Easy fix for the stuck button
Pros: it works

Cons: quality control

This is an update on my previous review. Actually it's pretty easy to fix the "stuck button" problem. The button get stuck b/c it's too high from the switch below. Loosening the 4 screws and you can disasseble the box. You only need to cut some duct tapes and stick them to the real swtich below the button as a padding. Adjust the height of the padding by increasing or descresing the number of layers of the duct tape. Now both of my two switche boxes work without a problem.

Usb switch
Pros: Everything
Little led to show which device it's connected to.
Simple and minimal.

Cons: None

It's exactly what it says it is. A simple button based usb 2.0 switch. Worked straight out of the box and it's running just as expected.

The first time I pressed the button it got stuck. Even if it didn't get stuck, that little button couldn't survive a day of me switching my keyboard between two computers.

Hello CrPost,

Thank you for your review and my apologies for the issues you have experienced with PID 2994. Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have received a defective product.
Now if you'd like, I can help setup an RMA for a replacement. If you would like me to proceed with the RMA, all I would need is the order # this switch is under. Sorry again for the trouble and thanks in advance!

Did not work with my old computer (Windows XP)
Pros: The switch is very small and simple to set-up.

Cons: Can't connect to my old computer. Exit cable in the front

I needed a switch to connect my two desktop PC to my printer. It work with my new PC (Windows 8), but this switch does not work with my old PC. Wen connected, I got the following messages : "Cannot communicate with All-in-One" and "USB device not recognized", I tried both downstream port. However, when the PC is connected directly to the printer (using the same USB cable), I can print as usual. Please, does anyone have a suggestion?

Excellent Switch!
Pros: Works exactly as described.

Cons: None

I have an 8 port USB hub that I had been manually switching between my work laptop and my desktop PC when switching machines in my home office. I'm ecstatic I bought this. The price was right, and it works exactly as described. I've had no issues whatsoever.

Excellent product.

Pros: If it worked could be useful.

Cons: Did not work at all

Product did not work even closely as to how it should have worked. Had to pay shipping costs both ways which was almost as much as the product itself. Will only use Monoprice.com when I know a product will work.

Pros: Compact, easy to use.

Cons: It does not work with windows eight.

I have purchased several items over the past year. Your prices are a life saver for teachers. However this USB 2.0 Sharing Switch does not work on my Windows 8 OS.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hello,

My apologies for the issues you ran into with getting the switch to work with windows 8. I will pass this onto our Product Management team to review and test for any possible issues. If you like and don't have any other use for the cable I can issue an RMA for a return, I would just need an order number to get things started. Again my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

It works fine on my window 7 computers. There appears to be other issues with window 8 with programs in my school district....I am not sure it is your product... however...thank you for your time.

by Monoprice Administrator
Hi,

That's good to hear and it's a possibility Win 8 doesn't quite have all their SP(service packs) up to date and once they do things will have less issues. If you need this specifically for Win 8 and it isn't going to work for you I can issue an RMA for a return, I would just need an order number to get things processed.

Thank you

Cons: The push button is too small.

I can recommend this for people who wants to use 2 computers with 1 USB hub.

Okay...
Pros: Cheap

Cons: Lasted one year

I would love this thing if the button was made to last longer, and if there were two buttons instead of one. Right now I have to delicately press the button or else it will get twisted and stuck inside the device.

Works great for a 2 laptop desk
Pros: Small. Comes with 2x USB-A-B cables. Looks nice.

Cons: When used as a KM switch, there's a slight lag (I know it's not the actual intended use of the switch, but lots of us are using it this way)

So at my desk at work, I have two laptops. One is my client-supplied laptop, the other is my employer-supplied laptop.

I wanted to be able to use just one keyboard/mouse setup between the two laptops. Perhaps a dedicated KVM switch would have been better, but I didn't want to install software onto my client laptop.

So a little research lead me to the USB switch. My keyboard has two extra USB ports, so I plug the mouse into the keyboard and the keyboard into the front of the USB switch. Then I attach both laptops to the back of the switch and I'm ready to go.

There is a slight delay in responsiveness after switching from one laptop to the other, but that's sort of expected. Afterall, you're basically plugging/unplugging a USB device and Windows has to take a few seconds to register a new device.

Overall, it's a good and inexpensive option.

Works very well
Pros: Excellent value, easy to use, reliable

I use this for two computers and one keyboard and mouse. My keyboard has a usb port on it, which I plug my mouse into, so I am able to switch the two between computers. Switching is quite fast and is only limited by the speed at which the computer can register the connection (usually a few seconds). It sure beats manually unplugging and plugging back in. It comes with 2 usb A to B cables (6 feet long).

works well, good value
Pros: Good value for money, works well, red-green indicator is good to quickly verify, USB cables included.

