California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar - White

You know it when you hear it. That distinctive California Classic sound made famous by artists like Dick Dale, David Gilmour, and Ritchie Blackmore. Whether it is the surf, blues, psychedelic rock, country, or classic hard rock, this California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice is the perfect axe for your daily practice and performance needs.

This full-sized, 22-fret guitar features a double-cutaway body made of basswood, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses three single-coil pickups in the bridge, middle, and neck positions. A five-position selector switch allows you to use each of the three pickups individually, while the 2 and 4 positions combine the neck and bridge pups with the middle one for that distinctive "quack" sound. A tremolo/whammy bar is included for note bending.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune. Additionally, it comes with everything you need to get started, including strings (installed), the tremolo/whammy bar, a heavy-duty zippered black gig bag with shoulder strap, and a truss-rod wrench.

    Good and Bad
Well, I have to say when I first received this guitar I was excited. First impression upon opening the box and having a look was WOW. In the picture the guitar looks to be more of a true white while the one I received was more of an off while classic creamy color which is fine with me. The pick guard and pickups however was actually more of a pure white so be aware of that, it doesn't bother me but it may others. I was pleased to see that the front of the head stock has just a small simple M in a subtle silvery gray on it rather then the word Monoprice. I think this was a good move by Monoprice as it give the guitar much, much more style and cool factor. It does say Monoprice on the back of the headstock in the same silver gray color with the words Pro Audio Series or something similar under it. I didn't find anywhere on the guitar that said "Made in China". It may say it somewhere but I haven't seen it. The wood of the neck and head stock appeared to be in perfect condition with no rouge edges and a satin finish. The frets look to be in good condition, with hardly a rouge edge to speak of. Overall, this guitar looks really cool and stylish. It's also go a bit of heft to it, I was expecting it to be lighter though I see the heavier weight as something positive that give the guitar an overall solid feel.

Hooked it up to my Amp (Fender Mustang V with Burgera 4x12) it was really impressed with the sound. I don't know how they make these single coil pickups compared to the name brand ones, and I'm no Fender Strat aficionado, but to me, the sound great overall. Dialing up some clean and light distortion/overdrive presets, all I can say it WOW again. For playing blues, jazz, alternative rock or old skool rock and roll, this freaking guitar is bad ace. The California classic must have more of a standard neck scale which I can really tell compared to my PRS 245. The spacing of the strings also seem to be a bit wider which actually makes this guitar a bit easier to play, I hadn't really realized what I was missing and if I ever buy another guitar I'll probably be looking for something that feels more like the Monoprice then the Smith. The set up out of the box is pretty good, but I think it can definitely be improved. To what extent remains to be seen but the initial setup was very playable. The knobs and selector switch feel very good, though I don't think the volume pot and possibly any of the others are logarithmic but they work well enough, not a deal breaker for me.

OK, negatives. When I first received the box, one end was completely open. I don't know when or where that happened and it quite possibly was UPS's fault. Pulling the guitar out which was inside the gig bag, there didn't appear to be any shipping damage of any kind so I don't know what was going on there. Removing the guitar from the gig bag the first thing I noticed was what looked like some dirt on the pickups though it easily wiped away. Next thing I noticed was the plastic covering over the pick guard, the shipping plastic film they put on electronics and the like, was partially missing and where is was missing the pick guard had quite a bit of scratches on it. Nothing major or too noticeable mind you but worth mentioning. Another pick guard on amazon would be cheap enough.

