Premium 3D Printer Filament PLA 1.75MM 1kg/spool, Red

Get outstanding 3D printing results when you use 1.75mm PLA 3D Printer Filament from Monoprice!

PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn.

This 1 Kg spool features a thickness of 1.75mm ±0.10mm, with a roundness variation of only 0.03mm. It has a nominal processing temperature of 210° C (410°F). Thickness and roundness factors are laser measured at the factory to ensure accuracy over the entire length of the filament.

The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot.

    Reel Dimensions:

Not really red, but not a big deal

Pros: First prints with this were some gears for a clock. Gears turned out very nice, and quite strong.

Cons: This material is not opaque as other colors are. Instead it's slightly translucent, giving it a very shiny look, and lets some amount of light shine through it. If I had to make a comparison, it looks kinda like a Jolly Rancher. This isn't a "con" if that's what you're looking for, but I was hoping for a solid red.

Material is as well as any other PLA from Monoprice, which is to say it's pretty decent.

Pros: I have had nothing but good prints out of the Monoprice PLA

Cons: Its not red. Its a really nice orange color that I actually like but its not red.

It looks like they need to add a bit more pigment in these PLA filaments. You can get mostly opaque prints if you lower the temp but it does come put a bit translucent.
Other than that I have had nothing but good prints out of this filament and this is my third roll.

Pros: Goes down cleanly. Not a single bubble or surface imperfection in the whole reel, which meant clean feeds and no jams.

Cons: A little translucent for my taste. Not really suited to some applications because of that.

Bought a red reel to print a batch of replacement covers. Went down cleanly, reasonable surface finish. I find that PLA is generally a lot more consistent between brands and batches than ABS, but this is some of the better PLA I have used.

    Pros: Great price
    Looks good

The most important tip I can give is to experiment with the extruder temperature if you are having problems with the filament sticking. I was using this filament with a Makerbot Replicator 2 which has a default extruder temperature of 230 C. With this filament nothing with sticking to the build platform, I even tried the blue painter's tape trick. Once I lowered the extruder temp to 220 C and had good results. I'm very happy with this filament and will buy more from Monoprice soon!
