1.5ft Premium 2 RCA Plug/2 RCA Plug M/M 22AWG Cable - Black
Despite the introduction of more advanced audio and video signal cables, such as HDMI® and Toslink, most audio and a large number of video connections still use the common RCA connector.
This is a premium two-channel audio cable made of RG-59 75 ohm coaxial cable. The cable uses a 22AWG conductor and is shielded to prevent EMI or RFI interference from entering your audio system. The connectors are gold plated, for smooth connections and to prevent corrosion. Each connector head features embedded, color-coded rubber rings to ensure a firm grip when installing or removing the cable.

This cable is much thicker than my previous cable. The tips are gold-plated, which is also an upgrade for me. The connectors are pretty stiff, but I don't plan on connecting/unconnecting them much - but if I do have to, they'll go - again just stiff. But better to be stiff than too loose and fall out (although that would be easily fixable by a bit of crimping!).
Now...why 6 out of 10? Well, one of the sets of this cable is perfect. However, the other set arrived broken. The positive connector on one of the ends of the red cable has a loose connection somewhere inside, even though it looks physically perfect on the outside. I can't fix it.
I suppose I could return this cable but considering I'd have to pay for return shipping, it's probably cheaper and easier simply to order a new one for roughly 2 bucks - especially if I'm ordering other cables at the same time (to defray the shipping cost).
I have used Monoprice for several orders over the past several months and this is the first time I have received a bad cable. But I have received so many other cables from Monoprice, all of which are perfect...and even one of these that I ordered was perfect! I'm not completely surprised that after so many cables, I finally got a bad one - it's almost expected - and again it's not a deterrent (especially since it was on a $2 cable - if this happened on a more expensive cable, then I'd seek out the return process).
So all in all, I'm still happy. Read my other reviews they're all 10's. I'm still a Monoprice faithful customer.
It's a bit stiff, which is fine. Longer ones tend to be less firm.
I chose it because of the shorter length, which I prefer.
One for a 6 CD changer/player to the receiver and one for the FiOS box to the receiver
A nice little piece of information I figured out: You can run HDMI from the FiOS box to the TV and then still use the red and white RCA outputs to connect to older receivers that don't have Optical or S/PDIF like mine. You don't even have to play with any settings on the FiOS box to do it, it just works.
PROS: Work great and the sound is very clear
Just the right length
CONS: The connectors are pretty tight to get on, but they'll definitely stay where they are after that. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the boxes that these are connected to on top fell off and these stopped it from hitting the ground.
If you notice your inputs or backplate pushing in while trying to connect - STOP - and return them. You run the risk of damaging your gear by applying too much force.
PROS: Decent quality. Short 1.5' length is good for short connections behind a mixer to a sound card, etc.
CONS: Prongs are unnecessarily too thick causing too much force needed to slide onto the inputs.
Looking at the way the RCA connector is constructed, it is easy to see why they became loose. The outer ring of the connector is comprised of 6 "petals" that are angled inwards toward the center. However the petals themselves are constructed of rather flat pieces of metal, so they have very little structural rigidity. It is easy for the petals to flex outward, thus loosening the connection.
Most cables that you get included with your audio gear either have a full circle instead of the 6 petals, or they have 4 petals. Having 4 petals instead of 6 means each petal has more of an arc to it, and is thus much harder to bend.
I would like to see Monoprice reduce the number of petals on their RCA connectors to 4.
Or perhaps Monoprice just got a bad batch from their supplier. I did notice that the connectors on my cable do not match the ones in the photograph. They are very close, but in the photo, you can see that the inside edge of the connector is beveled. Mine is not beveled, and appears to be made of much thinner metal. In other words, there does not appear to be enough metal there to put a bevel on. The petals in the close-up photo are much thicker than the ones I actually received.
PROS: Excellent quality cable, but...
CONS: While the RCA connectors were somewhat tight to begin with (although not the tightest I've used), they loosened up very quickly during auditioning of several pre-amps. Now they are so loose that they are very easily removed. How easy? So easy that I could not attach just one of the pair of connectors on a cable. I would insert the left connector, then when I tried to position the right connector, the left would slide off. Only way I could get them to stay was to insert both at the same time.
PROS: The length. They are color coded.
CONS: The outer jacket sections are too fat. It's a tight squeeze getting the cable's conductors into the right hole. Often two hands are needed to keep one end from popping off because of the stiffness.
Also the cable tension is high and has a tendency to loosen the input jacks. A few times that's happened. I've had mine for almost a year and they never softened.
To their credit, Monoprice was extremely prompt in their response and I got a refund within a day. I didn't want a replacement because it seems like other customers have had the same issue with this product.
PROS: Didn't discover any
CONS: Connectors didn't fit!!!
CONS: RCA's so tight, I couldn't use them
PROS: Short, heavy duty and solid RCA's
