Early cables defective?
|
Pros: Monoprice has never disappointed till now
Cons: Does not support USB 3.0
Bought several of these almost two years ago while buying a bunch of other cables and in the event that someday I'd have USB 3.0 devices. Recently got my first USB 3.0 device. Plugged it in an like a "few" others here got the Windows message about connecting to a USB 3.0 port would give me better performance. Ran a speed test and confirmed USB 2.0 speeds. Took the device (thumb drive) off the Monoprice 3 ft. extension and connected it directly to the USB 3.0 controller cards ports in the rear of the computer. Then I got USB 3.0 speed.
Guessing that the early versions were defective.

Monoprice in General

Pros: Generally best price and quality. Really good and easy to use webstore. Selection in some areas (USB 3.0) could be better.
Cons: Other side of the country. (Snail mail deliveries take too long.)
Thumbs up.

I am having intermittent connection problems when using WD my passport external usb 3.0 HDD
|
Pros: Inexpensive. Well Made cable.
Cons: Poor performance using WD My Passport usb 3.0 drives.
I bought this to use to connect to my USB 3.0 port and works fine in this regard. But, there appears to be a compatibility problem when connecting with my WD Passport USB 3.0 drive, both 1TB and 2TB varieties. Partially through a file copy process using this cable causes the WD drive to become unrecognizable and a message appears in Windows 7. Thought this might be a fluke so tried it using various copy of folders and happens all the time. Thus seems there is a problem with the cable. I can copy a single file, but if I try to copy, for example 30GB of files it fails partially through the process.

Didn't work properly for me. Would hang my windows explorer just trying to hook up an external hard drive with this cable and then it would take forever just to recognize the drive. I then tested the speed with HD tach and the chart just looks awful with constant dropouts across the board. I got both this 3ft USB3 cable and the 6ft version (PID 6506), and they perform identically bad, so I don't think I got a lemon or anything. If I don't use this extension cable and hook the drive up with the cable it came with, the drive is recognized instantly and performs well, so I'm sure it's the cable causing issues. I don't even want a refund or anything because it's only a couple of bucks, but I definitely won't be buying any of these USB 3 cables from monoprice again. I know most of their other stuff is good, so I'm not too angry, but I am disappointed in this particular product.

Cons: intermittent connection when using WD my passport external usb 3.0 HDD.
don't know if i got a defective cable, my usb 3.0 isn't always recognized when using this cable. sometimes it detects. sometimes it doesn't.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Dan,
Thank you for your review and my apologies for the issues you have experienced with PID 6505. Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have received a defective product. Now if you'd like, I can help setup an RMA for a replacement. If you would like me to proceed with the RMA, all I would need is the order # this cable is under. Sorry again for the trouble and thanks in advance!

Buy one. Buy a few. You NEED them.
|
Pros: Premium quality, exceptional price, verified performance on both Mac and Windows.
As USB ports on MacBooks and Ultrabooks get closer together while high capacity flash drivers become chunkier, things can get crowded. Since your next notebook will probably have USB 3.0 ports, (also called SuperSpeed USB), get ready now with a few of these 3-footers.
I verified that the cable meets the USB 3.0 specs by plugging in a Patriot 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive with and without the cable. Whether I'm running Mac OS X or Windows 7 in Boot Camp, the system report behaves as if the cable isn't even there. Just to be sure, I swapped to USB 2.0 cable and, BAM!, the speed dropped. Mac OS X saw the flash drive as USB 2.0 and Windows 7 even chided me to use a USB 3.0 port.
Like everything else I've bought from Monoprice, this one's a winner.

Great cable
|
Pros: straight solid construction. Not zig baggy like ordinary usb included cables.
Cons: none
I use these as usb remote extensions at my desk mounted with 3m VHB tape. gold plating ensures lasting good connectivity. You can also mount usb receiver dongles: bluetooth or wireless keyboard or mouse so that signal is strong...literally inches away. Order several in 3ft and 6ft sizes, you will need them.

I got the cable so I can use my rear USB 3.0 ports without having to climb around behind the PC every time I want to insert/remove a USB 3.0 USB flash drive.
I was worried the cable would degrade performance but my 32GB Mushkin USB 3.0 stick performs at the same rate with or without the cable.
Highly recommend.

