works well
|
Pros: works and is low cost
Cons: blue LEDs are very bright
works to allow me to switch the hdmi input to my ASUS V242H between my desktop and my laptop. I also have the 4826 DP (DisplayPort) Male to HDMI® Female Adapter on my laptop and the 2029 DVI-D Single Link Male to HDMI® Female adapter on my desktop. I reduced the brightness of the bright blue LED by cutting a strip from the stick-on sunshade for my car and stuck it over the row of LEDs.

Not worth it
|
Pros: It's smallish.
I bought this because I have several game systems and a DVR that I wanted to hook into my one-HDMI-input television. I bought all brand new HDMI cables from Monoprice to work with it. It worked for about a week. After that, I couldn't go to any of the four switches without the signal cutting out within five minutes. Static, or worse, a complete loss of signal where the device isn't seen at all by the television. Do no waste your money.

Pros: The remote
Cons: Worked for a month then it started changing to a different input while your watching something.
Monoprice has some great A/V gear, but this is not one of them. I would wait for the new version, hopefully the bugs are worked out.

Just an OK switch
|
Pros: - Basic functions of the switch work - 5 ports, 1 of which conveniently located on the front
Cons: - Does not work with my DVR/no picture [Comcast Motorola DCX3400HDMI Splitter (PID 8204)HDMI Over Cat5E (PID 8008)HDMI Switch (PID 8463)TV] Note: Minus the switch, the DVR does work with my TV. - Auto switching doesn't work with the two devices currently connected to it (Samsung Blu-ray player and Apple TV) - LEDs are obscenely bright - On/Off button is only located on the remote
As a basic switch this product works. The product is constructed well and the front port is truly convenient. However, there are too many cons to make this a great value and it doesn't fully function as intended for me. It doesn't work with my DVR setup and auto switching isn't reliable. The indicator lights are way too bright and the power cord is inconveniently short (I have this on top of a dresser). Since the on/off button only exists on the remote, you'd better not lose it and hope it never breaks!

HDMI switch 5 inputs - 1 output
|
Pros: Like the compact design and the number of inputs which seem to increase daily. Most devices today have an HDMI connection. Like the ease to switch from device to device without having to unplug and plug the desired device.
Cons: Two things are a slight detraction. 1) I have to tell it which input to select. It's supposed to be automatic but I think because one of the inputs is my cable box it becomes the default. I suspect even when the box is off it is somehow sending a signal. 1a) Sometimes this requires you to turn the TV off and back on to recognize the new connection. Again, this could be my TV and not the device. 2) The blue power light is too bright. Distracts you when you are watching anything. I put the remote in front of it and it works great to block the light.
For the price I paid and the increased capabilities to switch from device to device I would heartily recommend it.

Not so good...
|
Pros: - auto-switching is very cool - when the unit worked, I did not see any loss of quality
Cons: - bright lights - HDMI cable fit is looser than I would like - stopped working after a month or so
This HDMI switch worked great in the beginning. The auto-switching works as advertised. However, after about a month or so, problems started.
Suddenly, it would not work with my XBOX. I was able to finally get it to work, but there was no real reason for the failure. My TV showed incompatible signal messages, but it worked again after changing HMDI slots. Everything on the TV and XBOX remained the same, so it was definitely the switch. Not a big deal, but now Netflix will not play via XBOX live when it runs through this switch. I get an error message in Netflix. Hooking the XBOX directly to the TV eliminates the problem.
Again, not a big deal, except the switch will not output a signal from my Fios DVR/ Cable Box. So, now it's useless.
Due to these issues, I do not recommend this switch. I would return it, but I no longer have the original box.

