Good but didnt work for my application
I tried using it with a short 1ft run and another 40ft run and it didn't work. I was kind of expecting it since the description explains that it may not work with long runs.

Does not behave on Xbox 360
Pros: Cheap

Cons: No Sound output

Passive HDMI devices are generally pretty dicey to begin with, but it was cheap enough to give a try. Basically, I bought this as a gamble.

Unfortunately, I lost.

I tried to use this to connect my XBOX 360 to multiple TVs. One goes to the TV in the living room. The other wire goes to the TV in the next room, which has more space for the Kinect. When both are connected, I don't get any sound at all. I really don't know why.

While this may work for other devices, a passive splitter for the XBOX 360 is probably not the way to go.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello Katai,

My apologies for the problems you ran into with the HDMI splitter. If I may ask did you try different source devices? Also on your Xbox 360 did you double check to make sure the audio output was being sent through the HDMI? I assume you remove the splitter and connect directly you get both audio and video just fine. It may be that due to your distance a powered splitter is required, what would be the length you are going to each TV?

If you like and you are still having issues with the unit I can issue an RMA for a return. Again sorry for the trouble and if you have any other questions or concerns please let us know.

Sincerely

I tried different sources, but I get "Unsupported Signal" errors on both TVs. I used a 6ft cable and a 10ft cable with this splitter. The audio works fine if I use the cables without the splitter

by Monoprice Administrator
Hi Katai,

Thanks for the information and sorry you are still having issues with the splitter. If you like and don't really have any use for it I can issue an RMA for a return or if you care to give a replacement try I can setup for one to be sent out.

Thank you

Works.... Somewhat
Pros: Low cost
Mostly enjoy my DirecTv on two TVs

Cons: Need to have TV closest to DirecTv box on for signal to come in on other TV
Sound doesn't always come through

I wanted to split the signal from our basement DirecTv box to the TV in the rec room and to the TV in the workout room and figured this would be a low cost alternative to make it work. It has served its purpose for the most part. The one downfall that has ALWAYS been an issue is the need to have the TV on that is closest to the receiver so the signal comes through to the other TV that is on the other side of a wall. Even when I switch the output connectors for the TVs, it still does the same thing. Now, the sound is going out all together! When I plug the HDMI cable(s) directly into the receiver, the sound works just fine. When I plug the splitter back in, it doesn't work. That's not right!

Pros: very inexpensive

Cons: doesn't work

This device does not function. I purchased in order to split the signal from the Verizon box to be able to feed the TV and Surround Amp independantly. When both output HDMI cables are attached, neither output functions. When only one output cable is attached, it works. Very disappointed!!

I previously purchased a "powered" splitter at close to $50 that does in fact work, these non-powered devices are worthless.

Satisfied in the Bedr....
Pros: Works like a charm. Wanted to move my movie streamer into the bedroom but the tv in there only has 2 HDMI ports.
With this splitter it was easy as pie. Thanks!

Cons: Noting really. Just waiting for the future when it will be a little less bulky.

Awesomeness product. Thank You!

Piece of Junk
Pros: No Pros

Cons: Does not split the signal with enough power to go to two displays.

This product does not split the signal. I could only get one device to work at a time. After further research I should not have bought this item. What I needed was a 1x2 splitter with an amplifier. The hdmi signal coming out of most receivers is not strong enough to split. When it splits it 1/2s the signal power to each line and it is not enough power to push the signal to the display.

Passive Splitter
Pros: Inexpensive and compact

Cons: Does not work unless both the screens recieving the split signal are powered on.

I bought this to split the output of a security system DVR to two LCD screens at 720p over two 8 foot HDMI cables. It does work if both screens are on. If I turn one of the screens off then I do not get a signal on the screen that is still on.

I give this product the lowest rating possible only because Monoprice fails to include these "limitations" in their product description.

