I had received this today in the mail and was looking forward to finally being able to use my dreamcast with it. it simply just doesn't work at all with it, no matter what's done. it isn't the vga cable as that works perfectly fine when tested on an old monitor lying around, tested multiple hdmi cables so that's not the issue. when having it on, the picture flickers on and off slowly, making it worthless to have. looking around, I've heard this work with a person regarding the system but at the same time quite a few have the same issue I have. so with that said, i'm unsure if i ended up with a bad one or if this doesn't support the game system and the person that got it working has something else going on.

I bought this to connect my Dreamcast, via the VGA box, to an HDMI input on my TV and it worked right out of the box. I'm very happy with this product.

Just in case this assists any one else in the future, this box isn't compatible with the Dreamcast VGA output signal (480p 60Hz). Neither my TV (Samsung LED B6000) nor receiver (Onkyo TX-NR809) could interpret the HDMI signal coming out of the converter.

For what it's worth, the receiver's own VGA input couldn't receive the signal as well, yet the TV's VGA input could.

Does not work with my Panasonic TV.

Hooked up up using the simple instructions in the manual.
Ran through all the output settings, tried multiple HDMI input on the TV, tried multiple VGA sources.

RMA'd for a replacement,

New one is no different than the 1st. Could have bought a new video card for PC by now that supported HDMI.

Might stick to just cables from now on at Monoprice.

This thing is amazing! I got it for watching blu-ray from my laptop to my 37 Olevia lcd. There is no delay at all and the picture is crystal clear. Amazing that it can convert analog HD to digital HD in real time. This devise does not natively support wide screen so you MUST ENFORCE CUSTOM RESOLUTIONS at the native resolution of your tv to get 16x9 resolutions. This is very simple to do in the graphics drivers for both Nvidea and ATI card (Im not sure with Intel drivers). Some blu-ray movies seemed a little too dark, but that was nothing that couldnt be fixed in the graphics drivers.

For those people who couldnt get this to work. It was made for computers not cable boxes. You must adjust the custom resolution in the graphics drivers to not distort your picture as the devise isnt made to with the correct resolutions for 16x9 displays.

I was skeptical if this would work on a 720p plasma based on other reviews for 720p of other brands (i.e. Panasonic), but I gave it a shot. When I first tried plugging into my Insignia, no matter what the display resolution/refresh rate I got "mode not supported." I noticed the HDMI port on my TV was listed (on the actual TV screen) as HDMI/DVI where the other just said HDMI. So I tried changing it to the 1st HDMI port and it works perfectly. I put it back into the other HDMI port and it does not work (which looks the same and is not labeled differently on the back of the TV). Any other input (i.e. DVD player) works fine in that second HDMI input, so it is not the input.

I thought HDMI was HDMI, but apparently this adapter needs some other capability besides just HDMI (HDMI/DVI) and the Insignia has it on only 1 of its HDMI inputs.

CONS: on/off switch would be nice, only works on 1 of my HDMI inputs to my TV (the one that says on the TV: HDMI/DVI)

Attempting to go from VGA on computer to HDMI TV. Would not work no matter what resolution I selected on the TV. The TV displayed "not supported".

Monoprice readily offered a refund on this item, but they refused to pay return shipping since it was a "compatibility problem". If it won't work, it won't work. Is it compatibility or is it a defective device? I have no idea and I had to pay $15.00 to return it.

We tried all the standard VGA resolutions on 3 of our laptop PCs including 640x480,800x600,1024x768 and 1280x1024 to test with Toshiba 47 LCD TV. We can only get to see a flash of Windows XP booting screen and then the screen turns black without any picture.

save your money. don't buy this item. if you get stuck with a store credit...you actually pay for shipping again on whatever new item you get. basically...store credit means you lose about $10 in shipping in the next item.

CONS: went through 3 since july. they all went bad the exact same way. the picture becomes coarsely pixilated so that its practically unviewable.

I bought one of these about 2 years ago, and didn't get a chance to use it until about 6 months ago. When I connected it up to my computer VGA and my HDTV (very simple connection), I got no picture (black screen). So I contacted Monoprice to see if I could still get an exchange or refund, but they said it was too late. That's understandable. So I went ahead and purchased another one. same problem with the 2nd one. I called Monoprice support, and the person I on-line chatted with was no help, in fact they were kind of short with me. So here I am with 2 of these paperweights now. Monoprice has always been good to me until this. What happened Monoprice? Don't waste your $ on this item.

