4x2 True Matrix High Speed HDMI® Powered Switch with Remote Control, 3D, and x.v.Color™ Support
If you're like most people, you have your home theater setup in one room, but have TVs in other rooms as well. This gives everyone in the house the ability to watch what they want, when they want. But what if the kids want to watch a DVD while you want to watch the big game in the living room with your friends? You can lug the DVD player to the other room for the kids, but a better solution is to use an this 4x2 HDMI® Mini Matrix Switch from Monoprice!
With this switch you don't need to move equipment from room-to-room, nor do you have to buy duplicate equipment for the other room. This matrix provides 4 HDMI inputs, which allows you to connect the Xbox 360®, cable box, blu-ray player, and the output from your Android phone. Any of these four inputs can be independently selected for either of the two outputs. Both displays can select the same or different inputs.
This matrix features an S/PDIF Digital Coaxial audio output via an RCA jack on the back of the unit. The Digital Coaxial output can be used simultaneously with the HDMI output on channel A (channel B does not support S/PDIF audio).
The switch includes a remote control, allowing direct selection of any of the inputs for each of the two outputs. It supports the full High Speed 1080p@60Hz HDMI video resolution, 3D video, Deep Color up to 36-bits, and x.v.Color. Additionally, it supports high definition multichannel audio, including Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master Audio™. The matrix is powered by an included 5 VDC, 2A AC adapter. The four input and two output HDMI ports are gold plated to ensure smooth, corrosion-free connections.

PROS: Bought this 4X2 Matrix Switch mainly for use with my new Optoma HD33 3D projector. I have DIRECTV H21 receiver and a Samsung 3D HD Blue Ray player connected to the input ports of the switch. I am using Monoprice high speed HDMI cables for connecting the devices. The outputs of the Switch are fed to a Panasonic 50" plasma 720P HDTV and the Optoma HD33 3D projector ( a great product for 3D home theater). The switch works great. I can switch output to the two displays independently without any problem when both the sources are on (there is a slight delay when switching, not surprisingly!). The 3D signals from both the Samsung 3D player and the DIRECTV 3D channels are easily handled by the switch. However, there is a small problem. If you want to watch 3D content on the 3D display device (in my case Optoma HD33 projector), all the regular non 3D sources and sinks (Displays) must be off. Also, you can not switch to 3D content in the middle of watching regular non 3D DIRECTV channels or Blue Ray player. You will have to turn off those sources and the Switch and turn the Switch back on to watch the 3D content. This is a very minor problem for me. May be Monoprice will fix this in some future product release. But, it was not a serious enough problem for me to take away any stars from the product, hence the 10 stars. As someone has remarked, the product looks fabulous. The picture shown on the site does not do justice to the actual look. The price, considering the functionality, wow!
CONS: Probably needs some tweaking when handling both 3D and non-3D content simultaneously.
Inputs to Video switch:
1x Xbox 360
1x HD PVR
1x PC/Media Server
Outputs from this device:
1x Logitech Z-5500 5.1 audio system via SPDIF Coax Audio.
1x 52 Inch Samsung TV
1x 24 Inch Samsung Monitor
It rarely happens that a product does more than what its manufacturer advertises (usually it is the other way round). This switch is one such rarity.
In my setup, I have four sources (directv receiver, PS3, Oppo Bluray Player and an HTPC) that need to go to 3 displays. One of the displays (Samsung LCD TV) is another room. The other two displays (JVC projector and ASUS monitor) are in the same room as the sources and connected through a Denon Receiver. The 4 sources go into this HDMI 4x2 switch, one output goes to the TV in the other room (over a 20ft HDMI cable) and the other output goes into the Denon receiver (which then feeds the signal to the projector and monitor).
First I bought the other HDMI switch from here (PID 5312) but straightaway ran into a problem. Since one of the displays connected to the switch (Samsung TV) supports only stereo input, the switch would send stereo sound to the receiver too. It did not matter whether the TV was on or not or if different sources were being switched to the two outputs. To be able to send HD audio (or even Dolby/DTS 5.1) to the receiver, I would need to disconnect the TV from the switch and then power-cycle it. Basically a problem that can not be "lived with". So I contacted the Monoprice tech support and asked if there was any switch that can solve my problem. I was told there is no such switch available and I'll have to look at some other solution. Anyway, I noticed this switch had individual power control for the two outputs, so thought of giving it a try (hoping that at least when the output for TV is turned off, it might be able to send HD audio to the receiver). Checked with tech support about it and they said no it won't work. Anyway I had already ordered it so no harm in giving it a try.
The switch arrived and I hooked up all the connections. To my amazement, even with the TV on, this switch was sending HD audio to my receiver. I thought I might have connected something incorrectly, but no everything was correct and the switch can actually send different audio formats to the two outputs at the same time (i.e. only when switching 2 different sources to the two outputs). This is just opposite of what the item description says and even what the user manual says. Of course when the same source is sent to the 2 outputs simultaneously, it would fall to stereo audio which is perfectly reasonable. But as soon as you switch one of the outputs to another source it starts sending the best audio quality supported by each display.
