Can the desk top get in the way of the crank?

BEST ANSWER: It can if you screw it in too far back from the edge of the desktop. If it's installed nearly flush with the desktop you'll be ok.

Not if it's mounted properly. The crank's length is adjustable. I actually did not mount the crank to the desk top since it is a piece of glass. I keep the crank nearby and just insert it, when desired, to raise or lower the desk.

After assembling the frame, you will need to install the desk top surface prior to installing the crank. Thus you will have control over the location of the crank and can plan for the clearance required.

Yes, it must be positioned carefully. It slides out a little to avoid the top, but if you put on a very deep top you may have trouble.

Only with a bit of elbow grease since they are not made for wheels in mind. Also not related to your question but a freely moving standing desk is a safety hazard, imagine losing your balance and using the desk as support... but you probably anticipated that already and have in mind lockable wheels. My desk is in another location so I can't be sure, but I would get castor wheels and drill the mounts right through the feet, which are metal. An alternative but easier method is to attach the wheels to 2 suitable lengths of wood as wide as the legs, rest the legs on the wood and just zip tie/secure them together. Fast and easy.

Anything is possible with enough time and money. You would need to attach a piece of plywood to the bottom of the legs, then attach the castors (plate style) to the plywood.

It is possible if you don't mind drilling holes in the legs. The frame is not set up for wheels. I think that the frame would be a bit unstable if you added wheels.

How deep can the tabletop be to not interfere with the manual crank? It says how wide of a tabletop it can accommodate, but not the depth.

Not that can be purchased complete. Even then I wouldn't recommend doing that. Keep in mind all the cords that have to reach back to various peripherals on the desktop. You will likely need extra long monitor cables etc. The cross bar underneath would likely be strong enough to hold a PC and keep distances a constant with a power strip attached as well. This only makes sense if your PC is on the smaller and lighter side. Does all of this weigh less then the manufacturer's total weight recommendation?

That was the goal of putting it on the legs and not the crossbar, I didn't want to exceed the weight limit. Cable length isn't an issue. I can go as high as I need to with the PCs on the floor, but I'd rather get them off the floor

how far in front of the frame does the handcrank sit? I want a desk that is 4 feet deep, and I'm worried the handcrank will intersect with the table top when turned
A shopper
on Oct 16, 2023
BEST ANSWER: This frame will not work with a desk top that is 4 feet deep. The top of the frame is 22.4" deep, and the crank extends maybe 4 inches past the end of the frame. If you center the desk top on the frame, that gives you something like 30 inches as the deepest desk top this frame could handle. Maybe a motorized frame with no crank would work? Consider also that the weight rating of the frame includes the desk top itself and it sounds like you will have a very substantial desk top at 4 feet deep.

I have an IKEA Galant Desk. Would I be able to use this desktop and install it on to this frame? Do you have general instructions for adapting any desktop to this frame?
Andrew K
on Jul 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi, yes your existing desktop should work with this frame, as long as the dimensions fit. According to the Ikea website, the Galant desktop is made of particle board (unlike their lower end desktop models that have a paper core) so you should be able to mount this properly. One thing to check is the desktop thickness because the included screws are 3/4" long, if the top is too thin you might need to get washers to make sure the screws don't go through the top. The included screws are self-drilling, but installation would be easier if you pre-drill using a small bit (around 1/16" would work). Instructions for mounting a top would be included, but generally an easy way to do it is to lay the desktop upside-down on carpet, place and adjust the upper desk frame to your desired position and length on the desktop, and pre-drill. You can screw the top at this time or wait until the table is assembled and upright. If you encounter issues with your existing top, you can also check out products 21601 to 21606 for desktop options. Thank you.

For best results, tops that go as deep as the feet would work best so you can position flush to a wall or next to another piece of furniture. Hope this helps.

BEST ANSWER: Hi, the desk frame width is adjustable but only maxes at 67" wide by 23.6 deep, which will probably result in too much unsupported overhang with the table top size you want. you can check towards the middle of the product page to see a diagram with desk measurements labeled. Unfortunately there is no easy way to connect two of these together while maintaining the height adjustable feature of the desk so this will not work out of the box.

Looking at the dimensions, the depth is 27.5 inches. That seems pretty deep. I'd like to have something closer to 25 inches. Can that be done with this desk?

