HDBaseT™ 4x4 HDMI® Matrix Switch and Receivers

Monoprice is a proud member of the HDBaseT Alliance

Take complete control over all of your video subsystems with this HDBaseT™ 4x4 HDMI® Matrix Switch kit from Monoprice!

The heart of this kit is a 4x4 Matrix Switch, which allows you to route signals from any of the four video inputs to any or all of the four video outputs, in any combination. The Matrix can be controlled using the included Remote or a PC via an RS232 serial connection and the included app.

In addition to the switching functions, this Matrix is also a video extender using the HDBaseT standard. HDBaseT is the superior standard for extending HDMI video signals to distances up to 100 meters over just a single Cat6 Ethernet cable (up to 70 meters using Cat5e cable). Additionally, it can be daisy chained up to 8 times, giving a maximum total extension distance of up to 800 meters!

The HDBaseT standard also provides for the transmission of infrared remote control signals and 100Base-TX Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) network traffic. The network connection is input to the Matrix and is distributed to each receiver of the same Cat6 cable that carries the video and IR signals. Each receiver includes a 2-port Ethernet switch for direct connection to network aware equipment or connection to a larger switch for local distribution.

This system provides a minimum data transfer rate of 6.75Gbps, which means that it supports High Speed 1080p and 3D video signals, as well as high definition multichannel audio, including Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master Audio™. The kit includes everything you need to get up and running except the Ethernet cable. While it will function using Cat5e, we highly recommend using Cat6 or even Cat7 cables for best results.

  • Supports 1080p and 3D video modes
  • Supports high definition, 7.1-channel audio, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
  • Distributes any input to any output
  • Extend up to 100 meters using Cat6 cable (up to 70m using Cat5e)
  • Can be mounted in a 19" rack (mounting hardware included)

Third Time's the charm?

Pros: Works as advertised. No cut outs or distortion. Nice having two LAN connections.

Cons: Loud fan if left on for a while. No way to switch inputs at remote end.

I went through not one but two Monoprice 8151 4x4 Matrix switches. Both of them crapped out on me after a year or so of usage. After my second unit died, I decided to try buying an HDBaseT unit since I assumed it would be built to a higher standard - the 8151 is garbage.

So far, I'm quite impressed with this new unit. I suppose time will tell. It does everything I ask of it. Having two 100-meg LAN connections at the far end is a nice touch. You can hook up a streaming device or a PC or something without running an extra cable.

Be mindful of turning the matrix switch off when you're not actually watching TV. If the unit is left on for more than a few hours (8-12 I'd guess) it has an internal fan that really kicks into high gear and makes quite a racket. I guess it's good that it has that measure to protect itself from overheating, but it would have been nice for Monoprice to have designed a quieter cooling solution for it.

Overall, while this unit is incredibly expensive, it seems to do what it was designed for, so it gets a thumbs up from me. Rest assured if it ever craps out on me like my 8151s did, I'll be back here to let you know!

External IP or RS232 control?

Pros: fast switching, very little if any black screen/delay when changing inputs. Solid build quality. Receiving units are small enough to tuck behind TVs.

Cons: At this time I am unable to control this device via external application. I can control it via IP commands on my PC via the included software, but wish to use a universal android remote application to control the device as I do with all of my other A/V hardware (including the monoprice 8151 that this unit is replacing). A chat session yielded nothing. I am hoping I'll get some help here.

Nice product external control would be very welcome. Please help!

Hi Andy,

Thank you for your review on PID 10682. It's great to hear that you have been satisfied with the quality of this HDBaseT matrix! Regarding your inquiry, we unfortunately do not offer any solutions for using this unit with an Android remote application at this time. We would be unable to provide support for that type of setup, sorry to say. For RS232 control, we would only be able to assist you in installing the included control interface and provide the command codes which are listed in the manual. I truly apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can assist you with!

Worked like a charm!

Pros: Price

Cons: No EDID management
Redmere cables DO NOT work except for from the source to the matrix, not at the TV.

Set up this unit and worked like a charm first try, that is, after I swapped out all of the redmere 3' cables I had bought for the behind the TV to Extender connection. The Redmere cables are working just fine at the main box. The problem they exhibit is an HDCP flicker. So there's a problem there with those. Just be wary of that when purchasing this unit. Using normal everyday cheapo cables work just fine.

Very pleased with this unit, the instructions could be more informative in that they mention that device feedback codes through RS232 are available, but in contact with Monoprice tech support I learned that's not the case. Have to sniff out your own feedback. I have yet to do that, just using IR for now. But no complaints.

When switching to an input already in use, the screen will go blue for a couple seconds on those displays using that input, not a big deal, just something you should expect when you buy this product.

I have it connected to 4 identical TV's using Monoprice CAT6 cable. The IR function works fantastic too as my On Controls IR blaster gets routed through to all TV's perfectly. Just pay attention to the RX and TX on the IR units. They cannot be interchanged.

Now lets just hope this thing doesn't crap out anytime soon.....

Will not work with Monoprice HDMI Cables w/ Redmere

  • Ryan Messner,

Pros: Cost effective and very easy to setup. Does exactly what you'd expect it to

Cons: As pointed out in previous posts, it downscales audio functionality and video resolution to the lowest available on the sourced outputs

My frustration comes with following the recommendation that I use Monoprice HDMI cables w/ Redmere technology (yes I had them connected the right way as well as reversed in all possible configurations). So I splurged and bought the nicer cables because I just spent like $1600 on the switch. After pulling my hair out and testing all the data cabling in the new house, I decided to just dumb it down and try the regular HDMI cables from Comcast when they setup the boxes. What do you know, it worked instantly without any issues. I'm going to be returning all those Redmere cables and replacing them with normal HDMI.

PDF Needs to be selectable

Pros: It works well so far

Cons: I am not able to highlight the rs-232 commands on the pdf. I really don't want to manually type each one out. Their is a lot of chance for error not to mention the pain in the ass.

Good. Fix the pdf asap please
