I cannot get this device to connect. Does anyone have any more detailed instructions on how to setup?

BEST ANSWER: Just paired this unit yesterday. Had some difficulty getting my Smartthings Hub to recognize it. Finally separated the Hub and unit by about 1 meter and it paired. Keep pushing the program button after about 5 to 10 seconds. The unit sends an identification signal only for a short time. Good Luck

With new smartthings application (that uses Samsung login), the interface is clunky. It may keep saying "searching" but if you hit back button, it would have already added it in the network. The blinking light on ST hub is also indication that it added new device successfully.

What is the battery life of this unit? In addition to motion and temperature, does this unit share the battery state with the controller?
George W
on Dec 19, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I can see battery capacity being reported. I haven't had this unit for long, so it's hard to tell how long battery will last. So far, I've had it for about two months, and battery reports as 100% (in my experience, these devices report battery status in "chunks" -- I expect it to suddenly drop from 100% to 80% or so, eventually). Note that temperature reporting is so so -- The unit appears to "sleep" to conserve battery and only wakes up once every X minutes to update the temperature measurements (but don't worry, motion detection is always instant).

Yes battery capacity is reported. Can be seen for instance by Smartthings. Battery life will be like other battery powered devices - i.e. your mileage may vary. Depends on how active the location is, how far away it resides from the hub or other z-wave devices, etc. As with other responses, has only been in use for about a month, but still shows 100%.

So far I've had 2 units in very busy locations and the battery has held at 100% for 2 months. The temperature is shared with the controller. A word of caution if you have large windows or forced hot air heating close to the unit, it will be affected by the temperature swings.

I'm using with Smartthings, and yes - battery state is communicated to the controller. It seems like you lose about 8% of the battery life per month, so plan on replacing it each year. Beware, some units are shipping with about 70% battery life out-of-the-box.

Does this sensor provide continuous motion detection or (to conserve on battery power) does it have a delay after a motion detection event is registered before it will register motion detection again?
A shopper
on Nov 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It doesn't register continuously but it does activate immediately when it senses motion (on state). The unit will then look for motion again 60 seconds later. If there is still motion it will stay in the "on state" and will then check again in 60 seconds. If there is no motion during this check then it sends the "off state". It then waits until is sees motion and then starts the process over.

Yes, in the instructions it says it does have a delay. I think it's 4 minutes and adjustable somehow?? I bought this to work with the Wink 2 hub. It connects as a generic sensor. It shows the temp sensor status but it doesn't recognize the motion. The motion sensor's light flashes when motion is detected but the Wink does show show there was motion.

How do you change the temperature from C to F?
Jason G.
on Dec 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The MonoPrice 15271 Z-Wave Plus PIR Motion/Temp sensor reports changes of +-2 degrees C, by default. This can be changed to Fahrenheit by sending a Z-Wave Command_Class_Configuration command. It's documented on pages 5-6 of the included manual. BEST ANSWER: Keith -
You weren't using a SmartThings hub before so I don't believe you need to do a "reset" or an "exclude" since your SmartThings hub has never seen it.
No promises, but this is what I would do:
1 Take the sensor out of it's holder and take it close (3 feet or so) to your SmartThings hub.
2. Open the back cover of the the sensor and find the "program" button.
3. Start your SmartThings app on your phone/iPad/etc. and go to the screen where you can add a device, but don't click on add a device yet.
4. Press and hold the "program" button from step 2 for 1 second then release. The LED on the sensor should start blinking. This means it's in pairing mode.
5. Now click on the "Add a device" or "+" button on your SmartThings app.
If the LED on the sensor goes solid that means it paired and your SmartThings app should be showing the device.
If it doesn't, try a couple variations on holding/releasing the program button. Some people have had to hold it for a second, release it, then hold for another second and release.
Regards,
David

To the best of my knowledge all you have to do is connect the motion detector to the SmartThings Hub using the app. No reset of the sensor should be necessary. If the app doesn't discover the sensor automatically use the manual choice and select a sensor from the options given. You might have to keep picking a different brand until it indicates you are connected.

Could I use this inside a freezer to make sure it's working?
A shopper
on Oct 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Remember it is a wireless device. The moment you close the frieezer you will have four metal walls around the sensor, a perfect cage of Faraday that will not allow signals to go through. Your freezer may have a plastic top. For the price I would then give it a try.
Since you only care to know if the freezer is working or not, you will then not experience the major flaw, assuming it works, which is that it comes with a resolution of 2°C (1.8°F). You will see the temperature going from -6°C to -4°C to -2°C, too large steps. The manual does not tell you how to change it. The seller does not have the answer either. Yes, you can read in either °C or °F.

Probably not. I have not thought of the application you mention. I would suggest that locating the sensor inside a metal enclosure would greatly hinder its ability to remain connected to a wireless network, not to mention the effects a freezing environment might have on its lifespan.

BEST ANSWER: It's 2-5/16 wide, 3-5/16 high, and 1-7/8 deep at the deepest point. That's 60mm x 84mm x 49mm. There is a separate mounting bracket - a flat piece of white plastic with curved sides - that adds about 2-5mm of depth depending on whether you screw it in or use tape.

I would start from the beginning, and/or perhaps try deleting the device, and resetting the unit by holding in the include/exclude button for 30 seconds or more. Then try again. It worked for me eventually. Also, try Vera support -- it's probably on their side if you're having difficulties.

I have a Vera Edge controller. After setting the controller to "include", use a paperclip to double-tap the sensor's program button (on the back). You should try different delays between the two button presses. The "double tap" worked for me on the first try.

