Does this get enough power through the USB Bus to operate 4 devices simultaneously, such as flash drives or external hard drives, or would the PID: 21671 be better suited for that?

USB 3.0 spec states that upto 900 mA per port may be consumed. So for a truly compliant USB 3.0 hub, need as a minimum 4*900 = 3.6A power supply. Since the supplied adapter is rated @ 2A, no this hub is not fully compliant. If your downstream ports are consuming lower current than this 900 mA then you may be ok but is like playing roulette.

I'm running it through my laptop and have a cordless keyboard, a cordless mouse and a printer all plugged into the hub, with one hub left I used to plug in a flash drive to download some files I had. Haven't experienced any lack of power or drain at all.

Can this be used as a stand alone charging station?

BEST ANSWER: Good question and hadn't thought about that option. I unplugged it from my PC and plugged in two phones and my phone iPad and all three showed charging off the wall adapter. So it will work for at least three devices.

Yes, with AC Adapter but the amperage will be less than with the standard chargers provided with your devices if you connect more than 2 devices assuming your electronics are recently purchased.

Monoprice USB 3.0 4-port Aluminum Hub
BEST ANSWER: Yep - I've got a few external SSD's attached to this to access various files that I don't store on my computer or in the cloud, and save Time Machine Back-Ups on them. Transfer speeds are slow though if you're moving a lot of data.

I have 2 Hdd running in a software RAID1. I use these for backups so they run for a very long time. The hub I currently use doesn't seem to be able to handle more than a few mb/s. Does anyone have experience with the transfer speeds of this hub for large files?

BEST ANSWER: I transferred about 200 GB of data through this the other day. Was running between 35-40 MB/s. Have another hub (neither have a power adapter) that both ran between 325-375 MB/s, same to SSD plugged directly into laptop.

USB hub
Purchased the USB hub to expand the ports on my Mac Mini. Perfect for the job and would recommend the product and purchasing from Monoprice. In my opinion, the quality is better and the price is lower than what I would have purchased at a retail store. Delivery was timely and I was kept up to date on the progress of my package. I will definitely use Monoprice again.

Works, good looking, seems solid. And comes with an AC adapter, so can be used as a (low powered) charging station.

Powered hubs are always welcome to me
I needed an externally powered hub like this one because I run a drawing tablet(two USB outlets for power and data) and a USB SSD(also power hungry) and I was always running into random-rebooting issues.
And now with THIS powered hub I can even run a USB keypad as well and not have to worry about power issues damaging my laptop anymore

Works well, may e a tricky attaching to an iPad.
It is a bit tricky to get my iPad with the camera adapter usb dongle to accept the device. Apple suggests a power down, found the hub needs to be connected first without power and after it recognizes the dongle I plug it in. to know that it recognizes the dongle, I first plug in the usb light and wait for it to power on, the I attach the hub. I think this an Apple feature and not limited to this hub. Once it connects works great, sees my midi and mixer with good response. No issues on my pc.

No issues - external powered
If you need more USB 3.0 ports for items that need the full 500mA power to the device, then this externally powered 4-port hub is the thing for you! It comes with a 5V 2A wall wart.