Cons: 2 connections on one side, 1 on the other

Simple function implemented well, good price, helpful that 2 USB cables are included. Switching a keyboard with USB mouse attached between a Win7 and a WinXP machine, takes only about 3 seconds for both devices to be recognized on other system. Only downside is having connections on both sides of box, for most installs having all three on one side would be better to make cable arrangements neater, but this is fairly minor.

Pros: Cheap.

No power adapter required.

Cons: Minor complaints:

The switch should be on the side to allow for stacking

Exactly as described, no surprises. Does the job just fine, and for the price it's a great deal.

USB switching device
Pros: This switch allows me to leave a printer USB hook-up to my desktop computer and also to temporarily hook-up my laptop to the printer. With the switch I do not have to go behind either the desktop or printer to change cables, I just hook-up the laptop and push the switch button.

Cons: No significant Cons. I did not expect one of the cables to have the mini USB end, but that is no problem as I have several standard USB-A to USB-B cables.

The switch uses a red LED for one line and a green LED for the other line. Only the active LED will be illuminated. The unit came with two USB cables: one a standard A to B USB, the other a standard B to a mini A. I guess that is so you can either hook-up a printer or a camera. The switch is small and I used Velcro to attach it to my printer shelf. This switch really fit a specific need that I have, and it has worked without any problems.

Pros: Reasonable price
Works great

Cons: The connectors would be more convenient all on the back of the box
The switch button could be bigger

This switch is exactly what I needed to connect two PCs to a single mouse/keyboard set. The mouse and keyboard plug to a USB hub which in turn plugs into this switch. Works like a charm.
Minor negatives:
If the connectors were all on the back of the box, it would make cable management easier.
The switch button works fine, but it is unnecessarily small.

Works as advertised
Pros: - price
- size
- effectiveness
- did I mention price

Cons: Nothing that I see for now. except that, the switch has to be fully depressed to work. I'm not sure how long it will last.

I have been using for over a month and love the product. I took two points away, 'cause they only send one D-cable, the other one is for a mini D or something.
Works wonderfully. I use it with a USB hub that connects my keyboard and mouse - to my desktop and laptop. I work at a desk, and its nice to be able to share my keyboard and mouse between my desktop and laptop. For those of you geeks thinking "Synergy", it won't work for my setup 'cause both laptop and desktop are on separate networks.

Pros: Works Awesome

Cons: none

I use this for my Logitec G15 keyboard, I have two computers (a docked laptop and a desktop) Then my mouse is plugged into the USB on the keyboard, so with the press of onle one button the Keyboard and mouse flick over to the next machine without any lag it is instant. then I just change the source on my monitor over to HDMI and away I go. a KVM would not suit me in this case but this works great

Pros: Simple to set-up and use easy to use did exactly as intended.

Cons: none

I needed a switch for my old printer that would not network with Vista or Windows 7. Set it up and it works perfectly. Now I don't have to unplug the printer USB cable every time I want to print from my laptop, I can just plug into the extra USB cord, flick the switch, and viola - printing!

Quite pleased
Pros: - Works as described.
- Makes my life much easier being able to work from any combination of work laptop, PC, media PC, and/or cable box between two TV's without having to constantly rewire everything.
- Per the remote, unlike others who noted that it's spotty beyond very close ranges, I've had no trouble with thatworks fine for me.

Cons: - My older PC doesn't seem to cooperate with it too well. (Specifically: if it, 1, goes to sleep or into screensaver mode on one display, then, 2, I switch displays and then, 3, try to bring it out of sleep [or screensaver] mode, it won't recognize the new display) But I think this is more a problem with the fact that the PC's about 7 or 8 years old. All my newer machines work on it without a problem.
- I believe some have complained about there being a brief interruption on BOTH displays whenever a new input is selected on either ONE of the displays. This holds true, but I don't find it bothersome (frankly, I'm pleased HDMI switching/sharing works at all). However, if the wife is watching the TV and I wish to switch the inputs on my display, I will wait for a commercial break before I do so. So I could see this being a nuisance to those who may be constantly flipping around their inputs.

Great product, and keeps me pleased (as usual) with Monoprice's products and prices. (See Pros & Cons for specifics.)

This plus 4port USB hub = Perfect USB Switch
Pros: Cheap and it works great. I added a 4 port USB Hub and was able to switch Keyboard, mouse and printer.

Cons: None really. You may have a slight delay on a switch from PC to PC, but no longer than a delay of plugging and unplugging a device.

