Mini DisplayPort 1.1 Video + S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio to HDMI® Converter

Connect your mini DisplayPort and Toslink equipped MacBook®, laptop, or PC to an HDMI® display using this Mini DisplayPort Video + S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio to HDMI® Converter from Monoprice.

This adapter combines the mini DisplayPort video signal and the Digital Optical (Toslink) audio signal from the 3.5mm digital audio output into an HDMI audio/video signal. The adapter supports resolutions up to 1920x1080p, up to 36-bit Deep Color (12-bits per channel), and high-definition, multichannel audio, including DTS-HD Master Audio™ and Dolby TrueHD™. The adapter is powered using an available USB port. Note that this is not bidirectional and therefore will NOT convert HDMI video to mini DisplayPort.

    Features:

    • 28" cable length
    • Supports resolutions up to 1920x1080p
    • Supports up to 12-bit per channel (36-bit total) Deep Color
    • Support uncompressed 2-channel and 5.1-channel LPCM audio
    • Supports compressed 5.1-channel audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD

Note for Mac® Mini users using dual monitors: There is an unresolved issue with using both the mini-DVI and Mini DisplayPort video outputs at the same time. When the mini-DVI cable is disconnected, the Mini DisplayPort output ceases to function, causing the display to show an "unsupported format" error. The solution is to use the mini-DVI output for the main display and the Mini DisplayPort output for the secondary display.

The adapter worked very well to connect an early 2010 iMac to an HDTV in the next room, using two HDMI wall jacks and a Monoprice HDMI cable in each room and within the wall. The picture and sound on the TV are just fine, and I can even use the Magic Mouse (bluetooth) in the TV room. I ordered this adapter after reading poor reviews of similar products from other manufacturers.

PROS: Works well - just as advertised.

CONS: Requires three computer port connections, but that is merely because of the older iMac's limitations. Newer iMac's should be able to use the simpler adapter (Product ID 5311).

    Works Great!!
Note for existing and future purchasers: Before going into a panic and blowing your top after connecting to your Mac and only getting only audio, be sure to check your mac's display settings for the proper output. Mac default setting may be at 1080p, at least mine was. The monitor I was connecting to only displays 1080i ! If Mac output is incorrectly set..you get audio only ! So before you give up and ship it back thinking it doesn't work check your display outputs...just a heads up..

PROS: Everything needed for non HDMI equipped macbooks to display on TV monitors..

CONS: Lacks informative instructions and data.

Video + Audio Dolby 5.1 Surround with '09 MacBook Pro 13"!!!
I was looking for an all-in-one solution to connect my '09 MacBook Pro 13" to my 40" Samsung HDTV. Sadly, Apple does not send audio via the MiniDisplay port on the '09 MBP. I have heard that they do send audio on the '10 MBP, but cannot confirm. This actually converts both audio and video to HDMI so that you can connect to your HDTV and/or your Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound System. The other item (Product ID 5969) does not support Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound. You can now watch/stream movies from your MBP to your HDTV with Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound!!!

PROS: Works with my '09 MacBook Pro 13"! Audio + video converted to HDMI! Supports Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound!

CONS: No cons for this device. Just a con of the '09 MacBook Pro in that it does not convert audio to HDMI via the MiniDisplay port

    Great product
Impressed by how easy and seamless this little pics of hardware is. Mac mini connected to tv is pretty awesome!

PROS: Works amazingly well. No issues with a 2009 Mac mini connected to a 52" Samsung TV.

    CONS: A little expensive.

    Mini Displayport Cable
I ordered this cable to attach a laptop to our HD Big Screen. It was reasonably priced, shipped in a timely manner and works flawlessly. We have enjoyed watching HD content from the internet on our television.

    Good product
I guess I am one of the first ones to get hold of this product. Turned out to be a good purchase.. While I was waiting for this product to be in stock, I had hooked up my mac mini to the sound receiver via composite. As soon I got this product and hooked it up.. I could immediately see the difference!.. it was pure digital 5.1 sound!. So I know this product works..

but I'd like to give you guys an fyi.

The toslink Cable has small plastic caps on each end of it. REMOVE THIS.. before you try to jam the toslink cable into the adapter. For a few minutes I couldn't figure out why the toslink cable wasn't going in.. then I had to look up online to learn that I had to remove the small transparent caps at it's ends..lol.

anyways.. good product.. and very good price.

Perfect for my older Mac Mini
I picked this up so I could integrate my late 2009 Mac Mini into my home theater via HDMI. It does exactly what it claims to, I am able to view content at 1080p with dts and AC3 without issue.

PROS: No effort to install. Plug in the cables and go.

CONS: The red light is kind of annoying.

THE hdmi adapter for the mac mini
There are few hdmi adapters for apple computers, fewer still that combine both audio and video. This one does both brilliantly. Its a simple plug and play - literally connect the usb, mini displayport, the toslink digital audio connectors then connect to the hdmi on your tv and you're done. No configurations or settings needed. It just works! I use this on my home theater mac mini, and its perfect. Simple to connect and use - and Monoprice's price is well below the others, and as far as I can tell, every bit as good. For mac users wanting both digital audio and video in an hdmi adapter, look no further!

    Almost perfect
This does exactly what it says: adds audio to the HDMI output from an older Mac Mini (which doesn't send audio out via a regular Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter) so the audio plays through a TV. So that's great.

What's a little irritating is that the image on the TV is now slightly overscanned - you lose a very small amount of the image at all sides.. Using the previous (non-audio) HDMI connection, the image was perfectly sized to the screen. Somehow this device is interfering with my LG TV's ability to correctly negotiate screen size with the Mac.

The Displays control panel on the Mac now has an "Overscan" check-box, which didn't appear before. Unchecking the box shrinks the image so you can see the whole thing, but then it displays inside a wide black border.

So the options are either a slightly-too-big screen image, or a much-too-small screen image. The slightly-too-big one is not terrible, so i'm going with that, because the addition of the audio feed is a huge improvement.

So not a huge complaint, just a quibble. But clearly some combinations of MacMini and TV will not set the screen size exactly right.

    PROS: Easy to connect
    Works as described

CONS: Image is slightly overscanned (at least with some combinations of Mac Mini and TV)

Is the light supposed to be on continuously? When I plug in the USB cable to my laptop, the red light comes on for a split second then turns off. Doesn't seem to be working. No audio OR video going to my TV. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 17" laptop with a mini dvi out and optical output.

BEST ANSWER: I really like mine. The light comes on when you're running a signal from your device to the monitor/TV. It will stay on only as long as a signal is going from your Mac to the display. It comes on at first to show the connection is good. The light stays on as long as it sends a signal to the receiving device, monitor/TV. The light remains off when a signal is not going to the TV/monitor.
