Need help for the Hub to work
|
The people at MP were very dedicated to helping, especially Tjayi. I worked with him many days in a row as he asked me to try different things. Before that I also worked with some other specialists.
But for some reasons, I could not get the device to work for 5 of my hard drives: 250Gb, 320Gb, and 2T (3 of them). A small thumb drive and a printer worked. MP sent me a second unit to try, and I got the same problem.
The server software indicated that the drives were "connected," but the drives were not seen on the network or on the list of hardware (together with the "C" drive). As a result, I could not access the drives, even though the server software indicated "connected." I've tried to have the computer and the unit on the same router/switches, but that did not help. The small thumb and printer worked regardless of the router/switches. I have two switches serially connected to the router from ATT.
I have Windows 7, Home Premium, 64 bits. For those that get the unit to work with the big hard drives, did you have to do anything special?
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Tuan,
My apologies that we weren't able to get the server hub to fully function with the external HDD you were trying. I received a message from Nick that he tried a few other steps with you to no avail and we were currently trying to see if we could get the ports open on the router through AT&T. Hopefully that had some success but if not you probably won't have much use for the server with it not being compatible with your drives and I can setup an RMA for a return if you like, just let me know what works best for you. Again my apologies we weren't able to get this working for you. Thank you for your patience and cooperation and continuing to be a Monoprice customer.
Sincerely

by Anonymous Thank you very much.
My problem has been resolved. A third party firewall caused the problem. As soon as I turned off the firewall, the USB hub worked great.
It was mind boggling that there was no way for me to think of the firewall as the cause. The hub worked for the flash, the printer, etc., but did not work for other hard drives, the software server indicated "connected" for those hard drives. etc.
by Monoprice Administrator Hi Tuan,
So glad to hear everything is up and running and the server hub is working fantastic for you. Sorry that it took as long as it did to get it functioning but I'm glad we did.
I would like to ask for a small minute of your time because we here at Monoprice are constantly seeking ways to better serve our customers. If you would be so kind to give myself as well as the company feedback on Reseller Ratings it would be greatly appreciated. Good Network USB Server
|
Pros: Able to share USB resources with each PC on the network.
Cons: Need a PC and driver software loaded and running at startup to see the USB port. Cannot run standalone. Not a Network Storage Device because it need PC to access the files.
Overall good little unit to have if you want to share Printer or scanner without a network built in.

Excellent Product
|
Pros: Price is amazing. Looks great and works great. MP Tech Support is awesome.
Cons: Not really any Cons...just some picky points for the next version. No USB ports on the back, so all USB items (printers/drives) are connected on the front, yet the LAN and pwr are on the back. Turns it into a kind of octopus to deal with. If all or at least a couple of the USB ports were on the back (like a router), it would clean up the funtionality a bit. I'll probably end up setting it on it's side to deal with wires going everywhere. A little base to set it on its side would be a nice feature as well.
This 4 Port Gigabit Network USB 2.0 Server Hub w/ Power Adapter worked exactly as promised and even more. I have a 2nd Generation Drobo that is 4TB (2 - 2TB partitions) and have been trying to find a way to attach it to my network. The folks at MP weren't sure if it would work since this server only supports drives up to 2TB...but it is and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to MP Tech Support (Lamont & Chris & one other) for helping me. I installed the software on XP, Win7 32-bit, and Win7 64-bit, machines. The only problem I had was not making sure all my Firewalls would allow the program to connect. On my 64-bit system (new) McAfee was running due to a pre-install and I didn't think of that...once we figured that out...there were zero issues. Had I thought of that to begin with I wouldn't have had to contact them. The video showing the install is spot one. Thanks Monoprice. Awesome job with this product. Rob

Love it
|
Pros: It does exactly what I wanted. I have all of my hard drive linked together and over my network hooked to my pc. from there I have my apple tv sinked to my pc and it all works great.
Cons: I wish it was mac capable, so I can use my mac.
I also am having issues with during a period it feels like it goes into a sleep mode. during a file transfer i will get a cannot find location because they disappeared. Any ideas on how to fix that would be helpful.
As a computer repair owner this makes things a lot easier for me to store all of my customer data and files. I love the fact that when working a pc that i can just connect to my network and pull of the programs that I need to repair viruses and etc from my usb server. I also can do the same for a mouse and keyboard. never have to plug it in the pc just use the server and connect to it. I love it!