Switches inputs randomly
|
Pros: Does what it's supposed to most of the time
Cons: Switches inputs randomly!
I have the switch hooked up to several video game consoles. Only one console is powered on at a time. None of them output video when they are powered off. I use only Monoprice 28 AWG cables (some 6', some 1.5'). My equipment is even plugged into a Monoprice-brand surge protector. It's Monoprice all the way down! Which makes it even more surprising that it doesn't work right.
Sometimes when I am playing a game, it will suddenly and without warning switch to input 1. I have nothing plugged into input 1 (that's because it's the one on the front - I only use the inputs on the back). This happens regardless of which input I was using (2-5). This is extremely frustrating when I am playing a time-sensitive game and it causes me to lose because I have been interrupted mid-action and can no longer see the video output. Some days this switch will work fine. Other days the video will cut out every 5 minutes.
I see now that the description has red text advising the use of 24 AWG cables (lower AWG is 'better', I guess?). I am fairly sure that this advisory was not present on the product page when I bought this switch, because I bought a bunch of 28 AWG cables in the same order and I took a long time deliberating over the purchase to make sure I had it right.
I don't know whether the problem is that I'm using the 'wrong' cables or if I just have a bad unit, but it seems ridiculous to me that Monoprice's most popular product that they are primarily known for (cheap HDMI cables) are apparently not compatible with this unit.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review. And I am truly sorry to hear of your experience you have had with this product.
For now, if possible, please try a couple of troubleshooting techniques with me to see if we can resolve your issue.
Have you tried a different set of devices?
What about another power outlet?
Have you tried the devices in different ports?
Please let me know if the problems still occur. If it does, I can assist you in obtaining a replacement or a return RMA to see if a replacement will work better. We do have a lifetime warranty on non-electronics and cables as well as a 1 year warranty for electronics. And obtaining a replacement is of no additional cost. If you want to continue with an RMA just please provide the order# and if you wanted to return it or obtain a replacement. Thank you!

Great Product
|
Pros: Works great!!! Awesome product. Hooks up easily and worked immediately with no issues. Works with Apple TV.
It works with Apple TV. I bought this HDMI switch because it was recommended for Apple TV. I had a switch that was about 2 years old, and it wouldn't work with the apple tv that I had recently purchased. It works great. I have satellite, blue ray, and apple tv hooked up to this switch.I have to switch the inputs with the remote control that was included with the switch. Sometimes, I have to power it off and on again to get the satellite to work. I don't have this problem with the blue ray or the Apple tv. This coiuld be a satellite issue.

As advertised
|
Pros: - Small, compact. - Feels well made. - Quick, automatic switching. - 5 Inputs.
Cons: - Ridiculously bright LEDs.
Works exactly as advertised and reviewed. Great switch. Automatic switching appears to work flawlessly. The tiny remote is a bit of an annoyance, as is the LEDs. The tiny blue indicator LEDs will easily illuminate an entire room. Passes 3D through the switch with perfectly with 24 AWG HDMI 1.4a cabling. No issues to report.

Great switch
|
Pros: Auto-switching works pretty well, makes it easy to forget the switch is even there.
Cons: The same blue LED everyone talks about. HOLY ****. Did no one think about that when designing it? I used some white electrical tape, so I can still faintly see the LEDs if I need to, but it's usually dim enough not to bother me.

Decent product
|
Pros: does what it promises to do.
Cons: the 5th hdmi in is on the front, making cable management tricky. automatic selection doesn't work if we have always on devices, would be better if it has a switch. I would prefer a actual button than a touch for switching, touch makes it accident prone.
All I've said above, it's a decent device. price is a little expensive, but we make that decision when we make purchases.

HDMI Switch the Tops
|
Pros: Switches channels to powered on devices automatically. Compact size. 5 inputs. Price!!
Cons: LED display is way to bright and distracting!
Overall I recommended this HDMI switch. The quality and price can not be beat. It works great and as per usual Monoprices quality and pricing are the best!
This switch will give you a perfect picture, no distortion of break down or picture quality. It allows for a clear HD picture in 3DHD. It also allows you to be lazy. If you are too far from the remote and you turn on your device it will automatically switch to the channel of the device you turned on. Plenty of inputs and its small size allows for easy concealment.
The power lights, bright blue for on and red for off are extremely bright LED's. In fact they are too bright and are distracting. I had to hide the switch behind my entertainment center which then doesn't allow me a clear shot for the remote when I want to turn it on. It is so bright in fact that it lights up the wall behind my entertainment center so that even though it is hidden you can still see a glow from behind. Very distracting and needs to be toned down a bit!

Great switch and features for the price
|
Pros: Works great with my Apple TV 2nd gen, 1st gen PS3, latest XBOX 360. It auto switches between devices that are on perfectly. Remote is a nice addition.
Cons: Not a real con but since the LED's are bright and it comes with a remote you can't really point them away. I have found though that just covering them with the remote once I'm on a specific signal works great to block them.

Pros: 5 inputs on/off remote great Monoprice Price
Cons: my wife says LED's too bright

works fine manually
|
Pros: works fine manually
Cons: does not auto switch as advertised
This is my third or fourth different model HDMI switch to use from monoprice. Others would not switch when directed to do so, they would fail to hook up. One, which was twice the price would not even transfer Dolby Digital or DTS audio this one I am using separate audio cables to get the audio. As long as I use the remote to switch form one unit to the other, it works flawlessly, a real treat considering I spent months earlier, sometimes for over 20 minutes to get it to connect my blue ray. I give it a seven because it fails to switch automatically as advertised.