Hello Aaron,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with the HDMI splitter. If you like I can issue an RMA for a return if the splitter isn't going to quite work out for you. I would just need an order number to get things started. I will also notify our Product Team to review this item and test because you should have the ability to run either display without the other to be on if they are of the same resolution. Again my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Passive splitter
Pros: size

Cons: does not work well with imbalance

I was trying to use this splitter from by cable box to two TVs. One was in another room.
It seems that with a short cable from one output and a long cable the other output, it does not work well.
I have to reinsert the splitter every time I switch TVs or turn one off.
I assume I need to use a powered splitter for this application.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello xdsltrev,

Ahh I see.. yeahI'm afraid that actually may be the issue, note that this splitter does not pass the HDCP copy protection information, so it is unsuited for use with home theater systems such as cable boxes and/or A/V receivers. As you mentioned, a powered splitter is ideal in your case. Try PID 8204 (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10113&cs_id=1011306&p_id=8204&seq=1&format=2), will be just what you need :)

Now if you'd like, I can help setup an RMA for a return. If you would like me to proceed with the RMA, all I would need is the order # this splitter is under. Sorry again for the trouble and thanks in advance!

Not always the solution you hope for.
Pros: Another nice product by monoprice, well built and a great idea, very well priced, as usual !

Cons: Didn't work for my application at all. However, what with the complications of HDMI and HDCP, I didn't really expect it would work.

I bought this hoping I could split the output of my Pioneer receiver to a projector and tv but it wouldn't output anything at all. Sometimes this is bound to be the case with the complications of HDCP and HDMI. If you want to be SURE you'll have output to two devices from a supply source like an AV receiver, I'd recommend buying this instead: 1X2 Mini HDMI Splitter w/ 3D support item number 8204. It solved my problem perfectly !

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello Mr. Bellemare,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you had with the splitter. This particular passive splitter works best when it is going directly from source to displays over short runs as you probably figured out. I was just about to mention going with one of our powered splitters, but I see you already purchased one for your setup. I'm glad to see it is working for your and the problems you were having are now resolved. Thank you for your feedback and being a customer of Monoprice.

Hello,

Thank you for your review. Just to clarify, this should be able to handle HD signals fine, just make sure that you are not using a very long run and that you are using a thick cable. For those types of setups, I would recommend using a powered splitter. Thank you!

Hello Mr. Seguin,

My apologies for the trouble you had with the passive splitter. The splitter is designed to output directly from the source out to the displays for best performance. Hello,

Thank you for your review. Keep in mind, for bandwidth intensive content, I would recommend using a powered splitter. This passive one is perfect for low bandwidth content but if you are using it for 1080p, then a powered splitter is more suited for your setup. The power splitter can be located here.

Pros: The splitter makes a second periodic connection much more convenient.

Cons: I have a connection from a DirecTV satelite box going to my TV. If I plug my lap top into the splitter at the same time to watch something from the web, it distorts the TV picture. I have to unplug the satelite box to use the lap top.

Overall the splitter makes the connect and disconnect much easier.

Hello Jimmy,

Thank you for your review. And I am truly sorry for the inconvenience you've encountered with this item. We do recommend using a powered splitter if you will be using it for bandwidth intensive video. This will work well for short runs and 720p video and below. But if you will be using it for farther runs and 1080p video. May I suggest using our power splitters instead. They can be located here. Thanks!

HDMI Splitter requires both output devices to be on at the same time.
Pros: The price was right.

Cons: Unfortunately the splitter does not work as I understood it would. I wanted to split my satellite signal to 1 TV in my living room and another in my kitchen knowing that I would be watching 1 or the other, never both at the same time...

I hooked the splitter up to my Satellite receiver, with 1 output connected to a 50" Samsung 1080P Plasma and the other to a 28" Samsung 1080P LCD Monitor. If I have both the Plasma and LCD on, the picture is perfect. As soon as I shut 1 of them off, the picture on the other one is all distorted.

Not sure of it's uses
Pros: Shipping was fast and cheap.

Cons: Doesn't work.

