    HDBaseT™ 4x4 HDMI® Matrix Switch and Receivers

Monoprice is a proud member of the HDBaseT Alliance

Take complete control over all of your video subsystems with this HDBaseT™ 4x4 HDMI® Matrix Switch kit from Monoprice!

The heart of this kit is a 4x4 Matrix Switch, which allows you to route signals from any of the four video inputs to any or all of the four video outputs, in any combination. The Matrix can be controlled using the included Remote or a PC via an RS232 serial connection and the included app.

In addition to the switching functions, this Matrix is also a video extender using the HDBaseT standard. HDBaseT is the superior standard for extending HDMI video signals to distances up to 100 meters over just a single Cat6 Ethernet cable (up to 70 meters using Cat5e cable). Additionally, it can be daisy chained up to 8 times, giving a maximum total extension distance of up to 800 meters!

The HDBaseT standard also provides for the transmission of infrared remote control signals and 100Base-TX Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) network traffic. The network connection is input to the Matrix and is distributed to each receiver of the same Cat6 cable that carries the video and IR signals. Each receiver includes a 2-port Ethernet switch for direct connection to network aware equipment or connection to a larger switch for local distribution.

This system provides a minimum data transfer rate of 6.75Gbps, which means that it supports High Speed 1080p and 3D video signals, as well as high definition multichannel audio, including Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master Audio™. The kit includes everything you need to get up and running except the Ethernet cable. While it will function using Cat5e, we highly recommend using Cat6 or even Cat7 cables for best results.

    Features:

    • Supports 1080p and 3D video modes
    • Supports high definition, 7.1-channel audio, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
    • Distributes any input to any output
    • Extend up to 100 meters using Cat6 cable (up to 70m using Cat5e)
    • Can be mounted in a 19" rack (mounting hardware included)
    • Supports forward or backward IR extension
    • Supports minimum 6.75Gbps data transmission rate
    • Supports HDCP v1.2
    • Includes instructions and app for RS232 control
    • Includes IR remote control
    • Supports Deep Color up to 36-bits (12-bits/channel)
    • Supports x.v.Color™
    • Can be daisy chained 8 times for a maximum extension distance of 800 meters
    • Extends 100Base-TX 100Mpbs network traffic

Note: Monoprice strongly recommends using 22AWG, 24AWG, or active HDMI cables with Redmere technology to achieve the best results and to ensure minimum signal loss over longer distances.

    Cat5 Problems

    Pros: Works well

    Cons: Weak Cat5 connections

Having suffered through failures of three 8151 units, I purchased this item a year ago. For the most part it has worked quite well. I had a failure of one of the remote power supplies but I am only using three of the four remotes so I had a spare. I live in a motorhome and, as a result, there is always some movement. On occasion the signal to one or other of the three TV's connected will fail. I have found by slightly moving the Cat5 cable on the back of the matrix switch the dead channel will wake up again. I sometimes go weeks without a problem. Then it fails and reconnects repeatedly until I go adjust the Cat5 cable. I am unsure what to do about this problem. I have searched for a more solid Cat5 terminator with no success. My cables are factory made and I have three identical cables to all three locations and the problem occurs with all cables.

    Does not last

    Pros: Price
    Good picture

    Cons: Unit fails.
    Poor documentation.

We ordered 2 units on October 30th of 2014 (10682). One unit had dead inputs when unpacked. We tried several different devices and cables on the bad inputs and all failed. Used the same devices and cables on the 2nd unit and all worked fine. We received an RMA replacement in December of 2014. In January of 2016 we discovered that 2 of the HDMI inputs had failed. We contacted Monoprice in January 2016 but they refuse to repair or replace the unit. $1500 is a great price but only if the equipment lasts longer than 13 months. I would give a higher rating but cannot for a product that has failed twice in 13 months.

Pros: Good price. Good video and audio.

Cons: 2 units failed in 13 months. Poor user documentation.

On October 30, 2014 we ordered 2 units for use in our Jr High. 1 unit has worked without any issues. The other unit had dead inputs when unpacked. Some of the HDMI inputs did not work with any equipment we attached. We received an RMA replacement unit in December of 2014. In January of 2016 we discovered that 2 of the HDMI inputs fail to work. Monoprice will not repair or replace the unit. $1500 is a great price but only if the equipment lasts longer than 13 months. We had 2 units fail in a 13 month time frame.

Works well except for IP control

Pros: Inexpensive compared to other options
    Works

Cons: Control over IP is not available outside of the included software

I purchased two units to include in a larger AV system. obviously this means integrating them into a universal controller. I *thought* they could be controlled over IP which is why I bought them, but this can only be done using the windows based software included with the units. That's like selling an AWD vehicle, but the AWD only works on test drives. Useless.

Pros: Works as advertised. No cut outs or distortion. Nice having two LAN connections.

Cons: Loud fan if left on for a while. No way to switch inputs at remote end.

I went through not one but two Monoprice 8151 4x4 Matrix switches. Both of them crapped out on me after a year or so of usage. After my second unit died, I decided to try buying an HDBaseT unit since I assumed it would be built to a higher standard - the 8151 is garbage.

So far, I'm quite impressed with this new unit. I suppose time will tell. It does everything I ask of it. Having two 100-meg LAN connections at the far end is a nice touch. You can hook up a streaming device or a PC or something without running an extra cable.

Be mindful of turning the matrix switch off when you're not actually watching TV. If the unit is left on for more than a few hours (8-12 I'd guess) it has an internal fan that really kicks into high gear and makes quite a racket. I guess it's good that it has that measure to protect itself from overheating, but it would have been nice for Monoprice to have designed a quieter cooling solution for it.

Overall, while this unit is incredibly expensive, it seems to do what it was designed for, so it gets a thumbs up from me. Rest assured if it ever craps out on me like my 8151s did, I'll be back here to let you know!
