Work great
Pros: Three time cheaper than original Apple adapter.

Cons: None so far.

Work like a charm on brand new generation of Apple iMac 21" or 27" (2013). Order large quantity for my Apple lab at work and they all work fine.

Does exactly as advertised
Pros: Very inexpensive and affordable (i.e. not Apple pricing), feels durable and robust

Cons: One of the two threading pins is cut too short and I can't use it to lock with my VGA cable

The pros and cons section wraps-up my thoughts on this adaptor. I can't believe Apple charges $30 for such an adaptor!

The one con I have about this adaptor is really minor but it is a product flaw nonetheless, so I gave it a 9/10 rating.

Buy the Apple one
Pros: Cheaper than the Apple one

Cons: Lots of problems with a 13inch MacBook Pro (mid 2012)

I love Monoprice stuff, but this part has caused me nothing but problems. It does not out-and-out fail, but 95% of the time, it hangs my MacBook pro. The part from Apple just works. The Monoprice mini Display port to HDMI cable works perfectly, but this VGA part has problems, at least on my system.

Works Great
Pros: Less expensive than Mac's version of the same item.
Works great.
Shipped quickly.

Cons: None.

I bought my first Mac recently, a Mac Mini. Was a little nervous about the experience. Had a VGA monitor I wanted to hook up. I was going to buy the Thunderbolt adapter that Apple was selling directly. Usually Apple products are basically the same price everywhere, but on a whim searched the internet first. I've bought from Monoprice before, so when I saw it pop up in my Google search I was pleased. Saw the price was notably cheaper and decided to go for it. Haven't looked back since.

Anyone got this thing to work w/a 2012 Macbook Pro?
Pros: none

Cons: Does not work.

I have tried this on 2 different Macbook Pros, both 2012 models and it locks them up right away. Does anybody with a 2012 Macbook Pro have this working with there computer?

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello,

My apologies for the problems you ran into with the Mini DisplayPort adapter. It's odd that two would lock up your MBP the minute you connect it. Are you getting any type of error of sorts? I have notified our Product Management Team to look into this to see if there is a particular issue with the adapter. Have you also by chance tried a different apple computer? Also what version OSX were you running?

If you are still having issues with the adapters and would like to return them we do offer a 30 day return policy. I would just need an order number to get the process started. Again my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Sincerely

No specific errors pop up.

Both Macbook Pros I tried on were running Mac 10.8.3

I am troubleshooting the adapter for a friend, if I determine it is faulty I will have him contact you for a return.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hi,

I understand and please let us know if you have any luck with the adapters working with the MBP.

One thing to try if you are able to access your settings is the following.

1.) Go into the System Settings

2.) Go into the Display Settings

3.) On one of the Tabs in the Display Settings Window there will be a button on the lower right hand corner that says “Detect Displays”. Click on it.

4.) On one of the other tabs in the Display Settings Window will be a list of different resolutions, such as 1920x1080. Try them all until you find one that works, it can vary from setup to setup depending on the devices.

5.) On some models of Mac’s you can disable the discrete video card. When discrete video is disable the external display does not work. Re-enabling discrete video fixes the issue. To check if it is enabled go into the system settings and it will be under the energy saver options in the upper left hand side.

~ Should that not work ~

6.) Run the graphics and EFI updates.

Some firmware updates for Intel-based Macs may not be displayed automatically using Software Update. If they do not appear in Software Update, they must be manually downloaded from the Apple Downloads site. If you are unsure whether your computer needs a particular update, simply download and open the update installer. The installer will alert you if the firmware update is already installed or not needed.

Thank you

Tjayi

Numbers 1 - 5 cannot be done as the system immediately locks up when hooking up the adapter.

Number 6: I have run all updates and reset the smc to no avail.

Pros: none

Cons: does not work at all, ever, with a 13-inch mid 2012 MacBook Pro.

When attached, the machine immediately becomes unresponsive, and remains so until the adapter is detached.

A comparable Apple-branded adapter works perfectly, so the problem is with the adapter, not the laptop.

Hello Dennis,

My apologies for the trouble you had with the Mini DisplayPort adapter. It does sound like you may have a faulty adapter and if you like I can issue an RMA for a replacement to be sent out. I would just need your order number to get started. Also one thing you may want to try is lowering the resolution first before connecting the adapter also double checking to make sure you aren't in extended mode. Again my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Mini displayport to VGA adapter
Pros: It does display on an external monitor, properly.

Cons: On a MacBook-Pro, it will not come back after the Mac display goes to sleep.