Background:
My dad has a HK receiver that has HDMI 1.2. Because of the older technology it doesn't work with the sharp bluray player he bought (it worked fine with a panasonic though). The video is always distorted and missing colours. So in an attempt at resolving the problem I bought 2 of these splitters in the hopes of sending an audio signal to a receiver, and the video signal to the tv so that the video repeater in the reciever would be bypassed....no dice. Neither of the splitters worked as I'd hoped.

It may be that I bought the wrong parts not knowing what they are supposed to do, but from my understanding these should have worked. Out of many monoprice purchases this is the first strike against any of their products, I'm not overly disappointed as the loss was minimal compared to what I've saved with other products/purchases.

Product Technically Works
Pros: This product would technically work if I fiddled with the setting enough.

Cons: HDMI devices seem to be designed to autodetect resolution.

I've discovered most HDMI devices become confused when I attempted to use this splitter. Our PS3, HD set top box, and HDMI stereo all seem to have some autodetect feature to determine what screen resolution to use. When I attempted to split the HDMI cable and plug the device into two televisions (same manufacturer, different models, different sizes) it plain wouldn't work.

If I plugged it into the smaller tv first, I could then add the larger tv and it would work. I think, it's been a few weeks since I tried it. Overall, it required too much manpulation to get it to work. I gave up.

Pros: I give it a rating at all because it is well made.

Cons: I couldn't get it to work or the part didn't work.

Either it didn't work, or I couldn't get it to work on my system. I have an ONKYO receiver, a Sony TV and a JVC TV and I couldn't get the same picture to show up on both the TV's. Don't use with long cables
Cons: When connected to at least one long cable (25') the video either doesn't work or is very choppy.

I bought this to connect my PS3 to my TV (6' connection) and my monitor (25'). When I was using both connections, no video showed up at all. When using one of the cables, the video would drop in and out with the 25' cable, but was ok with the shorter one. I'm sure this would work ok with two shorter connections. I figured it was cheap enough to try out, and I can use it in the future when/if I have a more compatible setup.

The device likely works, but it just didn't work with my setup. Since I wasn't able to use it as intended, I'm giving a 5/10.

I really do not know how to rate the product as although the splitter is well made I have come to know that you will probably need a powered HDMI splitter due to signal loss. I purchased 2 splitters for 2 different HDTV's in my home and same issue with both connections. I was running HDMI from the DVD player and a Tablet PC. Neither would function.

HDMI Splitter
Pros: Worked great in a commercial setting. Easy to use and easy for the consumer to understand.

Cons: Had small trouble getting only one of the two tvs to operate without both being on. Also a small sound issue, may have been a TV setting though.

For the cost and ease of use, I recommend this product.

spotty
Pros: Good option if it works with your equipment.

Cons: Not entirely unexpected but passive splitters cut signal strength and some monitors/TVs have a hard time picking up the reduced strength split signal.

Wanted to split signal from xbox 360 to send one directly to monitor and the other to recording input on PC so my son could capture video from his gaming sessions. Unfortunately, whenever both connections were made neither the monitor nor the capture device could lock onto the signal. I could not find a combination that would work for this purpose although I could get one tv to lock onto the split signal. So if you have equipment that is low signal strength tolerant, this should work. Was worth a try but I'll have to upgrade to the powered splitter.

You probably need an active splitter
Pros: Monoprice cable quality

Cons: Doesn't work in my setup, and 90% chance it wont work in yours either.

Its hard to knock a product that with just a little research you'll learn wont work in 90% of the applications out there. But i don't think enough product information is given outlining exactly what scenarios a passive HDMI splitter will work in. But at 5 bucks, i gave it a try.

My intent was to split my ps3 to a Yamaha RX-667 and a dell s2209w computer monitor. Did not work no matter what combination was on/off

Took the receiver out the equation to see what it might work with. Connected from a FIOS STB to a Toshiba 1080p 40' and my Dell monitor. Oddly enough it works going to the Dell monitor NOT the TV. smh.

So its pretty clear that devices demanding proper HDCP negotiation, you need an active splitter. You should know if your HDMI device is HDCP "lenient".