I want to use a butcher block countertop (anywhere from 90-110 lbs) as the table top but I'm concerned about the weight. Will there be any harm using this frame to support weights of around 140 lbs (butcher block + monitor arm + 2 monitors + other small accessories)? What about when the desk is completely lowered and not raised up?
New User U
on Aug 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi, this desk frame is spec'd for 138 lbs. Although 140 lbs would probably work, it is at the limit and could cause issues for long term durability once you have objects on the desk. The weight spec is mostly to ensure long term durability and stability, the main parts affected would be the moving parts and gears. If completely lowered, the desk could support higher static weight loads so the butcher block shouldn't be an issue. However if you intend on holding a higher position or if you intend on changing desk heights, a dual motor electric desk would be better. Thanks for checking.

Can I buy 2 of these frames, and put 2 different sized tabletop, PN 21603 and PN 21601, to form an L shaped desk?

Monoprice Sit-Stand Height Adjustable Table Desk Frame Workstation, Manual Crank

Monoprice Table Top for Sit-Stand Height-Adjustable Desk, 4ft Black, Compatible with Electric Desks

Monoprice Table Top for Sit-Stand Height-Adjustable Desk, 5ft Black, Compatible with Electric Desks
BEST ANSWER: Hi, if you are building an L-shaped desk with two frames, it might be best to keep the desks separate and just butted right next to each other, unless you are OK with adjusting the two frames at the same time to avoid causing weird stresses to the desk that could result in instability or reduced durability.

Monoprice Sit-Stand Height Adjustable Table Desk Frame Workstation, Manual Crank

Monoprice Table Top for Sit-Stand Height-Adjustable Desk, 5ft Black, Compatible with Electric Desks
BEST ANSWER: Hi, the 30909 4ft desktop could work, you will just need to position it yourself since the pre-drilled holes are different.
We are still trying to get more of the other desk tops back, but that size would not be available until at least later this year.

Can you half crank, remove crank , re-insert and repeat? I"m looking at a 60x30 top and that leavers me with ~2.75 overhang on front and back. If i can't crank halfway this could cause an issue.

BEST ANSWER: Hi, that is possible because the handle is designed to be attached and be removed easily. You can check the manual linked on the product page to see how it attaches. This might be OK if you just need to set the perfect height initially and intend to make infrequent adjustments.
But if you intend on adjusting the desk height regularly, that method of adjusting the desk could be very cumbersome. You might be better off considering a motorized desk instead, such as Product 35377 or 31290 if trying to stay within budget. Thanks for checking.

Are the legs easily removed/disassembled for moving?
New User U
on Sep 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi, the bolts for just the legs are not accessible if you only want to remove the legs for this model. You first need to remove the top but leave that attached to the support bars (4 bolts plus 2 middle screws to the top), and then remove the legs. Don't forget to remove the connecting rod as well. It should still be easy enough though.

Great for a DIY standing desk
I placed an unused flat door on it and cut it down to 35" x 70" and it works great, no complaints!

Yes.
Exactly what I was expecting in the GOOD way.
Pros:
1. See comments 'why did you choose this' from 12/20/22; the product I received was what was advertised & 100% fulfilled my choices/expectations.
2. Shipping exceeded my expectations. I expected to receive this in 5-7 business days - it took 2. The week before Christmas. Amazing.
Cons:
1. There was a minor but noticeable scratch in the finish. Fortunately it was on the crossbar so, the underside & aesthetically is a nonissue.
2. One adjustable base pad was missing - I plan to add castors (thank you to the Q&A commenter who indicated 10mm stem size) so I haven't pursued reaching customer service or anything.
To note - locking stem castors can absolutely be screwed into the bottom of this frame, no drilling or constructing a base frame required. Obviously 'locking' said castors prohibits movement, eliminates movement/stability issues.

Great value in a standing adjustable desk.
I have an earlier version of this from Monoprice and I love it. It was a no brainer to order this one.

High quality, looks good too.
Sturdy, smooth mechanics. I was able to mount my IKEA desktop with no issues. I would recommend it! I assembled it in about 90 minutes. Some of the instructions were unclear, but I figured it out.

So far so good.
I bought this because working from home for the past two years has done a number on my back. I've had this setup about a week and its helped. Not a magic cure all but definitely has already helped. I picked this once because the weight it can support is pretty impressive and that was a concern because the monitor my work gave me (HP z38c) weighs way more than it should. I tried monitor risers but they couldn't support the weight of it and if they said they did it was shaky and I didn't trust it. My old desk was two counter tops i got from IKEA years ago to make an L shaped desk. I converted the smaller of the two into my sit stand. To give reference the left monitory is 27" and the left is 38". To those on the fence I wish I would have done this sooner.

sturdy and smooth
Went with manual crank, don't want to get into a situation years from now when electric motor goes and who knows if you can get a replacement by then? very sturdy frame and easy to put together, didn't use any of the included screws as i put together with a monoprice top.
