Premium 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Subwoofer

While superb sound quality is the ultimate goal of any home audio system, the realities of budget and even aesthetics often force compromises in sound quality. Well, the time for compromise is over. Now you can have it all - great sound, great looks, small size, and an unbelievably low price!

The Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System surpasses all expectations for sound quality in a small package. The four satellite and the single center speakers each use a 3" polypropylene mid-range driver and a 3/4" aluminum dome tweeter. They can handle up 100 watts of power and have an impedance of 8 ohms.

The satellite and center channel speakers handle frequencies from 110Hz to 20kHz ±3dB, with the crossover between the mid-range and tweeter drivers set to 3.5KHz. The powered subwoofer features an 8" downward firing speaker driven by a 200 watt amplifier. It handles frequencies from 30Hz to 150Hz (-10dB) and uses a variable crossover from 40-150Hz.

The satellites measure only about 6.9" x 4.3" x 4.3" (HWD) and weigh about 2.9 lbs each, making them easy to mount almost anywhere. The center channel speaker measures about 4.3" x 10.2" x 4.3" (HWD) and weighs 3.0 lbs. Both the satellite and center speakers are equipped with a universal 1/4" threaded insert mounting options and have rear-firing ports, so they sound best when there is some breathing room behind them.

The subwoofer is a 12.6" cube and weighs about 20 lbs. It features four large rubber feet, which keep the downward firing driver off the floor. It includes both line and speaker level stereo inputs, so it can be used with any amplifier. A phase control switch on the back allows you to adjust the phase of the subwoofer in relation to the rest of the system.

So when looking for speakers for your home audio system, make the no compromise choice and enjoy superb sound quality and a stunning sound stage with the Monoprice Premium 5.1-Channel Home Theater System!

Attractive speaker with good sound. Uncommon Threads
Attractive speaker with good sound. The mounting holes are NOT 1/4-20 threads. They are 1/4-28. Keep that in mind when purchasing a mount. The thread size is not in the product description or the product literature. I found that frustrating.

Glad I listened to the reviews!
I am not an audiophile (yet). But I did want to improve my sound quality for my TV and movies consumption. Boy did these speakers deliver! I bought these about a month ago and the sound has gotten better and better with each day of breaking them in. Movies, TV, and music sound great.

I paired these speakers with the Yamaha RX-V379BL 5.1 receiver. They seem to be a great match. Yamaha seems to have plenty of juice to drive these speakers.

Speakers were very easy to wire and setup. I used either banana plugs or pins where applicable (personal preference).

I see a lot of negative comments talking about the lack of RCA wire for the subwoofer. I didn't deduct a point because they clearly list the bill of materials on the website and downloadable pdf manual. Note that rather than simply buy splitter adapter and introduce multiple connections I bought a mediabridge RCA Y-adapter (8 feet) from the other guys. This is working great for me.

For speaker stands I bought the Atlantic Satellite 77305018 from the other guys as well. These stands seem to work great. Go as high as 4 feet, and has excellent cable management built in. I am giving tid bits on other stuff i paired this with because that was the biggest challenge I faced while shopping.

    PROS: Easy install

    Clean look

Amazing sound! - rediscovering my favorite movies

CONS: Not the most attractive version of their logo. But I bought this for sound not looks so doesn't impact rating.

    Small size big performance
Definitely a set for smaller rooms. Don't buy it for the price buy it because it fits in almost anywhere and still provides great sound. And then go ahead and buy it for the price anyway, because you'll be saving a ton of money. This is definitely not a set that's designed to excel in any particular area. They're designed to be great all-around speakers and remain very affordable.

The matched fronts and surrounds are smaller than expected, but with a satisfying heft to them that makes them feel quite sturdy. Center channel speaker is about average size compared to a discount store HTIB system, but you won't mistake it for a discount store speaker. Build quality on all speakers far exeeds their class. Even without the sub, this is a set that is far better than it has any right to be at this price point. The finish could best be described as unobjectionable these speakers won't draw oohs and aahs for how flashy they are, but they also won't draw comments about how cheap they look. In short, these are the kind of speakers that you simply won't notice, but you'll definitely hear the sound.

I discovered that one of my sound sources was simply horrible based on listening through these, and I had never noticed the low quality before. A quick test though high quality headphones proved it was the source and not the speakers. My previous HT speakers simply never revealed how bad that source was. This Monoprice set has crisp, clear highs and deeper, punchier lows than you would expect. The comparatively tiny size means you can place them practically anywhere because it's easy to find room for them.

