California Classic - Solid Body Electric Guitar - Red

You know it when you hear it. That distinctive California Classic sound made famous by artists like Dick Dale, David Gilmour, and Ritchie Blackmore. Whether it is the surf, blues, psychedelic rock, country, or classic hard rock, this California Classic Solid Body Electric Guitar from Monoprice is the perfect axe for your daily practice and performance needs.

This full-sized, 22-fret guitar features a double-cutaway body made of basswood, a bolt-on maple neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and chrome machine heads/tuning pegs. It uses three single-coil pickups in the bridge, middle, and neck positions. A five-position selector switch allows you to use each of the three pickups individually, while the 2 and 4 positions combine the neck and bridge pups with the middle one for that distinctive "quack" sound. A tremolo/whammy bar is included for note bending.

Before it gets shipped to you, each Monoprice guitar undergoes a setup, tuning, and inspection process by Master Luthier Roger Gresco here in Southern California. The setup ensures that the neck is straight, the action is right, and that it will stay in tune. Additionally, it comes with everything you need to get started, including strings (installed), the tremolo/whammy bar, a heavy-duty zippered black gig bag with shoulder strap, and a truss-rod wrench.

    MonoPrice has a winner
Beautiful guitar, plays as good as any strat I have ever picked up, very fast action with precision intonation all over the fretboard, stays in tune after playing hours of heavy hammering on the guitar.
Neck feels good as does all the hardware, sounds like a full priced strat after putting some DR 10's on the guitar.
Every part I have looked up from a strat MIM will fit on this guitar, Hmmmm?
If you are looking for a good playing guitar then you have found it right here on MonoPrice this is a outstanding piece of musical equipment and by the way the neck feels fantastic and has blazing fast action right out of the box without not even the slightest fret buzz (Thanks, Roger Gresco) who would have thought all this for under $90, for all you skeptics out there who feel you have to pay a small fortune for a great sounding quality built instrument you might better rethink this one and give it a shot you won't be sorry.
How are you doing this MonoPrice? Who are you getting to build these guitars? they a top notch.
By the way I bought this "California Classic" and the "Route 66" and both are equally as good in their own distinctive ways.
For those of you on the fence come on over you will not regret this purchase, if you can't tell I am mind boggled in how in the world MonoPrice can produce, sell and make a profit on such a nice guitar this is no el cheapo like you find on auction sites and pawn shops trust me I know.

PROS: Beautiful Guitar(Finish)not a bad spot nowhere on the guitar, Quality build, parts and sound.
These guitars have it all, I have some very expensive guitars and equipment and this guitar is no slouch or sacrifice to any of my other instruments.
    Beautiful craftsmanship.
Basswood sounds brillent with great tones and undertones.
    Maple Neck and Rosewood Fretboard.
    Triple pick-guard

CONS: Strings are not the best and I will replace the Nut with a Tusq®.
    Included pick sucks

"California Classic" vs my 60th Ann. Fender Stratocaster
If it spanks, sparkles and clips like a Stat, it's a Strat. This guitar sounds and plays like a Stratocaster. It is comparable with the $500 to $700 dollar Fender Strats. Reverse wound for noise canceling in two pickup positions!!! My Fender had a little stronger output which is typical of a modern guitar. The Monoprice axe sounds like 60's vintage pickups. This is guitar that you wouldn't feel ashamed to play on stage. It's also got a great story. I mean $87.67 delivered? It makes you wonder exactly why we've been paying $500 plus for guitars.

PROS: Pick-ups, electronics, guitar body, finish, tremolo. action is low and set up well done. craftsmanship. Value!!!

CONS: I had problems with tuning pegs and thought I was going to have to replace them. I tightened them instead, now they seem to hold. The tremolo is a standard vintage modern. Like the Fender unit the trem arm rides high and gets in my way. It's also a little stiff . If you're used to this and it doesn't bother you then it's really not a con. I'm replacing mine with a 2 post, adjustable trem arm height model. A

    What a guitar
I was skeptical when I ordered this guitar. I thought how good can it be for $70. Well it can be pretty darn good. I am amazed at how well this guitar plays and how much fun it is to play. I don't know how they can sell this guitar for such a low price, it really plays like a much more expensive brand name guitar. Amazing!

PROS: Fantastic guitar for the price

    CONS: None

    Impressive
Others have stated, how can they do this for $90? I agree with the sentiment, hard to imagine this quality for under $100. I honestly could imagine this guitar at $250 or more. The pickups sound decent if a bit thin but you can find a cheap used Lce Sensor or similar for $30-40. Strings need replacing immediately and have a decent pick before you play, the pick it comes with is a throw-away (it grabs the string and is not playable).