Didn't work for me
|
Pros: Low price. Feels and looks like a quality cable
Cons: Did not work with my WD 3.0 HD
Bought 2 of these cables, none worked properly on 3.0 First one Windows did not even see the HD, second cable Windows sees it as a 2.0 HD. I get the windows message about the drive can run faster on a 3.0 port. The WD works fine when plugged directly with its original cable (1.5'). The HD with the extensions also worked when plugged to 2.0 ports, but at 2.0 speeds. Either I have a very picky HD, or there is something wrong with the extensions. Will try the 1.5' extensions when they arrive.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review. And I am truly sorry to hear of your experience you have had with this product. We will be taking your review into consideration so we can look into the PID#. Thank you for your understanding and patience in the matter.
For now, if possible, please try a couple of troubleshooting techniques with me to see if we can resolve your issue.
Have you tried another USB 3.0 device?
What about trying another port?
Please also make sure it is the blue one on the back of the case.
If possible, also try going into your motherboard bios and see if you need to enable 3.0 speeds.
Please let me know if the problems still occur. If it does, I can assist you in obtaining a replacement or a return RMA to see if a replacement will work better. We do have a lifetime warranty on non-electronics and cables as well as a 1 year warranty for electronics. And obtaining a replacement is of no additional cost. If you want to continue with an RMA just please provide the order# and if you wanted to return it or obtain a replacement. Thank you!
John Lingo Tech Support
by DW Hi John,
Appreciate your concern. I have 2 usb 3.0 ports, both have the same problem, my 3.0 flash drive also see them as 2.0 ports.
Just received my 1.5' (usb 3.0) cables from Monoprice today. Both my devices so far appear to be functioning correctly with these.
As for returning the other cables, postage will end up costing more than the cables. I will just keep them as 2.0 extensions.
With the exception of the 3 foot cables, you still make great products at great price. Will continue to shop at Monoprice.

Pros: Quality and fair price!
Cons: Turns out I ordered the wrong cable for my needed. I really needed a female to female HDMI cable, but ordered a female to male. TOTALLY MY FAULT... Still I kept it as short extension cable.
As with everything I have ever ordered from Monoprice, great quality product at a great price. I get just about all my cables from Monoprice, buying at you local retailer is just throwing money away.

3ft USB 3.0 Male to Female Extension

Pros: Excellent build quality Substantial but still flexible enough to coil without worrying about breaking it.
Cons: None
I bought this to extend the extremely short power cord on my Asus Transformer tablet. It has worked beyond expectations. It's added an extra 36" to the paltry 18" OEM cable :) I highly recommend this cable.

PC cables
|
Pros: Quality cables, adapters and devices at bargain prices.
Cons: You may wait a few days for delivery but it is worth the wait. If you need this cable now go out and buy it at a store and pay 10x the price for a cable (or other device) off the shelf that will not be any better and may be far worst in quality.
I use only Mono Price products for all my Hi-Fi, Home Theater and PC cables and even some of their newer devices they now offer, this review is coming through one of their new High Power Wireless-N USB adapters. I recommend Mono Price to all my friends and family.

Hasn't worked for me
|
Pros: Low cost. The ends of the cable connect securely.
Cons: Has yet to work with either of my USB 3.0 devices
I have tried it with two NexStar USB 3.0 hard drive enclosures. When I have connected my 2.5" enclosure to this cable, the drive powers on, but never shows up in Windows. With my 3.5" enclosure, I get a driver error saying the hardware hasn't installed correctly. Both drive enclosures work perfectly when connected directly to my computer. I also connected a USB 2.0 card reader to this cable, and it only worked intermittently. Something definitely isn't right with my cable.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review. And I am truly sorry to hear of your experience you have had with this item. I will be filing a complaint on this specific PID# so that our complaint dept can investigate properly. Thank you for your understanding and patience in the matter.
For now, if possible, please try a couple of troubleshooting techniques with me to see if we can resolve your issue.
Have you tried connecting it to a regular USB 2.0 port? How about on the back of the computer/mobo instead of on the case?
Have you tried it on a different computer or operating system?
Please let me know if the problems still occur. If it does, I can assist you in obtaining a replacement or a return RMA to see if a replacement will work better. We do have a lifetime warranty on non-electronics and cables as well as a 1 year warranty for electronics. And obtaining a replacement is of no additional cost If you want to continue with an RMA just please provide the order# and if you wanted to return it or obtain a replacement. Thank you!