The real gem of this set is the sub. It isn't the world's greatest, loudest, deepest sub, and it isn't trying to be. It is, though, well matched to its companion speakers, and seamlessly steps in to pick up the low tones where its mates fall short. Definitely more musical in caliber than something to shake the walls, but it still provides more punch than you'll be prepared for. If you want the very deepest lows and to feel a thud in your chest during explosions on screen, this is not the sub you're looking for. If you want something that can deftly switch from various styles of music over to a nice sounding explosion machine, this is your new friend.

Don't force this set to be something it's not, and it will reward you with great sound and few compromises. For something that will fill your spacious loft or your open floor plan great room with the kind of sound that will make your guests jump in surprise, move along to your next choice. If you're looking for a decent sounding set of speakers that will fit into a bedroom or small apartment and not punish you by sounding only slightly better than the speakers built into your TV, this set from Monoprice is a wonderful value and a no-brainer purchase.

PROS: * Small enough to fit almost anywhere

    * Sound like you paid far more

    * Appearance is understated but not cheap looking

    * Take off the fabric grilles and most will never guess they're Monoprice

    * Easy to drive, so your AVR won't strain a bit

CONS: * Small speakers cannot provide the expanse of sound provided by larger speakers

    * No five-way binding posts, slightly limiting your choices

    * Rear port is high enough that if stand mounting, the port may be covered by the bracket

    Defective after a year
Worked ok for about a little over a year. Then one of the satellite speakers started to make a terrible buzzing noise. I swapped the speaker to different channels with same result, so it was definitely a defect with the speaker. Only a one year warranty so Amazon/Monoprice refused to fix. Would NOT purchase this system again or recommend it to anyone.

    PROS: Great sound

CONS: defective speaker after a year

    10565 VS 8247
This review covers both the Monoprice 10565 (Premium Sound System) and the Monoprice 8247 sound system. This review assumes the 10565 is approximately double the price of the 8247 (as was so when purchased).

    Current Setup:

I recently purchased a new house and in doing so wanted to quickly setup a inexpensive home theater room. I was able to create a very nice setup using a Vizio 70" E701i-A3 as well as the Monoprice 10565. The picture is excellent and the sound is very, very good. I highly recommend this setup. My theater room is large with a 25' ceiling cathedral which does not appear to impact the 10565's ability to perform.

    Previous experience:

Of my previous theater systems the best I had was a Bose Acoustimass 10 Series III. It was a decent though pricey theater system which I had to sell while moving. I wanted something that sounded better than or at least equivalent to the experience. The 10565 fits the bill quite nicely, I'd say it is slightly better than the Bose system, which is great because it's 200/1000 = 1/5 of its cost. The Bose does have a better aesthetic appeal and excellent build quality, if I were to close my eyes and listen to both systems, I am confident I would choose the Monoprice premium speakers over the Bose. They have a much better range and can get very loud with little distortion.

    Monoprice 10565 VS 8247:

For this comparison I used the exact same setup (wire, placement, receiver, room). You can see it in the pictures below.

I loved the home theater experience of the 10565 so much and I wanted to try the same brand in another room. I frequently listen to music and play games in my office/loft area, so I decided a 5.1 system should work nicely there as well. I had considered buying another 10565 as they're not too expensive, however the speakers are quite large and I wasn't sure I wanted them on my desk. I also felt the system would never be fully utilized (volume) and would be a waste of potential. I decided to try out the 8247 in hopes that it was a smaller shaped system that was capable of producing quality though quieter sound.

This is somewhat the case. The system does produce similar sound, though not as good. The sounds from this system have a much boomier bass (less range) and the sidelights are slightly colder with a tin like sound. It isn't bad sound, but it isn't great like the 10565, which was to be expected given its price-point. The shape of the speakers was also somewhat disappointing, as they are nearly the same size. Though it is a matter of opinion, they look much less appealing to the eye. In short, the 8247 offers no advantage (to me) to the 10565 other than price.

    More on the 10565:

This is a great system, read all the other reviews about it. They are spot on. I paired mine with a Onkyo tx-nr525 and it sounds great. I also used VideoSecu 5 brackets from Amaz*n to mount. 16 Gauge wire.