    You can't go wrong here.

PROS: Solid construction, good tone, better than average playability

CONS: Noisy pickups, a little thin, stock strings are cheap

    Amazing value.
I bought the red California Classic on sale for $69.99. It arrived well set up for a player who likes a floating bridge and very low action, but that ain't me, so I performed a full setup and fixed a few minor issues.

I am VERY happy with this instrument. For seventy bucks and about an hour of work, I got a great-sounding guitar.

PROS: Sounds like a vintage strat.
Frets were level, with no protruding ends.

CONS: Nothing that couldn't be fixed easily.

    Exceptional value
I asked for this guitar for my Christmas gift from my daughter...beats getting a sweater....when it arrived i asked her to keep it in a temperate spot until Xmas. when i received it i was amazed at the quality and professional shape of a knockoff Strat. I rigged up an amp and tried it out...it played fine....everything on it worked and it needed no adjustments....even the strings on it are not too bad....i compared it to a Fender Tex Mex SRV and they look the same...i didnt bother putting on the whammy...im not Hendrix.....i bought a good case and other accessories including an effects pedal and this guitar sounds awesome with it...now i admit im a lead singer when it comes to experience and not a good guitarist...but ive been around them for 40 yrs and know junk from quality and this axe for the money is boss, a guitar player friend played it and said it was unbelievable for the money. Had a band recently with 2 guys who played LPs and i said too bad we didnt have a Strat to use on some tunes for different tone...i wouldnt hesitate to use this axe for that purpose at all...it definitely produces the sound with the single coils and 5 way switch. My only beef is the monotone banner on the headstock...too tacky...they should use another logo....if i sand that off...nobody could tell it and a Strat apart. So definitely buy one of these you cant go wrong for the money and if youre a purist you might take some convincing but i think China is putting put some good quality products on this site for short money cause ive bought other stuff and its all great stuff.....

PROS: Good price, sounds great, well made, looks great

CONS: Knobs could be better quality, tuners tighter

Like Strats? You can't go wrong with this guitar.
Bought this for my home recording studio and am very happy with the result.

It arrived better packed than any guitar I've ever seen shipped...Heavy cardboard, foam, more cardboard, and a padded space-blanket! (wow)

Came set up pretty well, and after a couple tweaks, it's a great guitar.

I tightened up the tuner knobs a bit with a Philips screwdriver, this helped in tuning, and staying in tune.

My guitar aficionado friend compared it favourably to his $1500 Strat!

If you have the small amount of money this costs, you should buy it now. -)

PROS: Very nice build quality and finish

Hardware and volume and tone pots better than expected

Plays quite well right out of the box

    Sounds exactly like it should

    Came packed impressively well

    Free gig-bag

CONS: The strings that come on it are 9 gauge, and only "OK"

The edges of the frets are a LITTLE sharp, won't cut or crape you, but could use polished for a better feel

The protective plastic was a bit tough to remove

Gig-bag is a bit cheap....but it was free, so....

    My third purchase
If you been holding off on buying a guitar, don't look no more, cause these are top of the line for the money. You can buy a Squire, AS, Xaviere or other low end guitar, and it won't be as sweet as these already set-up for you so you can start playing now.

PROS: This guitar is every bit as perfect as the other two I bought. Beautiful white finish and is set up better than my high dollar guitars. I am sold on monoprice guitars and intend on getting more of them for my grandkids.

CONS: None in my book. I'd like to see monoprice come out with hardshell cases for these guitars. I like my guitars in a nice case and sometimes the case will cost as much as the guitar or more. All 52 of guitars I have are in hard cases even these monoprice babies.

    Solid Strat
I have a CBS era telecaster that I completely gutted, pickups, pots, bridge, tuners, and neck. The tele sounds great now that it is no longer original equipment. I bought this strat knock-off thinking that I would replace everything as well. But, it is quite good as is. It is not as loud as my tele, but that may just be because the pickup height needs adjusting. Also, pots are not as varied in tone as I would like - so I will probably replace them.

PROS: Well made. Put together right. Components are much better than the CBS era Fender components. I am very satisfied. Candy apple red - It looks great. Action is on the high side, but that is how I like it. I am sure it depends on which tech sets up the instrument.

CONS: Might need to cut a new nut - I get a bit of fret buzz on the middle strings. Also, considering replacing the pots to get more variation in tone. I like mud on the bottom (overdrive the tube amp) and bright popping single coil in the open position.

    Hard to believe...
...this guitar was only $71.00. Looks great plays great!

    PROS: Looks

    Bang for the buck

    Easy fingering

CONS: There is some clear plastic on the pick guard that is a PITA to remove, especially under the strings and around the pickups and tone controls. A minor quibble.