When connected to a MacBook-Pro, it works find until the display goes to sleep, then it will not come back. You need to disconnect then reconnect the adapter, or sometimes you need to reboot.

Uncommonly Bad Adapters
Pros: They are inexpensive

Cons: They are not reliable

I have purchased several of these adapters the last couple of years. They are way cheaper than the Apple version but for an obvious reason. While they have all worked right out of the box, they have a very high failure rate. Several of them have just stopped working. Whenever an end user calls me and complains that his projector is no longer working, the first thing I ask him is if they have an Apple adapter or a Monoprice adapter. If they have a monoprice adapter I just tell them to throw it in the trash and bring them an Apple adapter. I usually bought them at least 10 at a time and stored them all in a drawer. When they fail I just toss them because I have no idea when they were bought or on which order. It's a shame because other than these adapters I have never had a product from Monoprice let me down. In fact, I will often recommend Monoprice to total strangers in a store when I see them about to purchase an overpriced cable from a big box store. I usually recommend Monoprice to all my friends, but in this case I can not recommend this particular product.

Works great for MacMini (Late 2012) OS X 10.8.3
Pros: Just plain works

Cons: None

Am using this with a KVM Trendnet TK207-K to allow my HP monitor to be used with both my PC and new MacMini.
First tried a $3 DVI-to-VGA adapter on Amazon thru the Mac's included HDMI-DVI cable. That was a no-go- adapter didn't fit or work. This works great. Am posting this in case there are other Mac-Mini users wondering if this will work, as I did not see any other postings specifically for this machine.

Inconsistant with MacBook Pro mid 2012
Pros: sturdy

Cons: doesn't communicate well with MacBook Pro

I struggled to make a consistant connection between external monitors, projectors, and my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Apple Tech support couldn't figure it out. No software updates or other work arounds worked consistently. I finally bought two Apple adapters and lo and behold, they work like a charm. So these devices, unfortunately, don't work well with the mid-2012 MacBooks.

Quality on these is worse. All 3 broke on first use out of packaging.
Pros: Cheap

Cons: Broke on the very first use.

You get what you pay for. I bought three of these and ALL THREE broken on the very first use. The plastic casing around the Mini Displayport end cracked off almost immediately. Sure, the price is cheap, but you really get what you pay for...

Displayport VGA adapter
Pros: Much cheaper than the Apple version, works as expected with multiple monitors.

Cons: Plastic casing is fragile, ugly color

The adapter works will with a Mid 2012 Macbook Air. I have used it with several monitors and it works with all of them at different resolutions. The plastic on the DisplayPort end was brittle and broke after a few uses, but some glue and tape fixed it and it still works fine. For a cheaper Apple alternative it works well although not quite Apple quality.

Does not work at all
Bought this to attach my 2012 13' macbook pro to our projectors VGA cord. It does not work at all - just freezes my screen and the projector doesn't read anything at all, which is frustrating as it has no problem with the connection from our older Mac or PC.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello,

My apologies for the issues you are having with the Mini DP adapter. If I may ask have you tried lowering the resolution prior to connecting the adapter? This may help sync of the Macbook, also is the MBP even detecting the projector when the adapter is connected? If none of this helps you may have a faulty unit and I can get an RMA setup for a replacement if you like I would just need your order number to get things started. Again my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Pros: Works great with my DELL laptop! Priced very well for its quality! and very fast shipping!

Cons: None

I own a new Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook (L421X) and an old Dell 19" LCD Monitor (E196FPf) that was manufactured in 2005, and they both work great together! Even though the monitor is not HD, the picture quality was still very good. I tested it out with some videos, including HD movies from Netflix, and the quality was still very good. Poor image quality in comparison to the Apple versioin (at least on my Dell laptop)
Using my Dell Laptop, the 1920x1080 signal (which is native to both my laptop and monitor) appear verry "blurry" on the screen (text on the screen is not well defined). In comparison, if I use the Apple adaptor (using the same laptop and same external monitor) the image is clean and well defined.

Dear Tjayi,

I discovered what the problem was. In order for PID 5107 to display images as clean as the model from Apple, I need to change two settings of my DELL LCD Monitor called "Phase" and "Clock". Monitors can do it automatically (they often have a feature called "auto adjust" that can be activated from the monitor menu or the parameters can be set manually. I believe it is because PID 5107 and the model from Apple use really different values.

Customers interested to learn more about that problem can consult those web sites:
http://www.techmind.org/lcd/phasexplan.html
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/clock_phase.php

Thaks for all!