Finally, A USB Sharing Server that works
|
Pros: Very reliable, handles a variety of devices
Cons: None that I have found
I have tried several of this type of device from other manufacturers. None worked well. They always seemed to disconnect requiring me to power-cycle to get them working. After using the Monoprice server for almost 6 months, I am extremely happy. The server always works. I am using the device to connect a Canoscan 4400f as well as Selphy and Pixma Pro 9000 printers. This unit works so well, I bought another so the kids can share a printer for schoolwork. Again, after two months, the device always works!

Gigabit USB Server
|
Pros: It works well as a USB server on my gigabit network, remembering that USB is an exclusive connection.
Cons: All connections should be on the back and lights on the front. I hate the spider wire system. I also wish it were USB 3.0 for theoretical double the USB 2.0 speed.
I have 2 USB 3.0 External 2TB drives, 1 USB 2.0 External 1.5TB drive and a Canon S750 printer attached. The drives are for my media servers, I download on two laptops (on all the time) and play media from a powerful desktop (on only when watching media in the evenings). When downloads are complete, I connect (electronically) with a laptop and save the media to the required hard drive, then disconnect. It takes 4 to 8 minutes to transfer 4GB to 8GB .mkv files. When I turn on the Media player, the drive automatically connect and we watch movies and TV episodes all evening. I hope when I have to add more drives, there will be a Gigabit USB 3.0 unit available. I found this system to be less expensive than a "Network Attached Storage" unit, less complicated as all my drives are Windows formatted and it works well for me. The USB exclusive connection is USB, and if that is not what you want, then go for "NAS", pay the price and deal with LINUX. Windows file system is NOT used on NAS.

Quality look but lacks consistent functionality
|
Pros: Quality build
Cons: Does not work more than 5 minutes. Tried on both XP and Vista OS. Connected hard drives will only show up for a brief period and disappear. To get it to work again, one would have to unplug the hub.
Tech Chat @ MonoPrice attempted to resolve the problem but to no avail. RMA granted and a new unit arrived but possesses the same problem, so RMA again with refund. Disappointed with the product but not MP. Thank you MP.

Performs well (preliminary review)
|
Pros: Seems to perform very well in preliminary tests. Blue power and port LEDs are just bright enough, instead of blue-plague ultrabright!
Cons: Documentation does not exactly match, but is adequate for use. Firmware is updatable, but there are no links to OEM site in the docs. It will be Monoprice's responsibility to make updates of docs and firmware available.
This is just a preliminary review (for those wondering "should I - shouldn't I"). More later. I have tested with a USB hard drive, a keyboard and a mouse. All work fine. The file transfer speed with this device was perhaps just a tiny bit FASTER than with the same drive plugged directly into my computer's USB root hub. There was no preceptible lag in keyboard or mouse performance while the file transfer was in progress. This device will not work with downstream USB hubs. This means that active USB extension cables won't work, and some other devices that appear to be hubs, such as WiFi dongles, may not work. I tried a USB to PS/2 converter and it worked OK. Auto disconnect of storage devices is done after only a minute of inactivity. I would rather the device stayed connected after the inactivity time, and auto-disconnected only if some other user requested connection. I have had no problems with spurious disconnections, as the first reviewer reported.

Issues
|
Pros: I can't seem to find any yet.
Cons: This device is extremely difficult to keep up on your network.
I have had issues keeping this up on my network. I had to unplug all usb devices, reset the device, then was able to get to the web interface. After plugging in one usb device, it drops off the network and i am unable to communicate with the device.
Firmware section indicates it can be updated but there is no indication in documentation or on the web interface how/where to download an update.
With no updates to fix these apparent issues, i will be sending this device back.
I was looking for a device to take my USB drives and share over ethernet lan. Guess i will keep looking.
