They sound great! ...When they work

Pros: Great sound and great price. Fairly convincing appearance when disguised with plants.

Cons: Did not last more than a few months, started producing very poor quality sound.

I'll start off by saying that I am a firm believer in Monoprice products and have had nothing but great experiences with their products and service. However, this time was an exception. I purchased these a while ago and installed them around an outdoor biergarten patio at a German restaurant for background. They were tied to the main house system with a separate amp, complete with limiter to prevent overpowering them. While they look incredibly cheesy and are too smooth to look like real rocks, some creative installing and nestling them within plants and shrubs, they blend in rather well. The 8" drivers reproduced the German polka music very well and they sounded fantastic with a rich, full sound! ...Well for around a month or two they did. I came back to find that they sounded pretty trashy and rattled at any reasonable volume. The limiter was set to only deliver quiet background music outside to these speakers, so I was confused and upset at how they now sounded like they were blown. I thought maybe someone had fiddled with the limiter settings and blasted them out, but it was still set how I had left it. I ended up removing them and patched in a ugly pair of outdoor bookshelf speakers I had on hand and stuck those into the gardens until I could find something to replace the Monoprice pair.

Out of curiosity, I just recently pulled out the broken rock speakers from the junk pile and dismantled them to see what had gone wrong. It turns out that we hadn't been at fault at all, and they speaker components themselves were actually defective.

The awful "blown" sound we had been hearing was actually the result of severely cracked surrounds on both drivers that would rub and rattle with any bass notes. The baskets were also very rusty, which means that there was quite a bit of water leaking in through the cracks and seals as well. I do still have the speakers and shells in the parts pile, but they're pretty useless at this point.

I'm pretty disappointed as I usually expect better from Monoprice. The price is great, and the sound is (was) great, but unfortunately the pair I received did not last very long at all.

After reading some of the other more recent reviews, it seems others had similar issues, there may have been a bad batch that got sent out. I would hope they have caught the issue at the factory by now.

    Pros: Amazing sound value.

Cons: Really thin wire that's a pain to change.

I am pretty serious about my audio and own some high end gear from Martin Logan, B&K and others. I bought these to use in the yard at my cottage. With all my speakers I break them in before passing judgment. For these speakers, the break in is critical. Out of the box they were really hollow sounding and I was worried that these were junk. After a couple of days breaking them in inside the house turned up loud I was amazed at the difference. The hollow sound was gone, the bass loosened up and they sounded great, nice dispersion too. If you buy these, do yourself a favor and hook them up inside the house for at least a few days, turn them up loud every time you're away and be prepared to enjoy some sweet sounds after you take them outside.

    Pros: Look nice

Speakers do not sound good, almost like the speaker is blown...not worth trying to ship them back or risk buying a new pair.

    Hi Kenneth,

Thank you for your review and truly sorry to hear about your experience with PID 6966. Did it work properly for you initially? May I ask what is the make and model of the receiver in use? For troubleshooting purposes, have you tried connecting to a different receiver? Please let me know. Thank you for your cooperation in the matter.

Pros: Solid bass, crystal clear highs, solid mid-range. Plenty loud, even outside, set nuanced. Great buy

    Cons: None.

Both my brother and sister have in ground pools. I got them each a pair of these so that they could have music while in the pool and entertaining. If these are driven by a decent receiver, amazed is what you will be, my friend. I played all sorts of variety of music on these to test them out at my sister's place and she couldn't believe it I couldn't believe it, either. You do not expect such bass and clarity and volume from two speakers, but these really, really rock. And they blend into the background. She couldn't be happier.