Works well, don't think I would buy it again
|
Pros: Works very well, does what it is supposed to do and is easy to use, but it has two major flaws that detract significantly from it's good points.
Cons: LED's are insanely bright, as in "blind you if you look directly at them from up close" bright. I've covered them with 6 layers of masking tape and they are reasonably OK but are still the brightest LED's visible compared to every other piece of equipment I have.
Although the switch allows manually selecting which device you want to view it does not have a manual on/off switch. This means you are forced to use the remote to turn it on or off. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but in the long run it it would make it so much better and usable to be able to do everything either manually OR remotely. If you lose the remote or it quits working you are out of luck.
Overall the switch works and does what I need it to do. I was irritated that I had to cover the LED's just to dim them enough to be able to watch TV without being constantly distracted. Not having a manual on/off switch is not a deal breaker, but it would a much better product if it had that feature.

Paper Weight
|
Pros: can not give one good thing about this item, other than it looked good!!
Cons: did not work was a waist of money and did not do what they said it would,I bought a switch so I could switch HDMI products but it would only work if I only had 1 thing plugged in at a time as soon as I plugged in another witch I needed 4 things it would show the screen in double and fuzzy, and worst of all took about 2 hours to set up, simple right. oh ya I am an electronics technician as well sorry guys {NO GOOD}
I will order from this company one more time to give the another chance but so far not impressed with them, They offered something that would not even closely do what it said it would do. so now it is in the electronics pile of junk after buying this peace of crap I went out and spent over $600 on a new stereo instead to do the same thing if they told me anywhere that the switch would not work I more than likely would have taken there advise first. and probably brought the right thing from them
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Lucas,
Thank you for your review and my apologies for the issues you have experienced with PID 8463. Now if I may ask, what HDMI devices are we connecting here? Do they all have this same issue? What length and AWG are the HDMI cables being used? Also, has this been the case since you received them? Sorry for all the questions but this will help narrow down the issue. Sorry again for the trouble and thanks in advance!

Works pretty well
|
Pros: Works pretty well - only have to manually switch it infrequently.
Cons: Have to manually switch it - would be nice if it was totally automatic for me.
I have a Wii, Xbox 360, and a cable box that all plug into this device. The output is fed into an HDMI receiver and then pumped out to the TV. I have the cable box on the lowest priority port (5), and the game consoles on higher priority ports. When I turn on one of the consoles the stereo and TV automatically switch over to it, and when I turn off the console, it goes back to cable. It works great, though turning off the 360 sometimes does not switch back to cable and I have to manually switch it. Not sure if that is an issue with the 360 or with the switch, but pressing one button is not a show stopper. :)

Simple
|
Pros: Bought a sound bar with new TV and decided notto install my NAD receiver and 6 Klipsch speakers in new home. Realized the NAD would be a ridiculously expensive HDMI switch but dud not know if such a thing existed. Moon price led mtto this product which is an incredible value for about $25. I can now opt for input from my Apple TV - Blu Ray player - Tivo or Sony DVD recorder with the remote.
Cons: The blue LED is far too bright as other reviewers have noted. Also the switch does not always sense the needed input and go there. A manual input from the remote solves this.
Great value - would pay more for item that did not have above failings.

HDMI Switch
|
Pros: This really works for me. My TV only came with two HDMI connections and as you know that is now inadequate for all the various devices. Easy on/off and auto switching between devices. Connecting very simple and quick.
Cons: Blue ON light really bright. Can be distracting.
With the 5 port you can connect many devices. I gave it a 9 because of the ON blue light being a distraction.

Works great, lights are WAY too bright!
|
Pros: The item works exactly as advertised, switches between my sources without an issue.
Cons: The blue lights on the front identifying the sources are way too bright, I can't place this beside my TV because it feels like there's someone with a blue laser pointing directly into my eyes. Also, a smaller gripe is that the unit is so small and light that the cables decide where the unit will sit.
The only major downside to this switch is the brightness of the lights on the front which I've had to cover with electrical tape, I'd prefer to not have to do that. But, it works exactly as it should and the price was awesome!

