what version of Bluetooth is this device using?
    A shopper on Aug 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't think its that modern. It distorts if your phone is turned up all the way which was something I remember happening with older Bluetooth devices.

Also works when powered by USB
It's works well and sound quality is great. I opened mine up to figure out if it could be hacked to be powered by USB instead of AC for use in the car. Determined that if 5 volts power was provide provided "into" the USB A port it would be routed to the Bluetooth PCB. Power would not be routed into the ACDC converter due to diode protection. However solder pads to the main power pc separated on reassembly as they are fragile and internal Bluetooth PCB doesn't quite fit right due to the mini transformer right next to it. Take away form this is don't open the device unless you are willing to take the risk and do a solder+wire repair. Just use a USB A to A cable (e.g. item 206) to power the device from a car charger (e.g. item 6766 ).

PROS: Great sound quality. Simple to configure. Can be powered via USB 5V source using a USB A-A cable.

CONS: Internal Power PCB has fragile pads/traces with stress on solder joints to the Bluetooth PCB. Missing a e.g. mini usb power input. Not documented that it can be powered via USB 5V source using a USB A-A cable.

    Be careful, audiophiles...
Very easy to use. Sets up quick - no muss no fuss. And whoever thinks this needs the absolute newest iOS 4.2 with AirPlay is incorrect. This thing works with any iPhone that can utilize a bluetooth headset. So as far as easy to use, it's as simple as it gets. Now, audio quality-wise - well see my cons...

However, the audio range of this unit leaves a lot to be desired. Please note the specifications which say the units' -3db point is 70Hz. This is very apparent the first time you listen to music and might even be more like -3db @ 100Hz , based on my ear. The low-end bass performance of this box is terrible for most uses. And there's a lot in today's music that provides the lowest octaves in music from 35Hz to 100Hz. So - if you're listening to mostly audiobooks, jazz, etc. this might not be an issue for you. But if you listen to Pop, Rock, R&B, etc. the bottom octave is basically missing.

I hope that MonoPrice can have the design modified to correct this problem, but for the moment, my recommendation is to go with the BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway until this unit can cover 20Hz to 20kHz +/- 3db.

    PROS: Ease of Use

CONS: Audio Range (low end -3db @ 70Hz is unacceptable for today's music)

Awesome. Download app to solve PAIRING issue.
    Very nice.

TIP: For ANDROID, download 'Bluetooth Profile Widget' for free from app store. Add widget to home screen. Now you can pair/unpair to it with A SINGLE TOUCH. Free. With the app, the pairing issue is painless and convenient.

Buying a second one. Works great in car too.

Works perfectly if you do it right
PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT DISTORTION READ THIS! I paired this device to an iPad and got that horrible distortion I had read about in the reviews. By setting the iPad volume to about 60%, the distortion goes away. Use the volume knob on your receiver/amp/whatever-you-hooked-this-up-to to control the volume instead to make it louder.

    PROS: Wireless audio, simple setup

    CONS: Weird volume bug

    It shouts at you
Every time you power up this device, a lady yells "THE BLUETOOTH DEVICE IS READY TO PAIR", then one second later, "THE BLUETOOTH DEVICE IS CONNECTED SUCCESSFULLY". I'm not sure why they didn't go with a beep of some kind. This made the device basically unusable for me, and I had to RMA it (despite the waste of shipping both ways). It works fine, just be aware of what you're getting into.

    PROS: Works fine, sounds good

CONS: You should be aware that this device will shout at you every time you turn it on

Excellent Device - USB Power Does Work
I think this is a great device, I usually don't write reviews unless I'm in complete shock of how great something is, but I noticed another reviewer claiming that the USB port on the adapter couldn't be used to power it. I beg to differ. I set one of these up in my girlfriend's car, powering it through the USB port. Try one of these out guys, it's only $20, and you'll be surprised what $20 will get you on Monoprice. Excellence.

PROS: Works as it should. Audio quality is not diminished like I expected.

CONS: I can't automatically connect, but that's probably due to my iPhone, not the device. Blue blinking light kind of annoying (easily fixable with a piece of electrical tape). Doesn't include male-male USB cable, must be bought separately.