Now, here is the ONE thing that has me a bit concerned, mind you, this guitar is really quite awesome and just insane when you consider I paid $63.99 shipped for it. The one thing is, there is a bit of a noticeable gap on the sides of the neck pocket. The neck seems firmly attached and the pick where it fits at the back is tight with no gap. I don't know if this is common on Strats, I've seen pictures of some other strat style guitars and noticed this same thing. Not sure who the neck sits to the body at the back of the neck closest to the bridge but the overall tone and sustain of the guitar seem to be perfectly fine and actually quite good in reality. One thing I noticed while jamming on some cords was I would actually feel the body of the guitar resonating against my body which was an amazing sensation I'm not sure I've experienced to the same degree as on this Monoprice. It gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. That said, between the scratched pick guard and the neck side gap, this guitar is just about perfect save for the fact that my playing style causes me to accidentally turn down the volume knob. I don' know what the common fix is for this, perhaps I can get a reversed volume pot.

In conclusion, if it wasn't for the minor scratches and minor neck gap, I'd say this guitar was a no brainer. It sounds and plays great and perhaps I just got a bit of a questionable sample. I'm considering returning it for a replacement to see if this one was just a fluke. Either way, for what I paid, once again, it sounds great, plays great and looks great. The knobs feel good and the switch is tight. Don't know how it'll hold up over time but for the price, you will not find a better guitar. More times then not, you won't find a better guitar for twice the price. I have to wonder how they make any money off these things.

PROS: Looks great, plays great. Setup was pretty good out of the box. Hardware feels very acceptable. Subtle labeling give it a pro look like that of a more expensive guitar. If you can get on for $64 dollars like I did, there is no way you will regret the purchase. Playing Nirvana, Ramones, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty, 3 doors down, rock and roll, jazz, blues whatever, this guitar has given me much more versatility in my gear arsenal.

CONS: scratches in pick guard and minor noticeable side gap on neck. Perhaps it was just the one I received. Still the guitar plays and sounds great.

    This one was very nice
I purchased 2 guitars from Monoprice recently - an LP style and this strat copy. The LP was so badly set I I almost returned it but a string change, intonation adjustment and some neck work to to remedy some bad buzzing finally got it playable. Enough about that. This Strat was the total opposite - the frets were nice, the set-up was great (Obviously done by someone who knew what they were doing - or did I just get lucky??). The finish was very nice. Sound-wise was a total surprise - and in a good way. So overall - looked great, played great and sounded much better that the price. this was a good deal. So I'm 1 for 2 with Monoprice. Next time the have a sale I might try to break the tie.

PROS: Many Pros about this strat

CONS: so far Monoprice has been inconsistent with quality but if you can get lucky or can perform a set up the price is hard to beat. One thing that is consistent is the gigbag. Its about as much protection as nothing at all - better described as a dust cover. They should think about a better quality bag and put their name on i for some advertising

    MonoPrice has a winner
Beautiful guitar, plays as good as any strat I have ever picked up, very fast action with precision intonation all over the fretboard, stays in tune after playing hours of heavy hammering on the guitar.
Neck feels good as does all the hardware, sounds like a full priced strat after putting some DR 10's on the guitar.
Every part I have looked up from a strat MIM will fit on this guitar, Hmmmm?
If you are looking for a good playing guitar then you have found it right here on MonoPrice this is a outstanding piece of musical equipment and by the way the neck feels fantastic and has blazing fast action right out of the box without not even the slightest fret buzz (Thanks, Roger Gresco) who would have thought all this for under $90, for all you skeptics out there who feel you have to pay a small fortune for a great sounding quality built instrument you might better rethink this one and give it a shot you won't be sorry.
How are you doing this MonoPrice? Who are you getting to build these guitars? they a top notch.
By the way I bought this "California Classic" and the "Route 66" and both are equally as good in their own distinctive ways.
For those of you on the fence come on over you will not regret this purchase, if you can't tell I am mind boggled in how in the world MonoPrice can produce, sell and make a profit on such a nice guitar this is no el cheapo like you find on auction sites and pawn shops trust me I know.