It does sometimes need to be reset to be able to sync properly, but not often enough to be a big problem. That is a really small issue compared to the problem it has solved for me.
For anyone with a similar requirement as mine, I don't think there would be a better switch out there even at many times the price.
Its a nightly routine in my house where I lay down in bed to watch something and have to run back and forth from my rack to my bedroom to see if the picture will show up.
PROS: The price is great for the stated specification. it has a nice slim form factor. Remote control has discreet commands for each selection. Metal Chassis.
CONS: Each time we go to watch video there is no signal. We are using Monoprices Cabernet Ultra 2 HDMI cables which are meant to have a signal correction correction chip. We have to go to the back of unit and hit rest and wait and most time the picture is restored. Sometime we press the reset button multiple times to get both picture and audio.
Long story short, this current switch functions without issue. Laptop can switch back and forth between TV and monitor and recognizes each properly. There are no longer sound issues with the cable box. Great product, get this if you don't feel like dropping $600 on a real receiver with 2 outputs.
PROS: Compatible with all my devices, previous switch (PID 5312) was not.
Successfully passes PC signal to devices with different native resolution.
Input switch time faster than previous switch.
CONS: Someone mentioned that this product is able to switch inputs without interruption to both outputs. My switch blanks both outputs when switching inputs. Not a big deal as it seems all the switches sold here exhibit this behavior.
PROS: great concept, when it is on it works really well, good quality and flexibility
CONS: have to reset the unit every time i turn on the TV in order to get a signal on one of the outputs. This is the second try, I returned the first one I had for the same reason...Tech support no help. Its really a deal breaker since I have to go into my equipment closet every time i want to turn on my TV.
PROS: the box just works.....right out of the box
i plugged it in and was working a few minutes later
When you change the input on Output A - it will reset output B as well - and vice versa. Not a big deal, just a bit annoying
PROS: Very easy to use and install. Fits well into my Entertainment cabinet. Small and compact!!!
CONS: Every time I go to turn on TV the switch needs to be reset every time. Which means unplugging the unit then plugging it back in. Then takes up to 15seconds for the switch to become active and start working again. I have read the reviews and the cables I am using are the best. They are long cables but I paid top dollar for them because they are behind the wall on a new construction.
PROS: Works as advertised
Superb picture quality
Never had to reset
CONS: IR controller must be pointed at unit to work
No auto switching
..but very small almost insignificant cons..
A free firmware update sent to me by Mitsubishi did not fix the "handshake" issue. At my wits end I came upon these hdmi switches/splitters. Skeptical, I purchased this device from Monoprice and am extremely happy it worked!!! Initially, I tried the splitter option having the bluray player as one of the "in" devices and the tv and receiver hooked up to both output ports. It split the signal successfully, but I could only get mono stereo outputting from the receiver.
Disappointed, I plugged the bluray into the receiver via hdmi and plugged the receiver into input 1 via hdmi. The tv was connected to ouput A via hdmi. Crossing my fingers, I popped in Transformers and turned it all on.....Success!!! 1080p to the tv and Dolby HD out of the receiver!!!! I don't know why or how this device was able to make my tv and receiver talk to each other when a direct hdmi connection wouldn't work but I am so happy!!!! My fiance is happy now too. I can re-focus on our wedding plans! Thank you Monoprice for a great device!
One other note I am using Monoprice hdmi 3' and 6' cables in different colors for my connections. Very pleased with those as well although I recommend using 6' cables over the 3' lengths. Easier to work with especially when having to pull out your equipment to switch stuff around. LOVE MONOPRICE!
PROS: -Discreet size
-Blends in with other hardware
-Easy to setup
-Best pricing I've seen for all the features built into this device!
-Splitter feature works as well as the Switch functions
CONS: -None, this device rocks!!!
Display port from laptop converted into HDMI may be necessary or but is an acceptable hack
You CAN use this switch to switch between your laptop and your PC.
If you connect your LAPTOP via 1 cable to INPUT 1, you can send that DESKTOP to EITHER OUTPUT 1 OR 2.
If you send it to BOTH OUTPUT 1 and 2 it will DUPLICATE the DESKTOP (when you move your mouse on one it will move on the other).
If your laptop has TWO OUTPUTS you can connect your LAPTOP via 2 cables to INPUT 1 AND INPUT 2, you can send those DESKTOPS to either OUTPUT 1 OR 2 (ONLY WAY TO USE DUAL MONITORS).
If your laptop has TWO OUTPUTS AND you still want to easily switch between your laptop and your PC, use OPTION 2 AND connect 2 cables from your PC to INPUTS 3 and 4.
When you want to use the LAPTOP, set OUTPUT 1 to INPUT 1 AND OUTPUT 2 to INPUT 2.
When you want to use the PC, set OUTPUT 1 to INPUT 3 AND OUTPUT 2 to INPUT 4.