    Disappointed in sound quality
I purchased this to hook up in my car, as my car has an auxiliary input and USB power in the center console. I have a waterproof iPhone case that's difficult to hook up to the auxiliary input because I have to unscrew a waterproof seal and attach an adapter before I can connect it to the auxiliary cable, so I thought this would be an answer to my problems. Close, but not quite.

Firstly, I find the male USB A port an odd choice for powering the unit as it requires the purchase of a special cable I've never seen before. Luckily Monoprice has those cables available for cheap, so that wasn't a huge deal. I'm just lucky I knew that ahead of time to add it to my order. The unit installed okay, powered fine from the USB charger in my car, and paired with my iPhone just fine.

My first impression was that the audio quality was not very good. It sounded a little tinny and overly bass-sounding at the same time. I adjusted my EQ to bring the treble and bass down a few notches each and that seemed to help out a bit. It's definitely not the same audio quality as the analog headphone jack though. I'm not sure how it's compressing the audio to send over Bluetooth, but it's not the greatest. This may be an issue with all Bluetooth products. I'm not sure as this is my first Bluetooth audio product, and I tend to have a really picky ear when it comes to audio quality. It's not unlistenable, just not as good as what I had before.

The other issue I noticed with regard to audio quality is that there was a stutter every couple minutes in the audio. Sometimes they'd be 30 seconds apart, sometimes four minutes, but they happened on average once or twice a song. Again, this could be my picky ear. I asked my wife if she heard the stutters and she didn't notice most of them, unless it was a part of a song with a prominent sustained note when the stutter happened.

My final disappointment is that the Bluetooth connection had to be manually re-connected every time it was disconnected. I understand the reasoning for this, in that primarily this will be used in the home and you don't want your phone always connected to your stereo when you're home, but in my car it might be nice. It's too bad this isn't a setting you can switch on or off.

Overall, it's a decent product for the price. It works for the most part but I think I may discontinue using it soon because of the poorer sound quality. People with a less discerning ear might not be bothered by the sound quality (I'm probably the pickiest person I know when it comes to sound quality that I'll tolerate) but for me it's right on the edge of what I'm okay with.

PROS: Cheap way to set up Bluetooth audio streaming
    Small and compact
    Can be powered by USB

CONS: Audio quality is not as good as analog audio cable
    Audio skips/stutters every couple minutes

    Great
This was easy to instal and exactly what I needed. Since I don't want to spend all the money on changing everything in my house to bluetooth, this is perfect. When you factor in the price and the ease of ordering from monoprice, you can't lose with this product.

    PROS: size, convienience, price

    CONS: none

    Works great in my car!
autoconnect is disabled by design because this was designed mainly for home use. I get that and I can't really complain. Since I have had it in my car I wanted to force it to autoconnect. I have tried various "bluetooth autoconnect" android apps as well as tinkered with tasker settings but without luck yet. I'm sure there must be a way but i haven't had time to solve it.

PROS: -Can be powered by standard usb
-Works from anywhere within my car
-Starts up (becomes connectable) quickly when starting my car

    CONS: -Hard to force autoconnect

Works great for use in car!
I bought two of these to use on me and my wifes car. I purchased a 3 ft male to male USB cord and a generic $1.22 car charger to power it (btw the USB port on this thing is used to power it - it is a "power IN" port and does not power any other devices).
First time it connected there was tons of static, even when the phone wasn't playing. I tried different wires and eventually tired my Belkin USB charger. Once I connected it with the Belkin charger all static virtually disappeared. The only other downside is that I wish it would auto-connect, so I just jump in my car and start playing the music..

    PROS: +Fairly small
+Good sound quality, though the straight Line In cable is still better
+Works great & no static when powered by a QUALITY USB car charger.
+Pairing is super quick and easy

CONS: -Sound quality greatly degrades and it buzzes like crazy when using the cheapo car chargers.
-Does not auto connect to iPhone (remains paired, but you must manually select "connect" each time you use it or get into the car)
