Premium 3D Printer Filament 1.75MM 0.5kg/spool, Color Changing Thermochromic Gray

Create temperature sensitive objects on your 3D printer using this 1.75mm Color Changing PLA Filament from Monoprice!

PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn. The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot.

This filament is thermochromic (temperature sensitive). Under normal conditions it is a gray color, but when exposed to heat it quickly changes to a neutral/whitish color. When exposed to freezing temperatures it changes to a dark gray. It comes on a 0.5kg spool and prints at temperatures between 190 ~ 220°C.

    Reel Dimensions:

    • Hub Width: 37mm (1.46")

Pros: High & beautiful print quality. Extrudes well. Great layer adhesion.

Cons: This filament will get a lot of use, so 1kg spool would be awesome!

I found that the Premium 3D printer Filament 1.75mm 0.5kg/spool Color Changing Thermochromatic Blue to have all-around superb printing qualities. The added coolness (no pun intended) of the thermochromatic properties is a welcomed bonus.

Monoprice sent me this product to evaluate. I tested this filament on a homemade Prusa i3 printer with .4 mm E3Dv6 nozzle. Monoprice suggest printing at temperature at 190-220c. I split the difference and printed at 205 (210 for first layer) and print bed at 55c with a thin layer of hairspray. Those temperatures yielded a really nice filament flow from 30mm to 60mm/minute with virtually no drooling from the nozzle even when parked for a few minutes.

I printed a perimeter around my first print. I was a little concerned because the flow during the perimeter was spotty. I was tempted to kill the print before it started on the actual object. By the time the object started printing, the filament flow was smooth and consistent. The first layer was immaculate! It had great adhesion to the print bed. Every other layer stuck to each other like a charm. All around great layer adhesion.

I typically “tag” my custom prints with my name and/or some other text. Even with some other brand of filaments that I love, I usually have to take the hobby knife to clean the small text. With the filament, even the small font was sharp, easily readable and did not require cleaning.

The thermochromatic properties were pretty fascinating too. Body heat from simply touching the filament began the color change process. The color change is graded and around 120f the filament is near white. After about 30 seconds, I could notice the filament returning to its original blue color. After applying ice as an experiment, the filament totally returned to its starting color. I originally thought the color changing properties was gimmicky, but after seeing it work, the creative wheels started flowing.

In summary, I have been through several rolls and brands of filament. The print quality (layer adhesion, bridging, print speeds, etc.) from this filament is among the best I have seen. The thermochromatic properties is icing on the cake. It’s worth noting that the filament doesn’t feel smooth like most PLA—it feels more textured. At 205c print temperature is higher than the typical 180-190 that I use for PLA.

Here are the spool measurements I recorded:
    Spool width: 41.5mm
    Hub diameter: 53 mm
    Hub width: 35.25
Filament dimensions very consistent throughout the spool at 1.73 to 1.74mm.
