Hi, can I use this in the reverse scenario than what seems to be intended, i.e., to go from stereo RCA outputs on one device to a 3.5 mm input on another device (incorporating a male-to-male 3.5 mm cable)?

BEST ANSWER: The website states:
While most mobile devices use the 3.5mm stereo headphone output, most home audio systems with an amplifier or receiver use RCA jacks for audio inputs. This cable is ideal for adapting the output of your mp3 player or phone to stereo RCA plugs for connecting to your home audio system.
To me the above means that the cable is ideal for connecting the output of a device with a 3.5 mm jack (such as an mp3 player or a phone) to the input of a device with RCA jacks (such as an amplifier or receiver).
I do not see any reason why you could not connect a device with an RCA output (such as an amplifier or receiver) to a device with a 3.5 mm input such as a speaker using a male to male 3.5 mm cable.
The cable can carry a signal in either direction. Just do not connect the output of one device to the output of another device. The cable is meant to be used to connect the output of one device to the input of another device.

I do not know. I was trying to reverse it myself by trying to plug-in two computers into one stereo speakers. It did not work and my boss who is a old-time broadcast engineer said I would need separate wires going into a mixer to make it work. He was also amazed that nothing was damaged in the attempt.

No, you need a cable like this but with a FEMALE 3.5 mm end so you can insert the male end of your headset into it and connect the two RCA (red & white) ends to your TV sound output.

Is the overall length of this 6" (including the ends/fittings), or is the cable portion 6" and the overall length including the ends is 8" or something?

BEST ANSWER: The overall length is approximately 6 and 15/16th inches. The cable portion that is flexible, excluding the plugs and the rigid stress relief, is 3 and 1/8th inches.

It is somewhere in the middle. It’s just shy of 7” from plug to plug tip. 6.5” would be the length from plug to plug when plugged in.

Quality piece that comes in handy
I have had this for a while now and this has really come in handy as an adaptor for various needs. Standard 3.5mm computer speaker jack to a standard RCA audio. Solid device connection as well as solid wire to connector.

Worked like a charm!
I needed this plus a RCA to 1/4 adaptor ( Also purchased from Monoprice) to run in to my mixer for my Comica wireless microphones.

Well made little cable.
Non-crappy versions of this particular type of cable seem to be rare. Happy to report that this seems like a pretty rugged cable. It gets used on stage so it needs durability!

Looks great, works poorly
Cuts out first time i tried it. Isolated this one cable as the source of cutting out. Without it everything's great. I needed this as an extension but it's got a short or something in it. I tried fiddling with it, but cannot get it to keep a clean signal. Will be returning.