Mark, I have a Smartthings Hub and there is not way at all to adjust the sensitivity in the settings. The option is simply not there at all. I believe the sensitivity will need to be adjusted with jumper pins, but how do you actually do it and where do you buy the jumper pins from?

There are pins inside the unit that you connect to activate pet1 or pet2 sensitivity.

Are there firmware updates for this device? I too notice a delay on occasion for the unit to detect motion. I suspect a firmware update of some kind would take care of this.

what's the polling rate on the motion sensor? I have a GE portable motion sensor that triggers (motion active), and doesn't poll again for 4 minutes (motion stopped) (not configurable through winK), and that is near useless for automation.
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure of the EXACT polling rate but I know it's not 4 minutes between polling. If I walk past the sensor I can see the LED 'light up'. If I walk out of it's field of vision and then walk back into it, the LED lights up again. So it's not an issue.

I tried to pair this with a Wink 2 Hub. It seems to connect, but comes up as a 'generic sensor', and seems to be an entry-type sensor instead of motion detector. The only choices via wink are 'window', 'door', 'cabinet', and 'patio door'. I also bought an entry sensor, so will try to connect that one to see what happens. Any hints appreciated?

I have this set up under one of my eaves on the front porch. It's in a covered corner and maybe 10 feet off the ground, it's pointed right at my front door. 8/10, it will not detect motion, even if I'm jumping up and down. It seems to detect motion best when I'm on end of the porch furthest away from it. Anything closer than 6 feet it doesn't seem to detect. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it a sensitivity issue? Is it too cold outside? It's about 50 degrees F right now so it's not freezing.

Good Motion/Temperature sensors that work with Hubitat.
I bought this to add some additional motion/temperature sensors to my Hubitat environment. Once you get these added to Hubitat they work perfectly.

Third sensor in 4 years. All working as expected.
This is my third Monoprice PIR Motion Detector. The first has been in service for 4 years, the second in service for 2 years. The second is located outside on a covered entry porch. Both Motion Detectors have performed flawlessly. With that history there is no reason to look at any other. I expect this third sensor to perform the same. I definitely recommend this sensor for use with a Smartthings system.

decent motion sensor
have 2 of these running... one is outside under the porch to detect motion and the other is in the unfinished portion of the basement to trigger a light.
Pros.. outstanding battery life.. both are running well over a year on batteries. Easy to mount - has screw mounts or has flat surface to tape.
The temp sensor is fairly close to others that I have in the proximity
Cons.. sometimes motion detection is instant.. other times, it lags for a second or two. Always detects.. just the timing varies.
The re trigger is 3 minutes and in hubitat I have been unable to adjust the parameter to drop it to 1 minute.

Decent Z-wave PIR and Temp sensor
The Monoprice Z-wave Plus PIR motion and temp sensor is a decent combo sensor for DIY smart home automation. Battery life will vary depending on the strength of your z-wave network, and the frequency of motion and temperature sampling.
While other multi-sensors may include luminance, humidity, and other environmental sensors, the additional data points just eat batteries.
A luminance threshold sensor (i.e. light or dark detector) could be useful for lighting automation on gloomy/overcast/rainy days where ambient lighting is normally sufficient during the day.
My biggest criticism for this sensor is that the product photography for the item STILL shows it upsidedown! Do not mount your motion sensor as shown in the product photography because you will only detect motion of very tall people and Spiderman crawling on the ceiling. Hopefully, this review brings this fatal flaw to someone's attention and all of the product photography is revised to show the sensor in its proper orientation.

Best Z-Wave simple motion detector I've used
I've been using Z-Wave for several years and have tried many different motion detectors. This unit has proven, thus far, one of the best for motion detection.
1) Understand that it is a simpler device than most: it only reports 3 things, motion detection, case intrusion and temperature. No light sensor, no relative humidity, etc. To me that is a good thing, might not be to others.
2) Unlike other devices, it is not well-defined in HomeSeer, the software I used for home automation. So to change any of the settings you have to read the manual and determine how to do it in your software. HomeSeer allows this by directly manipulating the device registers by register number, size and data. I wish it were better defined to HomeSeer so the program could present a reasonable menu.
3) Partially due to #2 above, it is harder than most to set the time between motion detection events. The default is 3 minutes, but it can be set with the registers. Unfortunately, the register is in minutes not seconds, so the shortest time is 1 minute. The programming capabilities of HomeSeer make this very workable.
4) When my first two units arrived, there arrived without a manual (or, perhaps, I misplaced it). Since they look very much like some other units I have tried, I ASS-U-MEed that they would enter "add to network" mode the same way. Nope. I wrote Monoprice and they sent a PDF file of the menu and that got the devices working in a few minutes, plus provided the information necessary to program the devices.
5) Battery life. Mine have been in use for almost 3 months now and both still report 100% battery to HomeSeer. They seem to report battery level daily.
6) Temperature reporting is not a "timed event". Temperature is reported only when the temperature changes by 2 degrees. According to the manual, that is adjustable but the adjustment procedure is not defined in the manual, so if might as well not be. This works well for rooms or areas with a lot of fluctuation but not in areas were the temperature is fairly consistent. I wish it would to that but also report temperature at the same time it reports battery level, so at least once per day the temp would be reported.
So, if you're looking for a simple motion detector that might be a little harder to program than other devices, this device will work great.
(Also, please note that, for some reason, Monoprice has posted all of the photos of the device UPSIDE-DOWN. The wide end is at the top, not the bottom, so when placed on a wall the sensor angles downward. This is obvious in the pic with the mounting holes - the small end of the screw slot should be UP not DOWN.)
