Simply A mode is when the Audio is passed through the HDMI cable to your Television. B mode is when the Audio is passed through the Toslink out to whatever you have connected to the optical output to be decoded by your receiver.

This is from the manual
Mode Select Switch
A : The capabilities of the connected sink/display device are sent to the source. In most cases, this limits the audio output to 2-channel PCM. This is the default setting.
B : The source device is told that all available audio modes are supported. This allows you to select advance multichannel audio streams for playback on your home theater audio system.
The problem is when I select B, my laptop still recognizes stereo only instead of other channels like 5.1. I'm using HDMI from my laptop to the converter then digital coaxial out to my Logitech Z5500, which is 5.1 capable. But the B mode doesn't seem to work.

Does the HDMI out cable have to be plugged in at both ends ? (This box to TV)
in order to have audio output from the 3.5 mini jack plug to rcas.
I have another brand that does and I want one that does not as I do not need the video out.
Only the audio out.

I am trying to find a way to take one of the 2 HDMI outputs from my AVR-X4400 to convert to stereo and broadcast through a Bluetooth transmitter. I can do it through zone two pre out if I convert the HDMI audio to PCM. Is there any device that can do it from the second HDMI output so I can keep the original surround mode on the AVR4400?? I was hoping this unit would be the answer.

No, you don't need the output of the HDMI cable for it to extract the Audio out via the coaxial 3.5mm or Optical.. Just the input HDMI. (mine works this way..)

My PC has a 4k GFORCE video card, I need to feed the 4K signal to this and split the audio signal so that I may plug OPTICAL or COAX out to my receiver and get DTS 7.1 Sound.
My receiver only takes HDMI 1.4a, that's why I need the 4K Signal going straight to the TV. Will this work with the 4K signal?

I have a Sony UDP-X800 Blue Ray player that is capable of playing SACD's. The Sony does NOT have an internal DAC, so I have an NAD d1050 external DAC. I have read that due to copyright protections, the Sony will only output standard CD specs (44.1) to an external DAC via the optical or coaxial connections. Therefore, I want to run an audio-only HDMI output from the Sony to my DAC, which, like most, does not have an HDMI input. Will this component allow me to feed the DAC a better-than-CD signal? The Sony does allow for the audio-only HDMI output to be configured to PCM rather the DSD data. Thank you.

I have the Sony connected to the DAC via a digital coaxial cable. When playing SACD's, the DAC only registers 44.1 (the standard CD resolution). I'm told this has to do with copyright protection. However, the Sony outputs its DSD via HDMI. I have a dedicated audio-only HDMI output on the Sony. Of course, the DAC does not have a HDMI input. My question is can I output the Sony to this device, then output from there into the DAC and get the higher resolution SACD signal? The Sony allows the user to configure the output on the audio-only HDMI output to PCM.

I have my ultra HD blu-ray player and Fire TV directly to the HDMI inputs on my Samsung K8000 TV with audio going from the HDMI ARC out on the TV to a Sonos Beam sound bar. I want to keep this setup but also add an old receiver with subwoofer and surround sound speakers - my question is can I hook the TV (HDMI ARC port) to the HDMI Input on this audio converter to split the audio signal between the sound bar (using HDMI ARC) and the optical input on my receiver?
Does anyone know if this will work? If not, is there a way to accomplish this? I want to use the TV OUT as an input and split the output between an HDMI cable and an optical cable so that I can use both sound systems simultaneously? Actually, if there is a way to do this with an HDMI input to the receiver that could work as well.

So [Slight delay] nice!
After three years without PC audio, I found this product to work with my hardware AND software. (my Video Card hijacks the audio, and no there really wasn't any fix you might suggest. #3yearsoftrying,see?)
This device does provide the audio, but there is a slight delay between visual and audible reception. It's super slight, but still detectable. I'd still buy again, but that's from a broke as *huck guy that has spent 3 years without PC/desktop sound.

Perfect for use with a Roku streamer & and external DAC/headphone amp
Once I hooked up my Roku streamer, I realized I could only use the TV speakers, or use its mini phone jack. [I don't have a HDMI Home Theater Receiver to grab the sound]. I have an external DAC and a headphone amplifier, so I decided to try to find something that would split off the digital sound stream from the HDMI.
I found the Monoprice HDMI Audio Converter, and liked the fact it had coaxial digital out, (as well as the Toslink optical digital out, that another model only had). It works great and sounds excellent with my high end headphones. Also purchase a HDMI cable and Coaxial cable from Monoprice.

Doesn't have 5.1
Unfortunately, this will not tell my laptop (through HDMI w/ Nvidia GTX 1060) that it will receive 5.1. It only still plays 2.0 stereo even when set to B setting. They have replaced the unit and still the same results. But when my laptop is connected to our pioneer receiver, 5.1 and 7.1 is enabled, but not this converter.