Just the right widget
Pros: Does exactly what it says

Cons: None

I started giving presentations for work this semester, and while I can borrow one of these to connect my MacBook to the room system, I felt that I couldn't afford to rely completely on everyone else's returning them to the source nor did I want to forget to do that myself. This connector worked perfectly from the get-go.

Works great so far
Pros: Cheaper, easy to use, good quality.

Cons: None, at the moment.

I've been using this with my Macbook Air 11'' and I've had no problems with it since my purchase. Works great, and it is definitely worth it.

Pros: Does exactly what it says

Cons: Beige, not Apple white

Does exactly what it says. Worked the first time between my MacBook Pro and an old VGA CRT at 1600x1200. I particularly like to see third-party Thunderbolt stuff - maybe I can buy an adapter that's not MacBook model specific for once.

Works fine with Mid 2012 MacBook Pro - after today's Apple update
Pros: Sturdy, fits thunderbolt port well, working well.

Cons: Sort of a big ugly box for the VGA cable to plug into. (But at least one can plug the VGA all the way in and screw the connector screws in)

The mid 2012 MacBook Pros have had an issue with a Mini Display Port to VGA adapter, which I discovered after buying two Monoprice adapters (and they didn't work). There was some question if the Apple adapter worked while the Monoprice didn't. Nope. The problem was Apple's. Today (Nov 20) Apple released an update that fixed the issue. My Viewsonic VGA cabled monitor now works perfectly with the Monoprice adapter. I've switched from Apple adapters to Monoprice the last few years not simply because of price, but durability. The Apple adapters fail - read the reviews in the Apple store. I've never had a Monoprice adapter fail.

Disappointed in performance
Cons: Quality is not good - should have bit the bullet and bought MAC branded connectors

We have had a lot of issues with these adapters right out of the package - we ordered them to use with Mac Book Pros and our classroom VGA projectors. Some times the adapters work - sometimes they don't - seem to have a short in the connection.

Works Great - Plug and Play Mini Display Port to VGA
Pros: Works as expected, great price. The MacBook Pro 13" is driving a much larger monitor at much higher resolution through this device.

Cons: None

Excellent solution to the missing VGA support on the Apple MacBook Pro. I have a DVI adapter that doesn't work with the cable I'm using, but the VGA display works perfectly with this Mini Display Port to VGA device.

Definitely a good deal. Monoprice cables and adapters are as good as the Apple cables and Adapters, and cost less. What else could you want ? They work.

Great product for the price
Pros: -Reasonable price
-Works well
-Flexible cable

Cons: -Computer will not recognize a second display until the external monitor is plugged in. Let me explain as that may have sounded ludicrous. The official Apple product begins outputting a signal as soon as the adapter is plugged in even if there is not a monitor plugged in to read the signal. Now 99% of the time, this is not an issue, but I have run into that 1% problematic issue. I have a projector that I occasionally plug into, but I don't plug the computer directly into the projector (if I did plug it directly into the projector, this would not be an issue). The projector is about 200 feet away from where the computer is, so we have to use a VGA to component converter then the component cables run all the way to a box that receives the signal then rebroadcasts the signal to the projector. The reason the Monoprice adapter does not work in this specific case is because the signal has been converted and interrupted and the computer cannot negotiate directly with the projector, therefore the computer does not recognize a second monitor is present (again, a very rare and odd case).

I would buy this product again if I lost my current one. Much cheaper than Apple's

Pros: Inexpensive, does the job

Cons: none

I ranked this item a 9/10 since I've only had it for 4 months. However, it has worked flawlessly, and I expect it to continue to do so. At a cost of more than 60% less than a true apple product, it works well and I'm very happy with it.

Pros: Price. Selection. Customer service.

Great price. Only about 1/3 what Apple would charge. Worked really well. I wasn't quite sure I was getting the right item and their customer service guy got on the phone and walked me through it. He took all that time for something that cost just over $10!

Buy this one
Pros: Works just the same as the more expensive Apple adapter, and the threads actually engage with the male VGA hold down screws

Cons: Form factor is a little larger than the Apple adapter

If the size of the Tbolt to VGA adapter Isn't an issue, then I would definitely get this one, because it doesn't accidentally unplug because you can secure the male posts from the VGA cable to the adapter.

