Mechanical Gaming Keyboard w/2 Port USB Hub and Headset/Mic Jacks- Cherry MX Black

Get the edge on your competition with this Mechanical Gaming Keyboard from Monoprice!

Our primary form of interaction with our computers is through the keyboard, yet it is the one device that most of us take for granted. We blithely go on using whatever cheap, mushy feeling keyboards that came with our PCs. Yet, the difference between an ordinary membrane type keyboard and one with mechanical switches is astronomical.

Membrane style keyboards typically have a minimal travel distance. To register the keystroke the key must be completely depressed, yet instead of a positive feeling of bottoming out the key, it produces a mushy feeling with no tactile sensation of a full keypress. Because of the requirement to bottom out the key to get it to register and the lack of tactile feedback, a membrane keyboard can result in greater hand and finger fatigue and can even contribute to carpal tunnel issues.

On the other hand a mechanical keyboard uses physical switches for each key. The switches have longer travel, yet can register a keystroke without requiring full depression, depending on which type of switch is used. This allows gamers to "double-tap" more easily and allows for faster typing. This keyboard uses the industry leading Cherry MX Black switches. The switches are gold plated to prevent corrosion and have a life cycle of over 50 million keypresses, which is 5-10x more than that of a conventional membrane keyboard.

The Cherry MX Black switches are among the most popular for serious gamers. If you are the type of gamer or typist that tends to hit neighboring keys, the high actuation force of the Cherry MX Black switches (over that of the Cherry MX Red switches, for example), means that the stray keypresses are less likely to produce a character.

Another advantage of this mechanical keyboard is that it supports "N-key rollover". Each switch is individually monitored so that each keypress is registered properly, even though other keys are being actuated at the same time. Typical membrane keyboards and most mechanical keyboards with a USB interface only support 6-key rollover (maximum 6 keys registering at a time), but this model supports 64-key rollover, which allows for complex gaming combos as well as faster touch typing with fewer errors.

The keyboard features a soft-touch, rubberized surface for maximum comfort. An attachable wrist rest helps ensure that your hands are at the proper angle for efficient typing and reduces fatigue and stress related issues.

The keyboard includes a 2-port USB 2.0 hub along with convenient connections for headset/speakers and microphone. It connects to the computer through the USB interface and features a long 58" cable.

Note that the keys produce an audible click when they bottom out, so this keyboard is noisier than your typical membrane keyboard. However, many gamers and typists actually prefer the audible feedback and find it to help maintain faster typing speeds.

    Recommendation for Future Version
Please consider adding a backlight to a future version of this keyboard. It is difficult to find a good quality backlit keyboard.

    PROS: Mechanical Keyboard!

    CONS: No Backlight!

    I absolutely love this keyboard
I've owned this since I picked it up in August of last year, and have gone from loving it to now being dissatisfied with every other keyboard I have to use. I didn't realize it included a fantastic wrist pad, which works very, very well with the keyboard. The tactile experience of MX black keys, and the great location of the headphone/mic jacks and USB ports, the PS2 interface, the blue LED lighting...everything I care about with this keyboard is fantastic.

As for other comments that the keys fade? I haven't seen that, and I have worn letters off my fair share of laptop keyboards and USB keyboards, but even if all the keys were blank, it wouldn't affect my usage.

    Fantastic purchase, highly recommended.

PROS: This is the best keyboard I have ever used

    CONS: None

    Response from Monoprice

Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about the issues experienced with PID 9180. Unfortunately, it appears as though you may have received a defective keyboard. If you would like, I can help setup an RMA for a replacement. We offer a one year warranty for this product and obtaining a replacement would be of no additional cost. If you wanted to proceed with the RMA, please provide the order number and I can get that started right away. Apologies again for any inconvenience and hope this helps!

    Died after 2.5 Years
My impressions of this keyboard are generally favorable. While the keyboard itself was functional for 2.5 years, the lettering

on the keycaps started wearing much quicker than I expected. I don't know if they made any design changes since the initial release of this keyboard, but if they haven't they need to look at using better ink / bonding of the lettering so they don't wear so easily.