Great Product - Wear Shades
|
Pros: This unit is simple to connect, does exactly what it claims to, and the remote even came with a battery (2025).
Cons: The other reviews were right about the bright blue lights on the front. My wife said I was crazy until she sat directly in front of the unit. Nothing a few small pieces of electrical tape can't take care of.
I used this to connect 3 sources directly to a soundbar with 1 HDMI input. Works like a charm.

Works great, lights way too bright
|
Pros: Five ports Signal comes through great Automatic switching Included remote works well
Cons: No physical buttons Automatic switching Lights are WAY too bright
This switch is great for taking up to five HDMI signals and routing them to a single display. It will automatically switch to the proper input, and signal comes through perfectly. I currently have four inputs connected to switch. Since I use it to select a source for video capture, it's great for not having to fuddle around with cables when I want to change what I'm recording from.
It also has an automatic switching feature, which is nice because it will automatically switch to the proper input when you turn on a new device. Unfortunately, this also sometimes will cause a problem because I run the main monitor from my computer through the switcher, and if I turn something on to get ready to capture video it will switch my monitor off without warning.
The included remote has a power button, a button for each input, and a "Next" and "Previous" button. It's nice to have these buttons, but I would have preferred to also have the same buttons on the device itself. It has a touch-sensitive panel-thingy on it that will switch to the next input when you touch it. Buttons like this feel futuristic, but I like the tactile response of pressing an actual button. Also: There is no way (that I've found) to turn this to standby mode without the remote.
Finally, the lights on the front are way too bright. They're bright blue LED lasers of eye-searing retina-destroying light, and you can't turn them down or off. I've had to put a paper in front of it to block the light so I don't blind myself when I glance in the general direction of this switch.

We had an issue with another switch that was not compatible with our cable box. This one worked with no problem. It automatically switches when you turn on a device (cable box, Wii, DVD player, etc.) most of the time, though I have had to switch it manually on occasion. Basically, once we hooked it up, I've pretty much been able to forget about it and it just does what it's supposed to do.

Works great!
|
Cons: Those LEDs are indeed piercing when viewed straight on. They should take these leds and go into the flashlight biz.
Working great for me. I'm using it with DVI-D exclusively so far (3' DVI-D HDMI cables bought here, which I'm also pleased with). I have a 20" monitor (1680x1200). This unit switches between a Mac Book Pro and 4 Google Chromeboxes with no problems, signal is completely normal (as if no switch was there). It's plenty fast to switch inputs, and the remote is nice (can go straight to 1 - 5). The onboard manual switch is actually a solid state, touch sensitive plate that doesn't depress (all you do is touch it- fancy!). I don't know why most KVM or similar solutions are so insanely expensive. This thing is priced right and I was thrilled to find out it's not a case of "there must be some reason the things on this web sight are so cheap".

Pros: Switches nicely between HDMI sources, gets along with Harmony remote. Auto-sensing active port works, if the Harmony doesn't quite get everything right.
Cons: Requires lower gauge cables - plan on spending more money than planned.
Had to return first unit - replacement works great though. A bit of black electrical tape will hide the bright LEDs. No issues with that. Despite having to buy more expensive 24 AWG cables this unit is still a good choice for connecting to a TV with limited HDMI inputs. So far, I have xbox, PS3, and Apple TV plugged in inputs, 2,3, and 4 with no issues.

5x1 HDMI Enhanced Switcher Review
|
Pros: Auto senses my Blu-Ray player when I power it up and switches to that input without me having to do it manually.
Cons: Very intense blue LEDs on the front are so bright I had to dim them quite a bit with some smoked plastic cut up from an old TDK VHS slip case. But now I have to get up real close with the infrared remote control when changing inputs because the smoked plastic blocks the signal if the remote control is too far away.
Works as advertised and helped me tidy up the HDMI cabling on my older Sony LCD projector, which only came with ONE HDMI input. So a switcher was mandatory and I did have a 4-way monoprice switcher before but needed more inputs for other devices I have added recently.

Turn on the bright lights
|
Pros: Great performance Solid build quality Ability to power on/off (most switches are always on unless you unplug them)
Cons: INSANELY bright LEDs Remote uses a CR2025 battery (would prefer AAA)
I got this switch as a replacement for an older version (REV 3.0) that died on me recently (after two years). It works well so far, and is compatible with my devices (Roku XDS, Xbox 360, Sony BDP-350 Blu-ray player). I typically don't like auto-switching on electronics, but it works well on this unit, and isn't too bothersome.
Regarding the blue LEDs — I scoffed at the reviews that have mentioned them, as I've bought a few other Monoprice products that people claimed to have overly bright lights, and I didn't think they were an issue at all. Not the case here! These have got to be the brightest LEDs I have EVER seen on an electronic device. They are absolutely ridiculous, and you almost certainly will need to do something about them.