Cheap, works, and with single USB switch, just hit one button to trade Keyboard, Mouse and other devices from pc to pc.

Perfect solution if you already have monitors with more than one video input and built in abilities to switch sources. I didn't need a full KVM, just USB KM switch and this worked great.

Pros: Does exactly what it is intended to do, and does it well. Even includes the 2 additional cables necessary to hook it up right out of the package. It's small, doesn't require an additional power adapter, and even has an LED to indicate which channel is being used (see below). I'm using it to "share" an old printer that Win7 wouldn't recognize across my local network, nor would it allow to be shared with my WinXP computer on the same network - -this switch allows me to share it between the 2 computers with just the press of a button.

Cons: No real cons.

I have only 2 minor complaints 1) that all connections be on the back instead of 2 on the back and 1 on the front, and 2) I wish that the indicator light would indicate "A" or "B" rather than just lighting up as green or red. These 2 minor things are the only reason I gave this item a 9 rather than a 10.

Helpful device
Pros: Modest footprint, time on target, nice price and labor saving.

Cons: None other than care is needed with switch.

This is a pretty helpful device if there is something that needs to be shared between two computers. I use it currently to share a mouse and keyboard between two computers - second computer is used every now and then - but this a great way to easily swap over the keyboard and mouse. Saves a lot of work by not having to remove the receiver from C1 and move to C2 and then back again when finished. Saves a huge amount of work if swapping is done more than once a week.

I use two monitors but I intend to buy a monoprice monitor switch in the near future and remove the second monitor from the desktop.

Care needs to be taken when depressing the switch to change the setting. The switch is delicate and would not tolerate hard use.

Pretty good value for the money paid.

Works fine, awkward connector placement
Pros: Works fine
Good value

Cons: Connector placement makes wiring really awkward. I wish someone would make a switch where the actual button is in the front and all wires exit in the rear.

Works fine, I use it to switch the receiver for a wireless mouse & keyboard between two PCs. One PC sometimes looses the connection, but that's probably a problem of the PC not the switch.

Great little thing
Pros: Small, looks nice, solid, no unneeded bells and whistles

Cons: When used together with a USB hub, might not be compatible with some old motherboards/controllers.

It works fine, takes very little space (mine hangs on the display stand). The green LED is on when you switch to port A, and red LED is for the port B. You can connect a USB hub to it, but it might not work with some old system boards. It didn't work with my Intel DG965WH, but works fine with my Mac and Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H board. Mind you, switching a single device has no problem with older motherboards, problem might arise only when connecting a hub (I tried 3 hubs, so it's not related to a hub itself). All in all it's a great solution to switching between two computers.

Pros: Switch between two PCs easily

Cons: Everytime you switch, it has a lag that it's removing and adding device

The switch works great. Nice easy and convienent. I use this to swap my keyboard between two different PCs. Only thing is that sometimes there is a lag as if I unplug the device and plug it in to the other PC. Would be great if the PC could just see that something is plugged in all the time so it would not have the reconnecting lag.

Pros: -Not expensive
-Does the job well

Cons: -Casing seems a little flimsy
-Somewhat awkward design

I bought this so that I could connect a wireless keyboard/mouse receiver to switch between two computers like a KVM switch (minus the video...I didn't need an actual KVM switch since my LCD monitor is able to take in two inputs from two different computers and I could simply change the source by pressing a button on the monitor itself). It works really well and is able to switch between computers quickly (there is a slight 0.5-1 second delay but this is expected).

While there is only one USB input port, you could easily expand the number of ports by connecting a USB hub. I wouldn't recommend using it to hook up an external hard drive, but it would work really well with printers and scanners (as well as keyboards and mice).

The casing does look a little flimsy (it's made out of plastic) and they could have used a better colour for it. The design is also a little awkward and could be improved by placing the ports closer together so the wires don't have to go all the way around to the opposite side of the casing. But these are minor issues and at this price I'm not complaining.

Overall, a great product and it does its job well day in and day out.

Great Product for 2 computers!
Pros: This worked great to share a USB Hub full of devices between my Windows PC and Macbook Pro.

Cons: USB Powered scanner is a little finiky on it. Won't power on 100% of the time, need to unplug and replug.

Would be nice if all 3 connections were on one side so cables aren't coming off of it on the front and back. But that's mostly an aesthetic reason.

Pros: Great price
Great Monoprice service

Cons: None

This works perfectly for sharing USB devices between 2 computers. I am sharing a printer between a Mac and a PC. Just push the little button to switch between computers and print away. My only minor quibble is that I would prefer all the USB ports to be on the back of the device. The port from the printer- switch is on the front. The two ports out to the computers are on the back. Not a major deal, but would make it easier to organize the rats nest of cables I have.

