dropped one star for the hour I wasted figuring it out and looking for a manual!
This would have been a 5 star if there was a link to a manual here as described in the 1x3" paper I received with the speaker. I had to figure out the functions, and am still fuzzy on what one of the buttons does or can do, and the LED colors. I think it isn't as loud as I had hoped but the bass is pretty remarkable from such a tiny speaker. I heard bass notes that are more clear than on 6" decent brand car speakers. Nicely done.

    PROS: volume, sound, materials

    CONS: lack of manual

    Sounds nice...NO Manual
This really is a nice unit. I wish Monoprice would get on the stick and put up an on-line manual.
It's what everyone is asking for in the reviews.

    PROS: Sounds pretty good

    CONS: No Manual

    Frustrating
It wouldn't take someone but a 20 minutes to document how to use this and yet, there's no manual of any kind. And when attempting to chat with Monoprice about how to use, I get short, incomplete answers. I've wasted quite a bit of time trying to find documentation and/or figure out the sync button (I've at least learned that's what it's called) and am guessing at the functionality of the left/right buttons. This is really inexcusable. I don't care how pretty the documentation is, but do at least document the thing.

PROS: Sounds good. Impressive even for the money. Sync'd with my phone upon turning it on.

    CONS: No manual.

Seriously? This much sound from such a tiny speaker?
I received this unit free of charge in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When asked if I was interested in reviewing the Vegas Bluetooth portable speaker, I wasn't expecting the surprise that I received. It came in the typical no frills, but well packaged white box from Monoprice. Upon opening it and removing the speaker from the box, I noticed there were no instructions. Now maybe mine was forgotten because it was a review unit. Logging on to their website, I also didn't see a downloadable manual. Oh well, I mean it's a Bluetooth device, so I should be able to figure it out.

Flipping the power switch to on, I was greeted with a red light on top of it and my Note 3 couldn't find the device. Ok so, deduction dear Watson, red usually means bad or dead. So I turned the unit off and plugged into my Select Series Power Bank ( pid 13083 ) on the 2.0 a side and let it charge. I recorded a 3.25hr recharge time. The unit will alternately change the led from blue to a purplish color while charging if the unit is on. It flashes red if off. Once done, it is solid blue while on or nothing when in the off stage. One interesting note on that , you can actually continue to use the device while it's charging. It's nice that you are able to so and not be without tunes while it charges up. Using my power bank I actually charged both my phone and this unit all the while enjoying music during the process of recharging.

Ok fine you say, but how does it sound? That is what you're really after right? Well the sound surprised the heck out of me. For it's size, it was rich and full. 3 Watts isn't much these days. But with the way the unit is designed and the 40mm drivers being 4 ohm, that makes a big difference in sound. The "rear" firing passive radiator, really does help the base response. High quality FLAK or MP3 files sound great. Low quality MP3 or WAV files can start the beginnings of distortion at maximum volume.

But what about the distance on the signal? I need leave my phone/Bluetooth unit right beside it, right? Nope. I measured 30' from either side. One was test was through glass. I left my phone on charger in my office and took the speaker out by the pool and through the glass at up to 30' it stayed connected, provided it had clear line of sight. Repeated this on the other side, while outside with my phone and same results. Clear line of sight I saw 30' of range. Tried it again from the rear of the unit and I recorded 35' of range, when unobstructed. Now your mileage might vary, but across my pool and facing the front, I was able to document 50' of distance before the signal started to drop. That's impressive.

I tested phone call operation on the unit and found the person on the other end to have a deeper voice then normal ( unless my mother in law was sick that day lol) but they were still clear and very recognizable. Comments on the other end were that I sounded normal and that the quality was clear. It's a neat feature to have built in for handling phone calls. For the price I think this unit is a good value and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. The only thing missing? The ability to daisy chain a couple of these together to place around your patio / pool area for when you're entertaining. They are sturdy and can withstand a drop from a table height so to use them for outdoor activities is a no brainer.

I did dock it one star for the lack of manual, either in the box or available here on the website. I'm sure this will be corrected and if so, then it gets 10 stars!

Thanks for taking the time to read this review, hope it helped in your purchasing decision.

PROS: Great sound, good Bluetooth signal distance, input jack for non BT devices

CONS: Unit wasn't charged, Sound will border on distortion at max volume depending on recording quality

    Unbeatable for the price!
I work in a large warehouse, and after several months of everyone getting sick of the radio, people started bringing in bluetooth speakers so that we could choose what we listened to. I was about the fifth person to pick one up and bring it in, and I spent less than half of what everyone else did on mine. Everyone agrees, the monoprice one sounds better, is better constructed, and is just all around the best value. A couple of the guys I work with even said they were just going to stop using theirs and go get their own new one from monoprice, because it's just that much better.

While it is slightly larger than most other speakers that are out there, not counting significantly smaller units which don't have nearly the battery life, or the sound, the weight is on par with other similar products, so if you're carrying it around either in your bag or in a pocket, it's really not that bad. That weight helps make the construction feel really solid though.

Really though, the best part about this speaker is the sound. It's loud. It's clean. It's throaty. It's hard to believe it's coming out of such a small box, and at such a tiny price tag. Sure, it's not going to sound as good as a pair of $500 studio monitors, but you can't throw those in your pocket and listen to them on the go for 30 bucks.

