What are the serial commands and settings necessary to control this device via RS-232?

BEST ANSWER: Depends on your control system. I found the following worked for me:
Input 1- 1%0d
Input 2- 2%0d
Input 3- 3%0d
Input 4- 4%0d
*-Note don't send the input label, just send X%0d where X is the input number. I also had to crossover pins 2 and 3 on one end of the serial cable, straight through didn't work for me.

I'm new to multi-video recording and I have a question - does the RS232 allow me to plug the USB end into a laptop and use with the software ProPresenter so that I can view each camera from this switcher? And also switch views from the software?? Hope I'm making sense...

Monoprice 3G SDI 4x1 Switch

Monoprice USB to RS-232 DB-9 Male and DB-25 Male Serial Converter Cable
BEST ANSWER: No, the RS232 port is only for controlling the switch. There's no way to view any video over the RS232 port. Video only goes out over the BNC connector labeled "OUT". You can use software to switch the output but I don't see any documentation that suggests ProPresenter knows how to control this device.

When using my current 2 x1 SDI switcher, I get a blue "searching for source" screen on my projectors, which is rather distracting at a live event, as you can probably imagine. Can anyone tell me if there is a brief loss of signal during the video source switching with this device as well, or is it a smooth and consistent switching process?

BEST ANSWER: Like your current switcher, this is more like a "source selector" and all non-synced switches will have the same problem. It is equivalent to unplugging one source and plugging in a different source VERY FAST. For smooth transitions you would need an actual broadcast/live/presentation video switcher or scaler which either buffers or synchronizes the sources so that the output is never actually interrupted, but it will be more expensive.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
Unfortunately we would not make RS-232 software that is made for this switch.
Sorry about any inconvenience this may have caused.

I do not seem to get connectivity. I have some bnc terminal blocks and use a DVM to check continuity and I am reading an open and yes I double checked the switch position. Is something amiss or is this not supposed to work this way?

Good value! Works as advertised.
I got this to switch the video source between video content and a camera feed in a remote room and it works as advertised. I have it connected to a control system and the RS232 commands that are posted in the other reviews are correct.
Notes-
-Works as advertised
-Switching between sources has about a 3 second delay (much better than the 13 seconds I was getting with my HDMI matrix)
-RS232 port works
-Good value!

3G SDI 4x1 Switch
I bought this switch to use with analog cameras. I knew this was an SDI switch but was hoping it would work with analog. This is just a heads up if you are looking at this for this purpose. It does NOT work with analog inputs. I don't really have a negative or positive rating for this item as I knew this might not work.

Yes, it can be remotely controlled
I put this in a multi-camera CCU rack for a test output switcher. Fit nicely in the back of the rack, but of course the front panel was inaccessible. Thanks to TVGuy's review I was able to get the RS232 codes and made a little remote control with 4 lighted pushbuttons using a Basic Stamp microcontroller. The signal dropout when switching between (even genlocked) sources bothers some monitors more than others. I think it is probably a firmware issue in the switcher. Anyway, does the job for a good price.
PROS: Small, cheap, works.
CONS: Signal drops out when switching.

Awesome little switch
Delay between inputs is 1-2secs depending on displays that are attached and resolution differences between inputs.
Works with http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=2067 for usb to rs232 connection.
Wrote a little autoitscript to control it for direct switching to an input, with an auto switching based on window detection, now I can switch between inputs with out touching it or thinking about.
PROS: supports 3g sdi 1080p 60Hz, and rs232 control.
CONS: Not an instant or a production sdi switcher
No rack mount or mounting options of any kind.

Awesome
It works great. It inserts a few frames of black during a switch, but that's to be expected from any switcher in this price range. It only has one button to cycle through inputs it would be better to have 4 buttons. But the RS-232 port solves this problem for me.
The serial commands posted by TVGuy are correct, thank you. When sending serial commands, you need to use a carriage return, rather than line feed.

A great device for switching between 4 different HDSDI feeds, Does the job, simple and straight foward, you won't find anything better at this price.
PROS: Reliable SDI switcher at a great price
CONS: LED lights are pretty bright, but no big deal. Wish there was an 8x1

Purchased this product to use as a remote switch with RS232 control. Unfortunately the RS232 commands were not included and after contacting Monoprice support, no one could locate them. 2 weeks later Monoprice sent them to me. I've knocked off a few points for releasing a product that wasn't properly documented and having to wait 2 weeks to be able to use it.
For reference, here are the connection information and commands:
9600,N,8,1
The Command codes are 1 , 2 , 3 , 4
PROS: Easy to Set up, decently built.
CONS: Does not include RS232 Commnads. 5v Power Supply - Every other piece of SDI equipment I have uses a 12v.