I had tried several other more complex options for sharing an all-in-one printer/scanner between 2 computers and none worked. This switch was inexpensive, easy to install, and worked perfectly.

Sharing Fujitsu Scanner
The only complication during the Fujitsu driver setup was that the scanner had to be directly connected to each workstation for the software to detect it. After the drivers were installed I was able to add the switch. Only 8 out of 10 because sometimes switching from one computer to another doesn't work. But it's only sporadic. $12.50 to share a $1000 scanner between 2 workstations is still a great deal.

Printer Switch
This switch works fantastic and as planned. After spending an hour on the phone with (worthless) HP customer support, they (incorrectly) told me my printer was unfixable.

They said they could help me no more and I need to buy another printer. After several hours of tinkering, I discovered the wireless feature of my HP printer stopped working. After re-setting up without wireless, and using standard cable, printer worked. So I purchased this switch to have a "free" cable whereby we could plug it into any laptop (that was previously working with the wireless feature).

Great Deal. Great Price. And it comes with cables.

Printer Switch
I purchased the switch to allow me to use a single multi-function printer between two PCs. It is hardwired between the two PCS with the two supplied wires. My own printer wire connects to the switch. It does the job as advertised. It is small and unobtrusive. It requires pressing a button on the switch to alternate between printers. Given the price (including shipping), it is truly a bargain.

Works fine, but has a few drawbacks
I've been using this for months. At one time I was moving computer stuff around and I didn't get around to reconnecting the switch right away - it was a pain not to be able to use it. It seemed like the printer was always connected to wrong computer. Yeah, there are other ways to share printers, but problems, too.

My main problem is that the switch is quite lightweight and not very big. It sometimes gets a bit lost among all the cords and stuff on my desk. If I was ambitious I'd find a way to velcro it or something to the printer to make life easier. Duct tape keeps occurring to me . . . not elegant, but it would probably work.

I'll soon be buying a new one - to give to someone else.

works well so far
I was looking for an affordable way to share my USB MFD (multifunction print/scan/copy/fax device) between the two PCs on my desk, and this works pretty well.

This device uses a physical push-button toggle switch (so make sure you install it somewhere that you can reach the actual switch box as there's no hot-key support), and no driver or software is needed. The switch won't even show up in the USB stack on the host. As far as the host is concerned, pushing the switch is no different from physically plugging in or unplugging the attached USB device(s).

The light is green when it's on port 1 and red when it's on port 2. There is no indication of status other than if the light is on you know there's power coming from the USB host port (the device itself does not require or accept a power cord). The device is also very light weight. It would have been nice if it was weighted down so that the cables don't push it around or off the desk when you bump them.

All in all it does what I wanted it to do. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm happy with the purchase and happy with Monoprice.com as always.

Great price and does the job
I have two computers at work on separate unconnected networks. I use a USB flash drive to transfer files between the two computers and both CPUs are under my desk. Having to crawl under my desk several times a day quickly became a nuisance. I've been looking for a product like this for months. I tested one other similar device (Aluratek 1 Port USB 2.0 Auto Sharing Switch). It was more than twice the price and just didn't work. I would have to press the switch button 8-12 times before the device would make the switch. The one from Monoprice worked as soon as I plugged it into my computers. Occasionally I have to press the switch twice, but that's very rare (maybe 1/50 times). It's totally worth the money.

Happy so far
So far, this is working just fine.

The switch button does feel a little cheap, but no problems so far.

It has two different led colors so you can easily tell which device you're currently switched to.

It came with two usb cables, so overall it's a nice package.

Terrific
This terrific little switch does exactly what it is supposed to do, at a SUPER low price. It does not have 'auto switching' or 'hotkey switching', but it doesn't CLAIM to have them. It is small, cleanly designed, and seemingly well made. I seriously doubt that you could buy the two included USB cables at Office Depot or Best Buy for the same price as this whole package. I anticipate needing a couple of more USB switches soon, and I won't even LOOK anywhere else. THANK you, Monoprice, for another problem well solved.

First, the product doesn''t mention the length of the USB cables, which is 5ft.

It is working for me, sharing between a WinXP and a Linux/Debian computer, but I am already having issues with it after less than a month of use. When I first got it, the switch worked fine, but now the buttons are backwards. Somehow the switch in the A position enables the cord attached to the B port now.

It feels quite cheap, and with this new behavior, I don''t know if I would recommend it.