I received the adapter and had it running in 10 minutes. Straight out of the box with no changes necessary. I did take the precaution of emailing tech support to make sure the device would do what I needed it to do. My application was to use my new Mitsubishi 65" HDTV as a monitor for my laptop which had only a 15 pin XVGA external monitor output. I play Call to Duty, and it looks fantastic. I was playing in just a few minutes. I highly recommend calling or emailing to ensure the right device for the right application. It worked for me!

Decent product, I have been mostly pleased with it. Allowed me to keep my current VGA only HTPC on my HDMI display.

PROS: Good video conversion, plus decent stereo audio.

CONS: Slow switching video modes (not a huge issue, don't switch modes often, but you only have 3 seconds left on the Windows "do you want to keep this mode" dialog by the time there's a picture, so you have to be quick)
No Optical/Coax input for audio, most (even older) PCs have some kind of 5.1 or better output, but this box only has L/R RCA inputs for audio.

Does an excellent job of upconverting vga to and hdmi signal and the audio is flawless and syncs with the video.

I had a 2008 Dell desktop that was not compatible with the 2014 Sony flat screen that I purchased for a monitor. This converter was the answer and all is working as desired.

PROS: Very easy to set up.

Arrived promptly for Monoprice.

PROS: This device is a good solution if you only have a VGA port on your computer. It takes that signal and coverts it to a nice HDMI resolution.

CONS: It takes about 2 minutes to come up on the LCD screen if you are using a wireless solution.

This product was very satisfactory. It works as it is promised. A quality product. I would have enjoyed it more if the resolution was able to output 1080p, but as far as it goes, I am happy. I have this box hooked up to a 47 LCD TV at 1028 X 768 resolution. Image is very clear. I am able to use my TV as a monitor without problems. I dont have another converter to compare, but to me image is pretty good.

With the image at only 1028X768 resolution, the desktop seems a little cramped. Videos are very clear and sharp. Much improvement over the S-video connection. Compared to prices Ive seen for other converters, this is a very good value product.

P.s. Make sure you use a good SVGA cable with it. You may need the larger bandwith of SVGA vs. regular VGA.

Every Monoprice component in my setup above works as it was designed to, unless, there is a manufacture defect. Otherwise, everything works like a charm for me anyway.

People, please be patient. Just take your time to install and configure things properly.


PROS: Picture quality is very good. Text is well readable (comapare to S-Video solution) on the TV. No issues with sound either.

CONS: It would be nice to have this unit powered by USB 5V power cable off the PC, rather than by means of a power adapter.

Works great on my HP laptop with ATI Radeon 9000 under both Ubuntu Linux (9.04) and Windows 7. In both cases, set-up was plug and play, and I was able to use the screen configuration tool in both OSes to assign relative position and my desired resolution.

I'm using the converter to run video to an older 720p Phillips HDTV which doesn't have a vga in. Everything looks really great. No video/audio sync problems. Output from Boxee media player is awesome. I couldn't be happier. Monoprice beat the best deal I could find by 1/3rd, and the average price by _MUCH_ more.

There isn't much to say here the device works just like you'd want. Plug the computer in and connect it to a TV, and BAM!, you have magic HDMI connectivity complete with sound.

Having purchased an HDTV with only HDMI support, I was crushed to learn that my Dreamcast VGA output would not connect to the TV. Thankfully I found this adapter at a reasonable price AND it works great. Recommended for Dreamcasters.

This is just an FYI for anyone that owns a Panasonic Plasma HDTV....this unit is NOT compatible and will not work. I should have scrolled down to the bottom of the reviews because it seems like everyone else that owns a Panasonic had the same issue.

Worked flawlessly with a Swann DVR set to 1280x1024 out of the box, resolution seemed decent and no scaling issues. Next step is sending the signal across the Monoprice 4x4 HDMI matrix...fingers crossed!

I'm afraid that I cannot give an honest review of your product, because I cannot get it to work. I plugged the darn thing in as instructed and I can only get sound and no picture. I don't know if the thing is broken or is it me. I am a senior citizen and things with computers don't come that easily to me. I had visions of laying in my bed and being able to use my netbook on my tv. I bought wires and a wireless mouse and keyboards to accomplish this, but to no avail. can you help.