    More on the 8247:

I purchased this system because I had read all the stellar reviews and was expecting more than what I received. I tried multiple placement configurations in my office with these speakers but could not find one I liked. No matter how hard I tried you could easily tell where the sound was coming from, it's very sharp and directional. When you tilt your head you almost become dizzy from the sound, it's very odd. The room is fairly large and square. I decided to try these speakers in the place of my home theater setup (same wire/placement/receiver) and they did sound much better than in my office. I believe these speakers need to be quite a distance from your head to blend together better. (In my office they were about 6-8' from my head. Another annoyance is the subwoofer in this system. The auto on function is poorly implemented (requires loud bass to turn on) and when it is on it constantly hums (I've tried multiple wires/speakers that do no impact other systems).

    Conclusion:

I really, really, like the 10565. I feel underwhelmed by the 8247. If you're looking to buy either set, I would definitely recommend going with the more expensive model. I feel the cost of the upgrade is minimal (after buying a receiver, speaker wire, etc) considering the performance increase. Perhaps if you only owned the 8247 you would never be the wiser.

    tldr: Buy the 10565.

    tiny MONSTER!
I can't say enough about this system. It is outstanding in every aspect of music, movies, surround programs. Had this system been available years ago, I would have three of them! Monoprice recommends the splitter for the sub. I installed it when I set-up the system and like I said, "Outstanding."

PROS: Great bass, mids and treble! The balance between them is very accurate and complimentary of each other. The sub is outstanding! This small system is Exceptional in every way!

CONS: I wish there were 2 more speakers for a 7.1 receiver.

    SWEETNESS !!!!
When i connected these up with 14 gauge speaker wire (2791), and tipped the ends with [Banana plugs...receiver side i used (9437) satelite speaker side i used the (9438)]

SONIC BLISSFULNESS ....The Clarity of each speaker was mind blowing to me..

PROS: The sound quality was tremendous..Couldn't be happier.

CONS: Cant think of any besides having to go to the Ace Hardware to get the proper screw size to mount the speakers in speaker mounts that Monoprice sales.. i had to buy a 1/4 inch x 20 thread size screws to fit the holes in the back of the satelites..

    The Speakers are Faily Good.
Overall the set is pretty solid, so long as my next center speaker doesn't sound the same way, I'd give this a 5/5

PROS: All the satellite speakers worked perfectly as well as the subwoofer. Do note that you will have to get a y splitter for the subwoofer if your AVR does not support RCA L/R.

CONS: My center speaker was not working correctly. It was faulty. Once loud scenes came up the speaker would start to sound staticky as well as the treble and bass on it were bad. I think I just got a bad speaker and already got an RMA for it.

Great Speakers for the Money.....while they last
The front two speakers blew out while I was running them with a 50 watt amp each... I don't know why that would happen if they are rated to be able to handle up to 100 watts. Soon after I contacted Monoprice and let them know of the issue. They quickly resolved it however, the two front speakers that they replaced them with are used items. They DO NOT sound like the originals. CONSTANT CONSTANT RATTLING. After all the good things that I have heard about Monoprice, I do not think I would purchase anything other than cables from them anymore. If I could go back, I would save my money and invest on a good 2 speaker set.

PROS: Great Bang for Your Buck Satellite Speakers

CONS: DO NOT LAST probably why it is only a one year warranty.

    Great speaker system
Solid construction and great sound. Comparable to systems costing hundreds more. Paired with a Demon ARV 1613 and it sounds great in a 20x23 room.

    PROS: Sound and value.

    CONS: None so far.

Can I pair this with Sony STRDN1070?
    New User U on Jan 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have my home theater system paired with a mid-level Denon so I can't answer with 100% certainty but, from my research on receivers, I would have to think the Sony is quite similar so you should get excellent results. (Be sure to use quality speaker wire. I upgraded to Choice Series 12 AWG from Monoprice and the improvement was quite noticeable.)
Can the rear surround speakers be mounted on the wall, even though they have a rear firing port? If so, how? How much "breathing room" do you recommend for the surround speakers if not mounted on the wall?
    A shopper on Nov 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: To mount the speakers on a wall you will need sometype of mounting system that takes advantage of the 1/4 " mounting hole on the back. The mounting system that you use will hold the speaker off the wall. I just looked in my manual for these speakers and I didn't see anything about for a distance from wall. My mounts hold them off about 3".
