3-inch Powered Portable Monitor Speakers with Protective Grill (pair)
With the prevalence of computer based music editing solutions, there is a greater need than ever for a great sounding set of small, shielded speakers, such as these 3-inch Powered Portable Monitor Speakers from Monoprice!
These monitor speakers are designed to produce a flat frequency response, which makes them perfect for use by audio professionals or anyone else looking for true and accurate audio reproduction. Powered by a built-in audio amplifier, these monitors can be used anywhere AC power is present, while magnetic shielding ensures that they will not interfere with computer monitors or television displays.
The master speaker contains the controls, connections, and built-in 30 watt amplifier (15 watts/channel). It connects to an audio source using L/R stereo RCA jacks. A 3.5mm jack on the front allows you to connect a pair of headphones, which disables the speaker output. Another 3.5mm jack on the front allows connection of an auxiliary audio source. A Bass Boost switch on the back of the speaker increases low-frequencies by 3dB, for improved volume and greater bass presence. The second speaker connects to the first using standard speaker wire.
The tweeter is a 1" silk cone design with magnetic shielding and internal damping. The 3" paper cone woofer is coated in polypropylene to produce a flexible, but incredibly strong, speaker that is capable of both accurate reproduction and loud volume levels. The woofer is magnetically shielded and uses a high-temperature voice coil, so it won't fail under heavy use. The drivers are covered with a protective grill, making them easier to transport and better for use in rough environments.

I see others have had the same problem (Reviewer: Steven M Wall from Olathe, KS)
PROS: Great sound when it worked well.
CONS: The left speaker is now 20% as loud as the right speaker. Tried switching the sound card on my computer and replacing the wire from the speaker to the computer. Still, I have to have the computer set the sound in the right speaker at 20% and the left speaker at 88% for normal sound. REally a problem.
I have been a heavy user of Monoprice products for many years. I suspect the problem is in the hardware portion of the powered speaker on the left.
That is... until 3 weeks later, the unit simply won't turn on anymore.
I checked all the cables and re-setup the unit, changed the outlet, used auxiliary as well as RCA but the unit simply won't turn on. Mind you, once setup, I did not move around the speakers or mess with them at all. I'm extremely saddened by this failure and I hope this unit is one of the few defective ones.
As of right now, it is difficult for me to recommend due to its questionable durability.
PROS: Sounded great, small enough for any space, sufficient input/output, simple setup
CONS: Stopped working after less than a month of light usage. Unit won't turn on anymore
PROS: Clean sound, more than adequate built-in amp. Very convenient front-mounted volume control, aux input, and headphone jack. Solidly built. Excellent overall, especially for the price. Shielding seems to do the job.
CONS: Larger than typical PC satellite speakers used on 2.1 systems so take up more space on your desk (but sound good enough that I don't miss the sub from the system these replaced).
PROS: Great sound for the money! Good looking on desk.
CONS: Not at this price.
PROS: great sound
CONS: the left speaker is now 20% as loud as the right speaker. Tried switching the sound card on my computer and replacing the wire from the speaker to the computer. Still, I have to have the computer set the sound in the right speaker at 20% and the left speaker at 88% for normal sound. REally a problem
PROS: Sounded good when they worked.
CONS: One speaker no longer works after 18 months.
PROS: Okay sound (nothing remarkable though) while they lasted.
CONS: Bad quality build leads to problems shortly after warranty expires.
PROS: Great sound, great features, nice size and they are very nice looking speakers. Plenty of inputs. They also came with sticky pads you can put under the speakers to ensure they do not scratch any surface they are placed on.
CONS: I'm not familiar with the terminology, but the cables used to link the speakers aren't normal RCA cables, you actually have to put the cable in through the clamps instead of just plugging them in. So far though, this hasn't been any problem (though having a normal RCA cable to use for this would have been nice).
