I have a Monoprice gigabit switch but need a few POE ports to power touch screens. Ports 1-4 on this switch are POE and port 5 is not. Do I connect my non powered Ethernet cable from my 24 port switch to port 5 allowing the remaining ports to be powered?
john m
on Jan 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that would make the connection between the non POE switch to the new POE switch. The ports on the POE switch get the power from the power cord on the new switch.

Yeah, best to plug the incoming connection into the non-powered port. Otherwise you have wasted a POE port you could otherwise use for your devices. Also, if you were using multiple POE switches, I can imagine you would have some bad problems plugging powered ports into powered ports.

That's how it's done. The power supply makes ports 1-4 POE and port 5 goes back to the router.. If you have unused ports on the switch they can be used for non-POE devices or POE, as needed.

Yes, in my home, I connected 4 POE cameras to the 4 powered ports and then ran the 5th line to my home network switch. My NVR is on that network and it recognized the cameras right away

Yes, that would be the best configuration. That way you can connect either POE or standard connections in the remaining ports.

Can I use this to power TL-WA801ND?

BEST ANSWER: My mistake I just read about unit , it has POE capability . just match up
1- TL-WA801ND POE requirement with a POE switch of injector ( Best to get POE Injector / Switch recommended by manufacture )
So to answer your question I would avoid mix and match product lines .

I have no experience with your particular application but most POE devices I have worked with are 24w and this switch supports up to 30w per port so you should be fine.

Probably not. Unit comes with passive power injector which is either 12 or 24vdc. This switch is POE/802.3af/at which is 48 & 54V

Can this be mounted in an attic, where temps can be extreme?
Brit A
on Mar 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't know at what temperature that you consider extreme. For the price I would consider installing it to see how long it lasts. Have used other vendors tough Switches where temp rated at 130-140 degrees. You are also looking at a couple of hundred dollars for cost.

This is not a "hardened" switch. I do not recommend attic mounting. You'll pay A LOT more for a switch that is made for extreme temps.

BEST ANSWER: Hello
I am not familiar with the product that you are using. If your cams and light use the POE protocol than you need to add the power consumption that is required to power all three at the same time. If the Switch has more power than you can use it but if it is less than it wont work. Find the power of the switch and compare it to the cams plus the light. I hope this can help you.

Any of these would be suitable for use with a PoE switch as long as they are not the ultra slim cables but I would recommend using the Cat 6A cables for PoE.

Is the mounting bracket removable?
George D

BEST ANSWER: No, it is part of the case. However, it is thin metal, so with only a modest amount of work, it could be removed. With pliers, you could fold it back and forth to remove, or a grinder would make short work of it.

This is Old 10/100 not gig- really? (ok for some but not universal)
Just know that while this is fine for poe cams, printers, etc- almost everyone w cable internet has internet faster than this so DO NOT put your PC on this (unless you have old DSL or really low speed 'other internet' - so know what you are doing and know to only use this where it is appropriate (i.e.. if you already have a gig router with ports or higher speed wifi 5/6 for pc's and just want your slower PoE defices on this)
