S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio Splitter

This adapter splits a single S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio signal into two outputs. It allows you to connect a single optical audio source, such as the output of a gaming console or Blu-ray™ player, to two audio devices, such as a television and an AV receiver.

Note that this is a splitter, which repeats the same signal to two outputs. It cannot be used to combine or switch between two inputs. If you need to switch two or three digital optical audio sources into a single output device, consider the 3x1 S/PDIF (Toslink) Digital Optical Audio Bi-Directional Manual Switch (PID 2946).

    Just what I neede
I bought this to do a 2 into 1 for my home theater system. I had to connect an Xbox 360 and a PS3 into my surround system and this worked like a charm. Not much else you can say, it just plain works. The only detail worth noting is that both systems can not be on at the same time as they will interfere with one another.

    PROS: -cheap
    -works

    CONS: -none

    As advertised. Very Nice
This is a bit of a backdoor way to accomplish some needs, but it worked great for taking the single Optical out from my TV and splitting it into two devices (receiver and wireless headset)

I should not that this does not work if both devices are on at the same time, but if one is off it performs as I would hope.

    PROS: Very Nice Quality
    Very Nice Performance

Read this for connecting 2 devices to 1 receiver!
For people who want to connect 2 optical audio sources to 1 receiver, here's the deal. Other reviewers have mentioned that this adapter will work for this configuration as long as only one device is on, and I don't doubt their results. However, the potential issue is that not all devices kill the optical signal when you power them off.

I tried to use this adapter with a DVD player and a WD TV Live streaming player, and because the WD never turns off its TOSLINK signal, the DVD player's signal can't ever take over and get to the receiver. How to work around this? You could unplug the power or the optical cable from the offending device, or you may be able turn the signal on and off in the device's Settings menu, but you'll have to do it every time you want to switch. No thanks.

So if you want to try this adapter for a 2-sources-to-1-receiver connection, before buying you should should turn each device on, enable its optical connection if not already active, and then power off the device and make sure the red beam at the receiver's end of the optical cable goes out. If this doesn't happen for both devices, the adapter will not work as expected and you'll need the switch (PID 2946) instead, as Monoprice indicates in the description. The reviews for this adapter claiming it could function as an automatic switch between 2 optical sources were the only reason I didn't buy the proper switch myself.

P.S. I rated this product a "5" to help this message stand out. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't deserve a "10" when used as intended.

    Didn't work for my purpose
I bought this to split the sound signal from my tv so that I could send it both to my sound bar and my stereo. The split signal goes to the stereo just fine, but because the splitter does not have an amplifier it does not work with my sound bar. This should work fine if you do not need amplification.

    PROS: simple

    inexpensive

    CONS: no amplifier

didn't work with my sound bar

    Excellent product
I used it to hook my xbox and cable box up to the same receiver that only had one optical input. Works great and I couldn't find anything that would do the same thing for anywhere close to this price.

Worked as advertised, was able to split audio coming from my Samsung TV to Samsung Soundbar & Home theater system. Will recommend this splitter to anyone needing to connect their Home Theater system & Soundbar to their TV.

PROS: Excellent built and small enough to hidden out of site.

    CONS: None

Used this to split my xbox 360 audio, once to my receiver, and once to my digital wireless headphones transmitter. Works awesome and it's so cheap!

Great!!! Bought it to plugin my ps3 and 360 into one digital input on my audio receiver, and works like a charm. Just make sure you plugin all the cables in the same orientation (read other reviews). I had to tape them to a board to make sure the cables wouldn't spin around freely, but after I did that, I haven't had any problems.

Even the stereo store was impressed
When I had my stereo zone 2 speakers installed, I got this unit because I needed to split my signal and send one copy into an analog line for zone 2 speakers. The installer from the higher end audio store was pleasantly surprised by the unit. After owning it for nearly two years, it still worked flawlessly, no evidence of cut-outs, or any problems at all. This is a "setup and forget" device. I forgot about it until I had to take unhook my stereo in order to move.

PROS: Unpowered device that actually does everything it claims

CONS: Need to be careful plugging it in the first time to get good connection

    PROS: looks nice

    CONS: didn't work
