Question: What is the difference between a bus-powered hub and a self-powered hub with an included A/C adapter?
Answer: A bus-powered hub receives power straight through the primary USB connection between the hub and the computer it is connected to. It is limited to the amount of power available on the computers USB port.

A self-powered hub, whether AC or DC, has the option to add an external power adapter to augment the power to the hub in order to provide enough power for high power draw devices or when many low power devices are connected but the standard bus power is insufficient to power all the devices.

Many hubs have coaxial power ports for optional power adapters so that the hub can be self-powered but do not include the power adapters in the packaging meaning it relies on bus power out of the box.

Question: How do I know if I need a bus-powered hub or a self-powered hub with A/C power?
Answer: With USB hubs, the need for optional power depends on what is being connected. Low power draw devices like mice and keyboards or devices that have their own power supplies like printers usually do not require additional power. High power devices that rely on bus power like webcams will need the optional power. Also, the amount of power available on the port you are computer as well as how many total USB devices connected can be a determining factor. If you plan to have many high power draw devices connected to your hub, it is best to get a hub which includes the A/C adapter.
