier with Bluetooth to stream from your Dell laptop. These require an amplifier. Monoprice has some great tube stereo amplifiers. Conversely Monoprice has some great desktop powered speakers that can accept wired inputs or Bluetooth or both. Either recommendation works and I think you’ll be happy with either.

They are not powered speakers, so you'd have to run audio out of the laptop to an amplifier first

With a little tuning, a nice step up from Eris monitors
I chose these because planar tweeters would likely yield better performance in this price range than other designs. They have turned out to be better than I imagined.
Running them from a spare amp I had sitting around (Pioneer VSX-305), at first I was a little disappointed by weak lower frequencies - but turning on the amp's bass boost function solved that (a little too well). Turning the bass knob down about 10% helped even things out. (Sorry this was vague; I can't find any details about the frequencies affected.) After tweaking a few bands -1/-2 dB in a software EQ, I think these now sound at least as balanced as the Eris 3.5" monitors I was replacing.
These planar tweeters really shine on string instruments, high percussion, and woodwinds. As a musician and a bass player, I was also looking for stereo imaging at lower frequencies than most people seem to care about, and am most satisfied! Note that these might be prone to distortion if played above moderate levels.

Very functional when your expectations are controlled
This was an experiment...buy the least expensive bookshelf speakers, pair it with an inexpensive Class D amp with 2.1 capability and let it rip !
I have less than a hundred dollars in the whole rig and it sounds great. I would not be embarrassed to let anyone listen to it. Due to the fact that I put together my systems on a self-imposed low budget to listen to music, not review, not techno-disect or to put anyone through the paralysis of analysis. If it sounds good to me then it is good. While I wasn't expecting a lot, i was pleased with the clarity of the tweeter and using these with a small passive sub the system is more than adequate. I don't imagine I will use these without a sub as the low end is not strong but worth the $ for my configuration.

These sound much better than the B652 air. Don't even think about it, just get them. You won't be sorry. At $65 a pair I would give them a 10 star.

Get what you paid for.
Purchased these speakers about a year ago. Didn?t expect much, just want them for the surround chanel. I didn?t really understand the effect they have because the low sensitivity and 6 ohms. I thought my 15 years old av receiver finally loosing the power. Hook up my old 30 yrs old Boston Acoustic A40 back and everything is normal again.
The speakers look good, sound ok with a sub. I put them in my wife work room. She doesn?t know that I swap them out with BA.