Pros: Great price, works just fine

Cons: I had to get a second one for it to work ... but that happens

In an earlier review, I noted that I received a dud. I am happy to say that Monoprice customer service is excellent and made sure that I was provided with a free return label and, once the original was returned, a free replacement cable. I tested the new cable out (2012 Macbook Air 13) and it worked without issue. Thanks a lot for the great service!

Read on if you planning to watch CableCard TV on the connected monitor
Pros: I bought this to hook up a 3rd monitor to my AMD HD 6870 video card. This was needed because using HDMI/DVI ports only allows connecting up to 2 monitors. The product works as intended for this purpose.

Cons: It turns out using this adapter does not allow viewing CableCard TV (I used a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime) through Windows Media Center due to HDCP issues. Normally, you need HDCP compliance when using a digital connections (HDMI/DVI) but it is not needed if a VGA connection is used. I had assumed that this would work, but it turns out it won't. Note that nowhere in the product description is it claimed that this will work, so I'm not placing any blame here. I just wanted to make people aware in case they are thinking of using this product for the described purpose.

Overall, it works as intended and I am very pleased. However, for people who intend on using Windows Media Center to watch CableCard TV on the connected monitor, just be forewarned that this will not work.

Pros: This adapter works on most apple devices with a thunderbolt adapter as I have purchased over 50 of these.

Cons: I am finding that on the 2012 model of the 13" MacBook Pro that it is not working at all. After plugging in this adapter on brand new MBP's it will either freeze the machine or not display anything to an external monitor.

Can't go wrong with Monoprice products
I've ordered several of these from ebay only to receive garbage that didn't work or that only lasted a short period. Finally picked up this cable from monoprice, been using it for over a year and still works like it should, price was amazing and the product is quality. I'd even say that these cables are way better than the ridiculously over priced cables that apple sells. I have purchased more products from Monoprice since and never had a problem, quality products plus fast delivery

Pros: Very inexpensive and does exactly what it says on the box! Still solid after a few months use.

Cons: It's not quite as refined looking as the official Apple adapter.

I needed a way to go from my MacBook Pro to a pico projector that only accepted VGA. Monoprice's Display port to VGA adapter is completely functional, but substantially less expensive than the official Apple one. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of glossy Apple look, this is a great product.

Got a dud, unfortunately
Pros: Great price if it worked

Cons: Did not work with 2011 MacbookAir with Thunderbolt to a VGA projector

I bought this adapter for occasions when I would want to travel with my MacBook Air and hook it up to a projector for a presentation. I did not have a pressing need for it when it arrived, so I did not test it. Unfortunately, a few months later, I took it to a job interview for which I needed to make a presentation and found that the adapter did not work. Thankfully I discovered this when early during my setup time (knowing I needed to test it) and found someone else who had an Apple version of this same cable (which worked without an issue). This was a slightly embarrassing situation, so I would definitely advise you to test your cable if you can before you need it for "primetime" ... unfortunately I couldn't do this as I don't have any VGA input devices that I normally have access to.

The Apple towers come with a dual mini display output which is great. Their $29 adapter cost...not as great. These adapters work just as well and at a sane cost. Some issues with higher-resolution displays
Pros: Solid product, great price and will work fine under most circumstances.

Cons: some issues with higher resolution monitors.

Not really a fault of the product per se, but something to be aware of.... I used this to connect my early 2011 15" Macbook Pro to a 24" HP LA2405wg monitor, and to also use it on lower resolution projectors. While it works fine for most cases, the combination of this device with that monitor and Macbook will not support the maximum resolution of that display. I need the DVI interface for that. I had hoped to have one adapter for a wide range of monitors, but instead I need to purchase a DVI to Displayport adapter for my monitor. At least I know the best play to buy one )

Pros: Works without a glitch and does just what it's advertised to do.
The housing of the mini display port/thunderbolt end of the adapter is nice and small, doesn't block the usb port next to it the way another adapter from another company did.

Cons: The cable from the connector to the adapter end could be longer, helping to reduce clutter on the desktop.

As I said above: Works without a glitch and does just what it's advertised to do. What more is there to say, for a device such as this, this is the highest praise there it.

These work perfectly, and are much more reasonably priced than others. I ordered monoprice vga, hdmi, and dvi adapters for my macbook pro. I have great peace of mind walking into presentations now.

Great product and great service
Pros: Monoprice service and speed are great! The product works great.

Cons: none

Apple has a variety of confusing display ports. The more specific you could be on your site description, perhaps with an image of the port, the quicker it would be to select the right one for my machine.

Why pay more
Needed to attach mac book pro to Dell Monitor. Works fine, no need to spend more.