Pros: No problems... works like a champ! Awesome box for what that is worth to ya'.
Cons: Only one (very) minor complaint... The red light that remains on when the unit is off is too bright. I place a remote in front of it so that it doesn't distract viewers.
Get it... Excellent product for the money.

No more fiddling with cables!
|
Pros: Extremely easy to set up
Cons: The blinding blue light.
After searching around for a switch that I could use with my Apple TV, DVD, Wii, on my TV that did not have all the required HDMI ports... I read about the Monoprice switch. I have not played around with all the features, as I was just excited to not to have to change my HDMI cables around any more, but the ease of install was great. Only down side - even having the unit at the back of the entertainment unit - the blue light on the front is REALLY bright.... totally unecessary - I am going to take other reviewers suggestion and tape it off.

Well worth the price.
|
Pros: Excellent product, I use it for my Computer, DVD Player and Roku box. Nice compact size. Easy set up and operation.
Cons: 1. As everyone says the Blue lights on the from are way way to bright. I turn it off at night as the red led is not as bright. 2. Does not work with AT&T U-Verse as the switcher disrupts HDCP handshake in the chain and the screen flashes between that message and the picture.
I got this because my TV only has 2 HDMI inputs so I put the Switch in one and the TV in the other and everything is OK. If the 2 things above get fixed the in is a 10.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do
|
Pros: I had two other HDMI switches that would not properly display my Panasonic Blu-Ray DVD player, but this one worked beautifully right out of the box.
Cons: The blue LEDs are way too bright. I had to cover them with tape.
For some reason, the unit occasionally fails to turn on properly with my Logitech Harmony 890 remote. If that happens, I turn it on with its own remote, and then everything works fine. We are in an area that gets lots of power cycles (Central Florida), and I think that may have something to do with it.

Nice upgrade but be prepared to tape LEDs
|
Pros: HDCP works flawlessly with brand new DISH Hopper and old 42" rear projection Samsung TV.
Cons: YOU WILL NEED TO TAPE THE FRONT PANEL BLUE LEDS.
I had a 4-year old version of the same switcher that ended-up failing HDCP handshake between our new DISH Hopper and our old 42" rear projection Samsung TV. This new model works flawlessly. YOU WILL NEED TO TAPE THE FRONT PANEL BLUE LEDS. As noted by another reviewer, they have an extremely bright and narrow beam that ruins any kind of TV watching and light the opposite side wall. Shame that they cannot be turned off or dimmed.

Glaring mistake

Pros: Works as advertised. Auto switching avoids the need for a remote.
Cons: Ridiculous brightness of the blue LEDs. I have to block the led with tape to be able to watch TV.
I would have given it a 10 except for the stupid LED intensity.

Bright Light Shines Bright
|
After having ordered 2 other models of HDMI switchers that proved disappointing, I was pleased to have this one performed as marketed. I've had the box for 2 months now and loving every minute of it. There's some automatic switching going on (which is cool) and some manual channel changing. No measureable delay between channel switching and no reduction in picture quality and performance. Before ordering, I read the reviews about this device and thought I'd give it a try since Monoprice has a great return policy. And, true to form, the blue LED power light is bright but I've grown accustomed to it. I don't see this as a negative. Although another remote to keep up with, I have already recommended the 5X1 Enhanced HDMI® Switch w/ Built-In Equalizer to all my friends.

Pros: Simple Setup Perfect Performance Wireless remote included
I can't say I'm surprised that I bought yet another Monoprice product that is just perfect. This switch works great, right out of the (very snazzy, might I add) box. Right off the bat, I hooked up the cable box, PS3 and iMac and the thing just works. The automatic switching capabilities have worked flawlessly so far. I like how, not only will it switch when something is turned on, but it will also switch back (or to the next active device in the chain) when that device in use is turned off. Great product, great price, nothing more to say!

