Does the remote need a clear line of sight to the switch to work? This will be enclosed in the center pedestal of a conference room table (connected to 6 table insert HDMI jacks above).

BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question. Yes the remote will need a clear line of sight for it to function properly. We would recommend product # 9194 as a solution for items that need to be in an enclosed location with no line of sight. I hope this helps, and of course if you have any more questions feel free to contact us!

    Mostly works
Fortunately, I've only had one device that this switch didn't like... the other dozen or so I've connected have worked fine, even when connected over a long cable. The one device it didn't like was a laptop, so it wasn't the end of the world it might have even been a software issue.

What I really don't like, though, is that the switch won't let you select an input when the connected source isn't active. When I press Input 5 on the remote, I expect it to select Input 5, no matter whether the signal on that input is alive yet or not. This makes using the switch with a Logitech Harmony remote control difficult often a device hasn't been fully powered on when the Harmony sends the command to select an input, so the switch just ignores it. It would be nice if there was a way to disable this "feature."

Also, the auto input select feature infuriates me as well. I don't want it switching over to my Roku because my Xbox is installing an update and its HDMI output shuts off for a fraction of a second in the middle of rebooting. It's another feature I wish I could turn off. My remote is smart enough to manage switching inputs I don't need a switch that tries to be handle this on its own, messing things up in the process.

PROS: Works with nearly every device I've connected to it.

CONS: It won't let you select an input that isn't currently active.

The auto switching "feature" is infuriating, as it will switch away from a source you're watching if the connected device is rebooted or powered off, even for a fraction of a second. I'd rather it only switch sources when I tell it to.

Was exactly as shown, a great must have to give yourself some more HDMI ports to plug in all the items you can collect. Games, dvd, bluray, all handled without a problem. A real asset to your home theater needs & wants list. I highly recommend Monoprice & this powered HDMI switcher

PROS: It does just exactly what it is suppose to do, and it does iit great. PS3, BluRay,HD-DVD, and 2 400 disc Sony DVD's , all without a hitch.Only had 3 options on the back of Mistubishi but now I have plenty!
You will want this to grow your options too.

CONS: OH how the lights are bright. And with no way to dim or turn them off, I came up with my own solution. I used a hole punch on electrical tape and made 95% or better coverage of the lens, and its not bad at all now. It gives just enough glow to see what its connecting to, although its never made a mistake you could block them completely I suppose. Only flaw, well I can live with that.

Installation was the switch feeding a 25' run to a HDMI splitter that then ran lengthy distances over cat6 converters to four outputs. I had tried several lower-cost switchers that, when placed in line, would not work (although a single feed would). After researching and reading about this unit, I decided to attempt to use it. To my pleasant surprise, it worked "first time, out of the box", with none of the many headaches I had with the previous switches.

Shipping and packaging was fast too. Very happy with this purchase at this point.

    PROS: Works!

I'm normally quite satisfied with MonoPrice products, but this one didn't meet my expectations.

First the LEDs are two bright and I'm annoying by the red LED constantly flashing below the selected input. I'll try installing black electrical tape over the LEDs... hopefully that will help!

Second, the 'User manual' (a single sheet double sided 8 1/2") was obviously not written or checked by someone who speaks English as it's poorly written and full of grammatical errors. It also fails to explain what some of the buttons on the remote do.

Finally, I find it VERY annoying that the switch falls back to other inputs (normally Input 1) if you happen to reboot the device connected to the active input.

    PROS: 8 inputs.

Works with Logitech Harmony (supposedly - not tested yet)

    CONS: Annoying blinking red LED

    Poorly written instruction sheet

Falls back to other inputs if connected device is reset while input is active

I have two DVD changers, a Blu Ray, an HD-DVD and a standalone DVD player hooked up to 5 of the 8 inputs. So far no issues. A great deal for a good product.

Can't beat it for the price
Works exactly as advertised. I like the "old style" remote with real buttons no membrane switches. I would prefer if the LEDs were a little dimmer, but at least they're not flashing. A great value!

This is working out pretty well as an accessory to my HT receiver. I don't particularly need any of the latest HDMI additions like 3D, CEC, ARC, etc. I've had to play around to see which input devices are compatible, but that's more a result of the pathetic HDMI specifications than a problem with the switch. So far, I've expanded the 4 HDMI inputs on my receiver to handle 8 devices with more room for expansion.

    PROS: Lots of inputs.

CONS: Bright blinking LEDs that can't be turned off. They also can't be covered easily.

Not compatible with all HDMI input devices (nothing is).

    Long Term User

PROS: I have used this unit for over 3 years now. Mounted it in a rack and its performance has been excellent! I have eight devices plugged into it, and it makes life so much easier. Of course you could spend a good chunk of coin and buy a new AVR with 7-8 HDMI ports now to do the same thing. Now if we can get Monoprice to do a 8x2 matrix switcher.:)

CONS: Can't get another remote for unit from Monoprice if you were to lose it.

I bought this to upgrade from the Monoprice 5x1 switch because I need more ports. It works well although I had to re-arrange my equipment to accommodate the large size. The switch is heavy enough to stay put even with many cables plugged in (which was an issue with the 5x1 switch). The blinking red light was annoying enough that I ended up covering them up with electrical tape.

PROS: Works perfectly with all of my devices: Xbox-360, PS3, SageTV HD300, Boxee Box, PVR, laptop. Works with Harmony remote. Heavy enough to stay put with cables plugged in.

CONS: Lights are little bright, wouldn't be so bad if the red one didn't keep blinking.

Works Good and Easy to Use
Overall, this is a great unit for the price. Commercial units cost much more than this one. Well thought out in that you can see with status lights, the HDMI sources that you have turned on and are active. A bright red light indicates which position is selected. Provided this unit holds up over time, it appears to be an awesome package for the price.

PROS: Easy to use with large buttons that give a status as to HDMI items that are active and a red light indicating the one selected going out. The status lights are extremely useful in telling what items are turned on and active, as well as the one you have selected to send out. Quality of the unit appears to be better than expected. Good value for the price. Includes rack mount which was very nice and was handy. It also has rubber feet on the bottom of the unit for table mounting.

CONS: The holes in the rack mount ears are not machined correctly, and take some effort to get them to tighten up. The holes are not lined up and so it is hard to keep a screw straight when tightening the rack ears up to the rack. That was very aggravating and it made you want to drill the holes out bigger in order for it to fit correctly. Still, for the price and to include rack mount ears as an option, is very good.