PROS: This converter allows me to view videos from my laptop (no HDMI port) on my large screen TV. HD video and audio quality are excellent.

I successfully used this product to connect a iMac G5 (PPC) via mini-VGA and Apple Audio/Video cables to a Panasonice Viera 42 Plasma display. The panasonic is only capable of 1024x768 (720p), but trying to drive the device at the televisions native resolution does not work for me. When I drive the device at 640x480, Im able to use the panasonic in either span screen or mirror mode. After connecting the device and plugging it in, I set the resolution of the second display (i.e., the Panasonic plasma) to 640x480 and allow the device to convert the signals to the Panasonic. Audio and video is quite fine, even for playing HD content (at non-HD resolution).

Its a good product at a fair price.

Unlike its less expensive counterpart (see my July 27, 2010 review of item 6191), this VGA to HDMI converter works properly in the following setup: a 1024x768 @ 60Hz VGA signal needing to be converted to HDMI for viewing on a 26" LCD TV (Sylvania). Considering we had to pay return shipping to get a refund on the first converter we tried, I would highly recommend going ahead and spending the extra $10 and buying this VGA to HDMI converter instead. It worked right out of the box.

PROS: This does exactly what it says. I love watching netflix on my tv now. I have a sanyo and it works great.

CONS: The picture only shows up partially on my screen. I have a 42 inch tv but it only displays it on about a 30 inch.

CONS: Got this Saturday, tried on six computers running Windows 7 and XP and did'n work on none of them, used different cables on all of the thinking could be the cables which I got from Monoprice could be the problem, I get the Bios and the computer logo and its black on all of them, its the first time I buy something from Monoprice and does not work.

This product does exactly what it should. Those poor reviews really do a disservice to what a great product this is. I used it on my old iBook that only had VGA to feed my HDMI based projector. If you know what you are doing, setup is a breeze.

Works fantastic! Takes my 15 pin VGA connection for my laptop along with the audio for my laptop and displays it through HDMI on my new television. You wouldn't even know it's streaming from a laptop. Video quality is great and it automatically adjusts to the resolution for borderless display.

Plugged it in and it spit out HDMI video. Doesn't get much easier.

I have had good luck with this company. They always get me the product I order in the time they say they will or less. Very responsive to questions.

I used this to hook my Sega Dreamcast with VGA box to my Sony 34XBR960 TV. Unfortunately, that model doesn't have a VGA port and my component inputs were maxed out.

The unit worked right out of the box and the picture and sound are both fantastic! I was really surprised that the sound worked. Picture quality looks just as great as it did when plugged directly into my monitors VGA port. (I did a comparison.) :)

Plugged it in. sent it signal, had a picture. Very happy.

Product is very lightweight so seems a little light on construction and plasticy. I have a "rattle" inside my unit however, it WORKS GREAT. I had no problems running this from my HP Laptop through my ONKYO HTS then out to my PHILIPS 48". I did play with resolution to get wht I thought was the ideal picture. Overall, very happy.

I purchased this converter to allow me to hook my PC up to my TV. It worked great right out of the box. I did not have to change any settings at all. Plugged all the inputs in and turned it on and there it was. Highly recommend this unit if you need to do the same as I.

Bought this specifically because others said it worked with the Dreamcast. I'd tried everything to get my Samsung LN40A550 to see the Dreamcast VGA out, tech support even denied that the TV supported 640x480, even though it was in the manual!

Next step was to try the much touted AA 9A60, but that was clunky, and more importantly, cut off the right 25% of the screen. Expensive junk!

Monoprice saves the day! Bought this little guy, and like other reviewers, kept getting no signal (light on for input, off for output), and the TV wouldn't see it. Nothing worked, even from laptop. Then switched from a 1.2 to a 1.3 HDMI cable, and more progress, but no dreamcast. Then, as a last ditch effort, instead of dreamcast-vga-this-hdmi-tv, I inserted a kvm I had lying around, making dreamcast-vga-kvm-this-hdmi-tv and it works perfectly!

9/10 cause I had to use the kvm to massage the dreamcast signal

This hdmi converter is great, very simple to hook up and ur done except for display adjustments on the computer to my 52" lcd.. The screen is perfect too, no distortions or anything, HD is very nice