Hello,

Sorry for the trouble with the Video/Audio Splitter - HDMI M to HDMI F X 2, we try to outline what situations this item will NOT work with in the description:
NOTE: It is STRONGLY recommended NOT to use this passive splitter with longer lengths of HDMI cables. Also, since passive splitters do not negotiate individual handshakes between connected devices and do not pass HDCP information back to the source device, passive splitters are not recommended for most home theater applications. For home theater applications, using an active or powered splitter is highly recommended. If you're looking for a 1x2 HDMI splitter for a home theater application, we recommend using product ID 4921.

(*) This is a splitter cable. You can only connect one source device (i.e. DVD player, cable box or satellite receiver) to two output devices (i.e. TV or projector). You can't connect two source devices (i.e. DVD player, cable box or satellite receiver) to one output device (i.e. TV or projector).

Thank you.

Hi Stephen, I am using this to split a ps3 to 2 end devices. A TV and a computer monitor.

I don't think the gotchas of the product was clearly outlined on the product page. I had to Google to find out that there would be HDCP issues.

thanks.

Inexpensive HDMI splitter for DSLR video work
Pros: inexpensive and one of the few items of this type that works for DSLR video

Cons: none so far

I purchased this splitter due to the low price and the fact that i'd been told that there were no low-cost HDMI splitters that worked with DSLR cameras for video use. Particularly not unpowered splitters like this one. The camera rental house mentioned that they no longer rent the powered splitters because they tend to burn out quickly and are expensive, but when i showed them the monoprice splitter they were excited... apparently another client had brought one in and it had worked, but refused to tell them where he found it. So we tested our splitter and it did work, quite well in fact. Unfortunately we didn't have need for one on the shoot so it hasn't been properly field tested, but for the price what do you have to lose?

Video/Audio Splitter - HDMI M to HDMI F X 2
Pros: Price is very cheap, so if it does not work it's no major loss

Cons: 50/50 chance that it might work depending on what you're trying to set-up.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I have the PS3 and a Mac laptop that converts DVI to HDMI and I wanted to plug both sources into my Samsung flatscreen so that I wouldn't have to keep getting up to change the wires manually. My set-up was pretty simple and I know that I can't use it as a switcher but I figured that I would be at least be able to plug in 2 sources at the same time and when I want to use one or the other, I could just simply turn on whatever device I want to use. It seems that once I even plug in both HDMI cables at the same time without the any of the cables being even connected to the source, the screen blacks out. This device never worked for me...

Didn't Work for Me
I wanted to try using this to split the signal from my Scientific Atlanta cable box to both my receiver and my television. That probably sounds weird, but I wanted to be able to watch the cable box without needing to always have the receiver turned on, while at the same time having the option to quickly switch to the receiver for surround sound. Unfortunately, the cable box detects that the signal is being split and will not output at all with more than one HDMI cable connected to the splitter.

I gave the splitter a 5 because it didn't work for the purpose that I wanted it to, but I'm sure it's a fine product for very particular uses.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello,

Sorry for the trouble with the HDMI splitter, unfortunately we do not recommend passive splitters when using a receiver. A powered splitter would serve this purpose much better, we also recommend using 24awg cables when splitting a hdmi signal.

Thank you

No problem - I realized it probably wouldn't work but wanted to try it since it was cheap and I don't want to spend the money on a powered splitter. Thanks!

Fine for what it is...
Pros: Passive splitter... does it's job fine with products that do not require HDMI handshake or HDCP compliance to operate. This means it may be useful with computer video (if the computers have HDMI in/out) but not much else. Consumer video products (TV, audio receivers, Blu-ray players, all require handshake and HDCP - copy protection).

Cons: You get no sound or video when used with consumer televisions, A/V receivers, A/V surround processors, or Blu-ray disc players (unless they are illegal, or illegally modified).

Pros and Cons says it all.