Switching works, needs some refinement.
|
Pros: * Works * Small * Front panel input
Cons: * Blinding blue LEDs * 3 ft. power cord * Same model no. as obsolete switch
This is my third Monoprice HDMI switch. The first was a 4X1 switch from about 3 years ago that was a gem. The second was a 5X1 switch, HDX-501E, that was a dog from the second month. I probably should have returned it. It was very balky at changing channels. A few weeks ago it refused to go to any channel, so I ordered this model.
I like the front panel input feature. I like the fact that it actually switches the first time it gets a command. I like the small size.
I don't like the 3 ft. power cord. Power cords should be 6 ft. I had to re-route and swap power cord power supplies so this one went to a close, switched outlet, and another unit, with a proper 6 ft. power cord, went to a more distant outlet. Lose 1 star. I don't like the blinding blue lights on the front panel. What are these people thinking when they make this stuff? This is for a home theater, where it is dark! I can't just cover them with black tape because I want to able to see if the proper channel is selected. I temporarily put 6 layers of masking tape over them, but I will need to cover with 1/4 inch Kapton tape eventually. Lose one star. I went to re-program my Logitech Harmony remote, and found out that the model number of this switch is almost the same as the old one new model number is HDX(C)-501E. Logitech doesn't have an entry for that, only the obsolete dog, my old HDX-501E. Now model numbers are cheap, and HDX-501E doesn't have any brand recognition, so why not use a completely different number? Anyway, I "learned" all the codes from the remote control and bypasses that problem, but Monoprice lost another star.
OBTW, I just noticed my review rating for the old 5X1 switch at the bottom of the page. It was a 9/10. I suppose I only took off one star for the blinding red LEDs on the front of that. Well that shows that out-of-box experience isn't always accurate. For most of its short life that switch did not work correctly, and it finally died after only 15 months of use. It also reminds me that Monoprice is either not reading the reviews or has no control over what it is buying, because everybody complains about the lights.

One word, Awesome!
|
Pros: How can you go wrong? It just works. in a all metal chassis (last time I checked everything was just all plastic) just pure high quality goodness.
Cons: The bad: well I wish it had a setting to disable auto switching. touch button is easy to press when unwanted. LEDs too... bright and I mean bright. I put electrical tape in front of LEDs to dim it, all thought I had to put very tiny holes in the tape so the LED lights will be visible.
the bad was not a deal breaker. if you want high quality and a great price point, this is the unit to get.

Not compatible with DishNetwork DVR
|
Pros: Small, metal enclosure, appears sturdily built.
Cons: Not compatible with DishNetwork DVR
HDX(C)-501E HDMI switcher is not compatible with DishNetwork VIP 612 DVR receiver. When VIP 612 is connected directly to AV receiver via HDMI, everything works fine. However, when connected through 501E switcher, there are two main problems:
1) The switcher does not pass surround sound through, and only two channel audio is available 2) Premium cable channels (such as Showtime) are not available because the switcher disrupts HDCP handshake in the chain.
My receiver (Panasonic SA-XR700) has two HDMI inputs so I'll have to keep DishNetwork connected to DVR input, and then use 501E switcher to accommodate all other devices on the BDP input.

HDMI switch with Blinding Blue LED Light
|
Pros: Great addition to my home theater on a budget. The switch does as advertise and "Smart Switching" addition makes the switch better than I realized.
Cons: I am fearful the extermely bright blue LED will burn a hole in my retina each time I walk into the light beam. I need to cover the beam with tape or something similar. I also wish the switch came with some under-mound support brackets to hold into place at the underside of the component shelf - I applied velcro to solve this problem.
Great product. Would recommend to anyone needing a HDMI switch (only keep in the mind the bright LED light).

robust product, with little annoyances.
|
Pros: - Simple design that works - Easy installation - Auto Switching Works *1 - Clear switching indicator *2 - Remote works quite well - touch switch promises to work for a long time
Cons: - Auto switching doesn't work for devices that go into standby rather than power off state *1 - The LEDs are damn bright! it shines through even after i stick black electrical tape over it! - its quite small, heavier gauge hdmi cables tend to displace the switch - ACDC adapter cable is way short.
It works. If you can get past the little annoyances, it will work quite well. have yet to test out the equalizer function since my devices are not that far away from the television.
I am pleasantly surprised on how well the cute little remote works. I have two IPTV set-top boxes that insist on going into standby rather than full off mode when i hit the power button. Which had me to switch to different devices via the remote manually. not a fault of the switch, though.