PROS: Beautiful Guitar(Finish)not a bad spot nowhere on the guitar, Quality build, parts and sound.
These guitars have it all, I have some very expensive guitars and equipment and this guitar is no slouch or sacrifice to any of my other instruments.
    Beautiful craftsmanship.
Basswood sounds brillent with great tones and undertones.
    Maple Neck and Rosewood Fretboard.
    Triple pick-guard

CONS: Strings are not the best and I will replace the Nut with a Tusq®.
    Included pick sucks

    Hard to believe
I am a professional musician. I have been performing and recording for more than 20 years. I have owned expensive guitars and some real junk. I know the difference. Intonation, action, fret work, how well the guitar holds tuning.....etc. I bought this guitar because of some reviews I read. I was reluctant but hopeful.

This guitar is more than "good for the money". I have owned Made in Japan strats and Made in Mexico strats that didn't even come close to this thing. I plays amazingly well all the way up the neck with no buzzing or weirdness. It stays in tune and it sounds awesome. I don't know how they do it for $80 but its a pretty cool guitar. Get one.

    PROS: Price

CONS: for $80 its hard to find anything bad to say.

PROS: Bargain, vert playable. very decent fit and finish

    My third purchase
If you been holding off on buying a guitar, don't look no more, cause these are top of the line for the money. You can buy a Squire, AS, Xaviere or other low end guitar, and it won't be as sweet as these already set-up for you so you can start playing now.

PROS: This guitar is every bit as perfect as the other two I bought. Beautiful white finish and is set up better than my high dollar guitars. I am sold on monoprice guitars and intend on getting more of them for my grandkids.

CONS: None in my book. I'd like to see monoprice come out with hardshell cases for these guitars. I like my guitars in a nice case and sometimes the case will cost as much as the guitar or more. All 52 of guitars I have are in hard cases even these monoprice babies.

    Great Axe!
I bought 2 of these for my kids to learn, and now I want to buy a Tele and Les Paul for me! I have 2 of the real deal and the Monoprice guitars are great right out of the box. The problem with inexpensive guitars is intonation, and both were spot on right out of the box. Setup was great. Frets could use a little buffing on one but the other was fine. If that's your only complaint about a sub-$100 guitar, that's unreal.

PROS: Great guitar for a great price!

    CONS: None!

    California Special Solid Body Guitar
Very well priced for a very usable guitar. Stays in tune, sounds good and has very good build quality. Excellent customer service at Monoprice. This was very impressive. Every bit as good if not better than a guitar costing $100 more.

PROS: Good sounds, plays well, no buzzes, great finish, easy to play, and you get a carry-bag with it. And it was shipped in the bag for extra protection.

CONS: Frets could have used better dressing, and no certificate with the guitar.

    California Classic
This is a real strat copy true to specs and great craftsmanship sound and reliable as any other guitar out there. The price is unbelievable and I know I will have many years of playing time on this guitar! It is beautiful to look at and the tone is amazing, thank you Monoprice for making this model available for all us musicians.

    PROS: All Pros

    CONS: None

    Stratocaster copy white
This version of a white Stratocaster is phenomenal! It feels great in my hand and the action and set up is practically perfect straight out of the box! I absolutely love it! Thanks Monoprice for being you.

PROS: this guitar for the price is absolutely incredible! it looks like Jimi Hendrix's white Stratocaster. It's absolutely ready to play, other than tuning straight out of the box! To me, it sounds just as good as a Fender Stratocaster of which I own.

I would highly recommend this guitar to anybody. From a beginner to a pro musician. This is the third guitar I have purchased from Monoprice and have been completely satisfied with each guitar.

CONS: I personally have no complaints or cons.

what is under the pickguard? Could I add hummbuckers or they only routed for single coil pickups? I would love to set it up with hsh, hope someone can lift a few screws and peek under the hood for me. as soon as I get the green light the guitar will be on its way.

BEST ANSWER: A cavity in the body just like any other strat. You should just replace the whole pick guard assy with a pre-wired humbucker. Amazon sells them.
What size frets does it come with, what width at the nut and what radius is the fret board?