by Marty Thank you for your reply.
The cable works with USB 2.0 ports both on the case and on the motherboard. I tried using a USB 2.0 flash drive in those tests. I then connected the cable to the USB 3.0 port on the motherboard. The flash drive worked properly.
I then tested my USB 3.0 hard drive. With the cable connected to the USB 3.0 port, the drive would only power up, but not appear in Windows. However, when I plugged the cable into a USB 2.0 port, my USB 3.0 drive would power up and it would appear in Windows. Of course, the message about the drive working faster with a USB 3.0 port appeared. As I mentioned earlier, the USB 3.0 hard drive works fine when connected directly to either of my USB 3.0 ports. The problem only occurs when connecting with the USB 3.0 extension cable in between.
I do not have another USB 3.0-capable computer to test the cable with. I am not sure if the problem lies with the cable, the portable hard drive, or my motherboard.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Marty,
Thank you for your response. Can you please let me know the length you are actually using this with. As USB is only rated up to 16ft. So past that if you add on to an extender it will not work. But thank you for that information I will forward it on the complaint as well. Thank you!
John Lingo Tech Support
by Marty The extension is 3ft, and the cable going from the extension to the hard drive is 4ft. So 7ft total.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Marty,
Thank you for that information. I see, well if you prefer you can obtain replacements so at least you can factor out the cable being defective. Did you want to go ahead and do that? I would just require your order#. Thank you!
John Lingo Tech Support
by Marty Hi John.
I received the replacement cable, and I am pleased to say the replacement is working. I have tried it with both of my USB 3.0 hard drives, and the cable worked with both of them.
I am impressed with Monoprice's support and willingness to send a replacement cable. The support you and Monoprice have provided for a $2 cable is better than the support I have received for more expensive products.

Cons: I have several of these cables and all of them are not spec'ing to 50% of 3.0 level montior readings when in use of them and connection have drop many times when in use that I just don't use them any more as 3.0's cabling.
I like Monoprice products very much but the usb 3.0 cables and hubs just don't preform to standards that are expected and rely on for the end uses. Face it here, usb 3.0 is the speed of data transfer - subpar cabling just kill transfer speed preformance and dissatisfies. I wish I had the usually experience I have with all of your other products with these cables and hubs but they are very disappointing to not mention about them openingly.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you very much for your comprehensive review. Here at Monoprice.com we truly value your feedback and appreciate your concerns in regards to our products. We will do our utmost best in escalating and fixing the issue so that our future customers do not encounter it as well as informing them via your review on the review section.
In a continuing effort to achieve maximum customer satisfaction as well as allowing us to investigate further, please allow us to attempt to help and resolve your issue.
Now, in regards to your USB 3.0 cable, can you please let me know what USB 3.0 devices you are using with this? Keep in mind due to the nature of USB, you can never reach the theoretical maximum if you have any other USB devices connected. But less than 50% is peculiar, I will go ahead and file a complaint on this. Thank you!
Please reply through the review system or email me directly at john.lingo@monoprice.com. If I do not receive a reply, we will continue to try to resolve the issues you've mentioned in your review, but will consider your review abandoned and it will be voided. Thank you for your cooperation.

by Buffalotruckermike John, Thank you for wanting to follow-up. I am using the following usd 3.0 devices(only one of any of them solely in operation when in their uses): 2 - Buffalo Tech external usb 3.0 Workstations 2tb harddrives and 2 - Buffalo Tech external usb 3.0 16X blu ray writers via the USB 3.0 PCI-E desktop cards in the two 6-cores AMD Processers PC's that I am using currently. Both PC's are workhorses and spec'ed to do work.
I hope that I have given you some useful information and please feel free to contract me if any further questions are an interest to you.

GREAT..... when it works.
|
Pros: Made with all the high quality materials you'd come to expect from Monoprice. Looks and feels sturdy.
Cons: Unreliable. Randomly causes disconnects both while HDD is in use and while idling.
Doesn't maintain consistent power to external 3.0 HDD, resulting in random "disconnects" while transferring data. Cost me $8 to RMA previous HDD bought from Newegg because I thought the drive was faulty. Almost returned the 2nd one too, until I found I only had the issues when using this extension cable. HDD works perfectly when connected directly to PC. I never have problems with cables bought from Monoprice. Been using their HIGH QUALITY materials for years. I suspect this might be a "bad apple" isolated incident, but no way of knowing since I'm the 1st to review.