Pros: Automatic switching Nice Remote
Cons: Only 1.3b compatible, no 3D support unlike advertised!
by Monoprice Administrator Hello,
Thank you for your review. Keep in mind all devices need to support 3D for this to properly work with 3D, otherwise it will downgrade to a 2D signal. Thank you!
John Lingo Tech Support
by Anonymous I know that! Your device only supports 1.3b not 1.4 which is necc for 3D video. It even is stated in the manual of this product. My TV and DVD player are 3D compatible, I wanted to use the switcher to hook up other eqpmt. When I bypass the switcher and route the signal from the Sony DVD to the Samsung TV I can watch 3D. As soon as I connect the switcher the picture is 2D only! RL

The switcher works flawlessly and does exactly what it promises. The remote is not needed as it automatically switches to whatever source you turn on. The only thing that's bad is the crazy bright blue light that it comes with. Not to worry, I cover it with the remote I don't need. :)

Overall Very Good
|
Pros: Easy to use, compact, seems well made, reliabe so far, does the job.
Cons: As other reviewers have commented, only thing that could be better would be if you could turn down the LED brightness it is BRIGHT (but no big deal) probably worth a 9.5 if that was a choice in the drop down menu.
Overall, the device works very well - as advertised, and Monoprice delivered smoothly. Product is very good, and Monoprice is very good. Both Recommended!

Good product - with frikin laser beams
|
Pros: Works perfectly compatible with Harmony remote works with my new Sony Bravia TV
Cons: "Frikin laser beams" on the front panel where LED's should be - the LED's on the front literally cast blue circles on the opposite wall.
I had the Monoprice 4X1 HDMI switch on my old Sony TV (kfe42a10) and found that I had issues connecting the same peripherals to the new TV kdl46bx420. I bought this 5X1 to give it a try and it works perfectly with the new set. But I have to put a cover over the LED's because they are waaaay too bright. Ridiculously so. Not a big deal to cover up the lights on an otherwise perfect design.

Adequate features and GREAT pricing!
|
Pros: Easy to use right out of the box. 1 port is right in the front of the box for ease of access. compact design. touch sensing button instead of micro switch to change ports on front of switch. amplifies low signals from longer cables. supports 1080P and 1.3 for 3D. 5x1 ports, YAY and bravo!
Cons: Not a full sized remote. Credit card style remote. This is really a minor issue. AC power cable is a little short. This is also a very minor issue.
Nice and easy to use platform right out of the box. Port 1 is in the front for ease of access which is nice if you have something that you quickly want to connect and disconnect. The front L.E.D's are nice and bright so you can easily tell when you have switched ports. Some were complaining of the brightness. I don't find it terribly distracting as my HDTV 1080P Plasma is mounted high on the wall and somewhat to the left of my components. This brightness is probably attributed to the 4v required to illuminate a blue L.E.D. as opposed to the normal 2V so they tend to have a higher wattage output than another color would have normally. I catch it in my peripheral vision. Blue is more soothing than a red, wouldn't you agree? ) The unit amplifies low signals from my downstairs located 400 DVD units. My older universal remote did not have the preset option available for the remote control. This is minor as it is a learning remote and I was able to take another remote setting and reassign the keys to my liking. The touch sensing front panel switch is a neat feature as opposed to using a micro switch like I have on my other 2 hdmi switches now. It is a self searching 5 port unit which allows a single unit self switching option so you don't have to change it. I made some labels so I won't forget which ports are accessed by my components. I like that you can turn the power off to the unit if you are not using it. This is an upgrade to my existing switch that has a burned out port and bad power supply now. It was also self searching, but when the power supply went out of it that feature no longer worked. So this new unit is a nice upgrade to my home theater. I only needed the switch because there are not enough ports available on my home theater receiver. Seems to work fine with my PS3, up converting DVD changers, and my blu-ray player. Nice product and only had to pay $35 including shipping. Best Buy has something comparable for $200. Only had it 2 days. Let's hope for the best. I do not have any 3D components so I cannot comment on that feature. On a last note, the AC power cord is a little shorter than my last switch so I had to move the location of the switch from where I had my original one.

Pros: Simplicity front HDMI port price
Cons: Requires reboot of Asus Eee Pad Transformer
I purchased this switch to replace an older HDX-401E. In addition to greater device compatibility, I liked the fact that this model included a front HDMI port for ease of connecting portable devices.
As stated by other reviewers, the blue LEDs are blinding.
To set this up with a Logitech Harmony remote, it required learning all of the input buttons (one reviewer chose the HDX-401E as the model I chose the HDX-501E).
The reason I chose an 8 instead of 10 rating is due to the fact that it requires me to reboot my Asus Eee Pad Transformer with the HDMI cable connected in order for it to achieve a proper "handshake" (I have never had to do this with any other HDMI device, including my previous HDX-401E). As I stated earlier, the front port was a big selling point for me, but having to reboot my tablet was a bit of a letdown.