    PROS: Good switches

    USB Hub was useful

CONS: 2.5 years for a keyboard at this price level is an unacceptable lifespan.

    Warranty is only 1 year

    Great keyboard
I have only had this keyboard for about a week and I love it. I had a mechanical keyboard 10 years ago when I worked in a call center and I have longed for one ever sense. I could never really justify the cost of one but then I found this baby on Monoprice. All I can say is thank you for making a great keyboard at an affordable price. I knew I was going to love it but my wife was not so sure. She was worried about the noise and the size of the keyboard, but she has come around. We went laptop shopping this last weekend and she said that the keys on all the laptops felt terrible now that she is used to "my keyboard". I don't think you can say any more than that, it converted a sceptic to a true believer in just a matter of days.

PROS: Good weight, well balanced keys

    CONS: none

A joy to at least this journalist
I have been typing on this for a couple weeks now, using it for writing articles as much as gaming. The Cherry MX keys are incredibly responsive, providing a great feel for speed typing while, since they are the Black keys, they don't have the Cherry MX Blue's clicky sounds. This does not mean that it is quiet, but it does not seem to wake the girlfriend when I'm up late writing a piece. The only complaint would be that the case feels a bit flimsy, with a possible change to a stronger plastic. Other than that, this is a dream to type on and I recommend it to any buyer looking for a great keyboard to work on!

    PROS: Excellent response, quality components.

CONS: Outer case feels a bit cheaper constructed, wrist pad a bit short.

    Old School!
I like this better than my old Logitech G15 and Saitek backlit keyboards. I don't game - the "clicky buttons" are what I wanted, having cut my teeth on the old IBM keyboards that were indestructible (you know, the ones that you'd soak in the bathtub every so often to clean). I am a touch typist, and am faster than usual now thanks to the feel of the keyboard. Once you get past the initial cost of this keyboard you'll love it!

Only thing I'd improve is to add a volume knob (not up/down buttons, a knob is far superior) with a dedicated mute button. I don't use the pause/play/ff/rew buttons.

PROS: - LOVE the tactile response and the improved typing speed.
    - One backlight LED per key - no dim keys as in cheaper backlit keyboards.
    - Nice long USB cable (and mic/spkr extensions that I don't use)
    - Comes with tool for popping off keys, also comes with 4 "blank" orange keys

CONS: - No dedicated media buttons - have to hold Fn key and press one of the F keys to access media controls (volume up/down, mute, skip, pause, etc).

    Better than I expected!
I've felt mechanical keys before and liked my friend's Cherry MX (Red i think) and wanted one myself. I told him I found one on Monoprice and he told me it could be iffy as it's a monoprice brand. When it came and I started using it... It was a lot different than I expected and thought at first I wouldn't like it. After a few more days, I got more and more comfortable with it. Still make the mistake of hitting the wrong key in my games because the touch is rather soft, but loving it now. Highly recommended!

PROS: Keys aren't as heavy as I thought it'd be (especially was concerned from the other reviews)

    Actually like the orange keys.

For the sale price I got it, was an awesome purchase

    CONS: NONE so far!

Just came in. It's fantastic, great quality, and a lot quieter than I thought it was going to be! I've only ever used buckling spring keyboards before so this is a surprise for how quite it is. The keypress is very light and actuation distance is very small so you don't have to press very hard for it to register that you pressed (amazing). I typed this review in with it and didn't make one false keypress, even though I normally make lots of misses when I type.

    PROS: Quiet
    High build quality
    See it's features
Basic function keys for volume and skipping songs

CONS: It wasn't free, although I got it at 40% off on Monoprice's anniversary sale.

    Great Keyboard!
This is a great keyboard especially since I got it on sale for $60! Typing on this thing feels great and I don't think I can ever go back to using non-mechanical keyboards anymore.

    PROS: Fully Mechanical

    Four Extra Colored Keys

    Included Palm Rest

    Feels Great to Use

    CONS: A bit heavy