I went cheap and got this splitter. The Job was to split Directv HD box to a 32" tv and a 19" HD TV 30 feet away. I could get it to work but the results werent reliable- if I turned one tv on before the other, no sound. If I tried to use one tv without the other, no signal.
BUY A POWERED SPLITTER- I did, to replace this one, and now Im happy.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello,

Thank you for your review. You are correct in buying a powered splitter as a passive splitter may not work correctly with devices that already have a compatibility issues with a splitter in the first place. I would suggest only going with a passive splitter if your runs are short and that you are using reliable devices. As sometimes DirecTV has issues with our cables. Thank you

Perfect for recording xbox
I needed to split my signal from my Xbox 360 so that I could play with no lag while recording at the same time. I decided to cheap out on the powered splitters and hoped that this cheap passive converter would work despite some of the negative reviews.

Surprisingly, it works absolutely perfect. No lag or degradation to be found. I used the shortest cables I could, which could be why others had problems.

The one thing that didn't work (which I was almost certain wouldn't) is that I couldn't split a DVI source to DVI and HDMI.

Anyhow another great product from monoprice and save me $50!

No go with 2 Vizio tvs and a Dish vip622...

This product didn't work for my setup. We have 2 vizio TVs and were hoping to split the output from a DISH vip622. The splitter wokred just fine provided both TVs were on at the same time. If the second TV was off, the 1st TV wouldn't get the signal.

Most likely due to DHCP. Decided to go with HDMI out to the 1st TV and component out to the second TV.

Not monoprice's fault. I'm still a huge fan of this company as are most of the people in my family.

Monoprice has a lot of really great products, thisis not one of them. I found that there was as signiicant loss of signal using this splitter. It may be usable in some circumstances, but not to send a HD signal to two HDTVs any distance apart.

This product will probably work ok for short runs of cable but, unfortunately I had problems with it. Being new to HDMI technology, I wasn't aware that I could have trouble with using this splitter with a 25 foot cable. After chatting with their tech support and going along with their recommendation for using a powered splitter, I am having no problems now. Monoprice has great tech support, so, if you are unsure about any of their products, check them out because they are very helpfull. And if you have any problems with their products like I did, they will work with you and solve it.

not worth it
I ordered two of these assuming one wouldn't work with all the bad reviews. Guess what neither worked. One didn't work at all the other passed video but no audio.

if you'd like to question my background, I've been working in A/V for over ten years, currently working on a outdoor display system that cost over 30million to install, I'm the operator. I've done low budget production, network production, tech support for Microsoft employees on campus...yes I knew what I was ordering and am disappointed.

If anyone can recommend a powered unit that actually works I would appreciate it, I'd rather not spend $200 on a Geffen unit (but at least I know it will work, I use about 12 DVI splitters in my current job).

*shrug* consumer equipment...

Hi,

Sorry for the difficulties with the splitters. Passive HDMI splitters can be hit or miss due to the unpredictabitility of how the HDCP is programmed into different devices. Try PID# 4921. We seem to get pretty good feedback on that one and it seems to be the most reliable of our powered HDMI splitters.

However, once I turned on the second TV I lost sound on the first and did not get any sound on the second. So in the end this will not work with Dish Network DRV's.

Used splitter for a 6 run to my 50 panasonic plasma and a 40 run to my 42 panasonic plasma. Struggled for two weeks with having to disconnect cables then reattach to get signal from direct tv receiver to both sets. By trial and error I finally found that if I turn the 50 panny on first then turn on the 42 panny I would receive a signal for both. If I turned on the 42 on first, I would not receive a signal to either tv. I am now very happy with this splitter. You may have to try different combinations of powering on to receive signal.

Only 720p and doesnt pass Audio
I bought this hoping i could split the audio/video from my source to a full 8 channel receiver which feeds the TV for when i want all the speakers going for a movie. But i also wanted to run HDMI direct to the TV so i could use headphones and not need to turn on the receiver and waste that power.

Well, first off this splitter does pass through video but it will only go up to 720p, it wont support 1080p, i just get a no signal error on the TV running through this splitter (it works fine without the splitter). I could live with 720p support, i was willing to accept that but it doesnt pass through audio at all. So there is no audio going to the receiver.

So this product works if all you want to do is send 720p video to two screens, but if youre looking for 1080p support or audio support, dont waste your money.