Pros: very easy setup, remote is easy to use
Cons: LED's are insanely bright. I ended up using transparent red tape to dim them.
I purchased a TV with only 2 HDMI inputs, and ended up with a Blu Ray, an Xbox, a streamer (redundant with the Xbox) and my cable box, and wanted a remote HDMI switch box. Thought I'd end up paying $60 or more on one that did what I wanted and found this one.
Works perfectly.

First thing I noticed was this thing came in a big box for such a little switch. Box has the switch, power supply (wall wart), and user manual. Unwrapped the switch, plugged in 2 of my HDMI devices (Roku XS and Xbox360) connected the OUT cable and powered up. Worked like magic. Remote works from across the room (about 18 feet), but I'll be programming up a Harmony remote... more on that once I get it done.
The only issue so far is the front panel LED brightness for power and in-use HDMI port. The LEDs are searchlight like in brightnessif you rack this in a closet, no problem, but if it's out in a stand, you'll want to mask the LEDs or use a marker to darken them considerably.
This looks to be yet another THUMBS UP for Monoprice in terms of quality, matching the description on the site exactly and useability! Gave it a 9 ONLY because of the LED Brightness

Meh. It mostly works.
|
Pros: Saves you from having to run multiple HDMI cables up the wall to your TV. Mostly works for that purpose.
Cons: The unit is supposed to be able to autodetect which device is turned on, and automatically switch to the correct input. Mine does not seem to do that at all, so you have to find and fiddle with the little remote every time you want to switch devices.
Also, as others have stated, the LEDs are BRIGHT... like, stupid bright. If you look directly into one of the blue LEDs it is quite literally blinding.
The input autodetection problem was a major drawback for me as I already have far too many remotes to keep track of. The LEDs are also really annoying.
All in all, not sure this product is such a great value... similar devices can be had at comparable prices at other major online retailers.
by Monoprice Administrator Hello Steve,
Thank you for your review. Just to clarify, this is noted on the product description.
"Whenever a device is turned off, the unit automatically switches to the next device in the chain, the same as if you had pressed the "next" button on the remote or pressed the "Touch switch" on the front panel."
Keep note it will not be able to automatically "switch" to a powered on device automatically if another device is feeding a signal to it. I hope this clears up the confusion. Thank you!

by Steve Blinch No confusion on my end, I know how it's supposed to work.
To clarify, if I turn off my WDTV Live box (input 3), it automatically switches to input 4 (which is nothing, as I only have 2 devices hooked up currently). So no devices are turned on at this point. Then, when I turn on my digital cable box (input 2) it stays on input 4 rather than switching to input 2. Thus my complaint.
The only way to switch it to the correct input is to use the remote, even if only one device is turned on.

Model HDX(C)-501E (PID 8463) - Works Great!
|
Pros: Well made product and straightforward functionality. A total of 5 HDMI input ports: 4 ports slots in rear and 1 in front - nicely designed. Red standby light turns to blue when powered on 5 other blue lights indicate which HDMI input port is active. Input ports automatically switch. Will work with Harmony One remote.
Cons: The red and blue lights for this HDMI switch aren't just bright, they are laser-like brilliant and become an instant problem to resolve if this switch box is facing you, such as on a TV stand shelf with the rest of your home theater equipment. You will want to cover these lights with 3+ inch strip of electrical tape or a similar remedy.
MonoPrice's HDX(C)-501E (PID 8463) 5x1 HDMI Switch Box is a fine solution when you need more HDMI ports. This unit features automatic port switching, which is nice, but it may become problematic if your "always on" cable box is connected to this switch box and you're relying on the automatic switching to activate the correct port for another device, such as a DVD player. If you use a remote control or manually select the input port, then it's not a problem. I'm using 3 of the input ports with MonoPrice 28AWG 6ft HDMI cables with no problems at all. This model will also work fine with the Harmony One remote, but it is not yet listed in the Harmony One device database. For Harmony One programming, I used MonoPrice's similarly structured model HDX-401E (4x1 switch) from the Harmony database, then added a new command to create an Input5 button, then did the "Learn IR" programming for EACH remote button - works perfectly. I would have rated this product a 10, except for the brilliant lights. I'm very pleased and impressed with this MonoPrice switch box - highly recommended.