If I had to find one fault with the speaker, it would be the batter life. Granted, I play it at full volume, so obviously that's going to draw more juice than moderate levels would, but I get any where between 3-4 hours of playtime off a full charge before it turns off. Thankfully, I always have batter pack with me, so I can easily get through a full 8 hour day with it, but I would have loved to have seen the actual stated times on the page. Oh well, I fully expected 3-4 hours as that's what other speakers get off a similar capacity battery, so I knew what I was in for.

    PROS: The sound
    The size
    The build quality
    The style
    The price

    CONS: Average batter life

    Bang for your Buck!
    “Monoprice provided this review sample”

Great bang for your buck! That is about the best way to sum up this Monoprice Bluetooth portable speaker. If you try to compare this to other $200+ Bluetooth speakers, you will probably be disappointed. But if you take it for what it is, you will be pleasantly surprised. For only $49 you get a very small and portable Bluetooth speaker that not only can fill a decent size room with sound, but sound good doing it! It has a nice mix of bass and treble although depending on you position in relation to the speakers this can vary. The bass shoots out the back through a sound radiator and is best placed near a wall for full effect. For only being 3w speakers, you will be amazed how much sound they produce. The unit is covered with a nice rubber coating and feels very solid. Not cheap feeling in the slightest bit. There are track forward and back buttons, a volume button, and a pause/play button. A on/off switch is located on the right side as well as a AUX input for wired devices. It charges via a micro USB cable that you can plug into your computer or do what I did and use a phone charger. The supplied USB cable is awfully short at about only a foot in length. There is a LED indicator on top that when charging flashes red and when powered on is blue. My review sample came with no manual although you shouldn't really need one, it's pretty straight forward to operate. I didn't have any connection issues with my android phone. All in all for the price it's great and a well made product. Perfect for office use or a relaxing session by the pool. Probably not best suited for larger rooms or in a environment with a lot of background noise. My only complaints are the short cable provided and no wall adapter. I would have also really liked bass and treble control. Highly recommend for someone looking for something portable to listen to your music on, without braking your bank.

Compact Speaker that Looks and Sounds Great
This was just the type of speaker I was looking for, larger than the small puck designs but at a price that doesn't break the bank.. The build quality is nice, it feels hefty and well put together and the battery is long lived. I like the speaker grill design, too, it looks kind of mid century modern.

Doesn't come with a user manual and monoprice doesn't have one on their site for download, so good luck figuring out the different things the middle button does.

    PROS: price
    sound
    design
    battery life
    build quality

    CONS: No user manual

    Great for the price
Excellent little speaker! Wanted something to play tunes but didn't want to shell out $$$$ for it. This fits my needs perfectly!

PROS: Small, lightweight, easy to use.

CONS: Not sure on battery yet, but that has been a con for other portable speakers, so time will tell.

    Portable Melody Bluetooth Speaker
If you are looking for a simple, high quality Bluetooth speaker to play music off of your phone. this is it. For the size of this thing, the bass response is extremely impressive. Mids sound surprisingly warm and highs remain nearly distortion-free, even at max volumes. Aesthetically, the speaker is pretty cool looking in my opinion. It’s unique, but can easily fit into any environment without standing out. Pairing the speaker to a phone is really easy, done by pressing the center button on the speaker and running a scan on your phone or other Bluetooth enabled device. The speaker gets adequately loud, though don’t expect to have a house party with it. For the size, max volume is right where it should be while still holding a very clean sound with good low end response. Sound fills my dorm room perfectly and I have never had the music cut out, no matter where my phone is in the room. I am yet to charge the speaker after several hours of listening, so battery life seems to be pretty good. The added 3.5mm input adds versatility to the device, allowing you to connect non-Bluetooth connected devices to it as well. Overall, this speaker exceeded all expectations I had of it upon removing it from the box. I was a bit disappointed to find a lack of instructions, but anyone who has ever used a Bluetooth device will have this up and running in seconds. Monoprice provided me this product in exchange for a review, but my opinions are 100% honest and reflective of the product.

PROS: Excellent sound reproduction, very warm bass for the size, easy pairing, good range, aux input, good battery life

CONS: Lack of instructions, though the device was pretty straig.ht forward to set up

    Exactly What I Wanted
My family loves music, and we just returned from a camping trip where music was provided via the speakers on my wife's mobile phone. Needless to say, this was less than ideal. When we returned, I sought out a portable Bluetooth speaker that wouldn't break the bank, was convenient, and would provide acceptable quality of sound. I've had great luck with my Monoprice purchases, so I investigated the several available options and settled on the Portable Melody Bluetooth.

The speaker arrived today, and I had it set up (using the provided Quick User Guide) in less than five minutes - I'm listening to it now, in fact. The sound quality is very good considering the compact size. I pushed the volume to the upper limits and experienced some distortion, but this was not unexpected.

The unit is heavier than I expected which is a good thing. I was a bit concerned that it might feel cheap and light however, it comes across as substantial.

I look forward to taking it out on my deck while I grill or to the workout room to play music for meditation or out on the next camping trip. I'm very pleased.

    PROS: Compact
    Substantial
High Quality Audio (as compared to equivalent products)
    Excellent Value

CONS: So as to be consistent with many of the other reviews, I will restate that there is no manual. I searched the site including the Downloads section and was unable to locate one. I hope Monoprice will rectify this soon.