I was trying to split the HDMI output from my Yamaha RX633 receiver to my Panasonic AE1000 projector and my Panasonic TC-37LZ85 LCD monitor. Neither display would show a signal from that set up. I also tried connecting the splitter from each of my source components to see if it would work. Form the Panasonic BR35 DVD player it would power the Projector correctly but the LCD monitor only got snow. From the SA8300HD DVR it would work for a second to the projector and then the DVR would shut off the picture and send out a message saying the display was not HCCP compliant. So I am happy to see it worked for others, but my Panasonic displays did not like the split signal from is splitter.

Does not work
I intended to split a relatively short (6ft) HDMI run from a TV STB between TV and AV receiver. The TV would show something for a split second and then an error message cant use HDMI - no HDCP. There was nothing coming through to the receiver. Great idea but needs more work.

Works - Sort Of (Not with Two Displays on at Same Time)
I was interested in trying to use this to drive two TVs (A Vizio in the kitchen and a Sony SXRD in the adjacent Family room) from a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR. It works fine when either of the TVs is off - but I get a HDCP error when BOTH TVs are on (which is what I was trying to do). It may be that some might not have this problem with another signal source - but it is a clear issue with the SA8300HD.

Choppy video
This splitter didnt work with and xbox or a Moto DCH3416 STB. The video was completely gone with the STB and the video out of the xbox was choppy and had horizontal lines.
The item is cheap enough to give it a try but didnt work in my case.

Splitter only works when using both outputs
In order for the splitter to work correctly, you need to have both output terminals sending a signal to two video devices and both these video devices need to be on in order to see the video. If I turn one video device off, the video goes away on the other video device.

Tried Everything, but Didnt work for me
I plugged two TVs into one DVD player. I know you cannot have both TVs on at once.

One TV powered ON & the other TV powered OFF gives snow and a discolored picture.

Tried everything, but apparently it depends on the equipment.

The response from monoprice is good and should be on their description

Unfortunately, due to the current state of the technology, results using an HDMI splitter can be mixed. Especially passive splitters which reply on the individual devices ability to negotiate a 3 way handshake. Unfortunately not all devices are programmed to deal with this properly and will sometimes default to an HDCP error state. To put it simply, some devices will consider a split of the signal to be a copyright violation, so it may decide that only one display should show at a time or may block the content entirely. This type of situation is considered to be a device compatibility issue and can not be fixed short of a firmware update by the individual device manufacturers. Sorry if the passive splitter was not able to provide the results you were seeking.

If your problem stems from using a passive splitter, you may want to consider using one of our powered splitter options. Powered splitters have chips that will help negotiate the handshake. However, there is no way to know for sure if this solution will work except to try it.

Does not work. Wanted to us this between my Onkyo 605 and my Samsung 5265, and optoma HD70. Did not connect to my 5265 at all even when plugged in by its self. HD70 worked with enough snow to fill Alaska. This was from a PS3and Toshiba HD-A2 ran into my 605. Buy an amp with dual outs, this item is a bust.

product does not work for my setup. One xbox360 to two hd tvs , one panasonic , one mitsu. Both have to be powered on just to get video , does not see a hd signal , no audio on either due to hdcp authentication errors.

All i wanted was something i could use to switch from one tv to the other without having to plug and unplug cables but this product does not do the job.

Save your money and buy a real powered switch.

This was connected as a splitter using 1 meter cables on each output, including Monster brand. It would pass video with one port connected up to 1080i/30 but would not pass 1080p/60. When second output port was connected, everything died, even with 480P signals. An HDMI certified test generator and TV were used in the test. Basically this is useless.

This just made both my displays flash as the searched for an intermittent signal. This definitely didn''t work. Too bad, though. I hoped it would.

This item is not working. I tried to split signals from my HTPC to two LCD TVs but failed. Tried the unplug/plug tricks, tried 720P and 1080p... only one tv can get signal. Can I return this? Have been loyal customer with monoprice for a long time and this is first thing disappointed me.
